William texted back with a grin on his face, “I knew that I could not hide anything from my marvelous grandma! How could you be so brilliant and observant?”
“Pfft! Stop buttering me up and just cut to the chase,” Deborah replied impatiently.
“Well, I just want to talk about my mother. I would like to know what kind of person she was.”
“Your mother.” Deborah’s heart was full of sorrow when mentioning her deceased daughter, “Your mother was a gentle and kind woman. She was beautiful, well-mannered, and treated everyone indifferently even with servants. I have never seen anyone who had a bad impression on her.”
Children were always the best in the eyes of the parents. Deborah only had praises when mentioning her daughter.
“It’s a pity that the good always dies young. If it weren’t for Hayden, such a simple and innocent girl like your mother would not have run away with him. That b*stard had taken away my daughter and eventually made you lost your mother at such a young age. Your grandpa and I were in deep grief and I would not hesitate to have a piece of him for the sake of my daughter!”
Deborah began to curse at Hayden when she was heartbroken by the loss of her daughter. William did not fire back and just listened to her scolding patiently. He finally spoke again after she was done venting her anger, “Grandma, please calm down. My mother is long gone but I’m still here with you. I promise to take good care of you.”
Deborah sighed and said, “I know you will but you have lost your memory now and I am very worried about you. How is your father treating you?”
“It’s alright. My father has also been grieving since my mother passed away.”
“He deserves it! How could he be as heartbroken as your grandfather and I?” Deborah swiftly interrupted William.
He did not want to bring up his father as Deborah would be pissed again. He then said, “Grandma, do tell me about my mother. I want to know everything about her.”
“I can go on all day about your mother,” Deborah sighed as she knew that William must be looking for something by asking about his mother out of the blue.
Deborah decided to cut the act and went straight to the chase, “William, you must have other plans besides merely asking about your mother, right? I’m your grandmother and would not hurt you. Do tell me what exactly you want to know instead of beating around the bush. This will then make it easier for us and you could get whatever that you want to know.”
William was feeling ashamed as he was mistaken about his grandmother’s intentions.
He then decided to be upfront since Deborah had initiated the first move.
“Grandma, I have a few questions to ask you. Did my mother had any good friends abroad? The kind of friends that are considered as besties?”
“Hmm… let me think about it,” Deborah thought for a moment before she continued.
“Your mom had been well protected by your grandpa and me. She had several friends that are the daughters of rich and influential families. She had a close friend named Emily Poland. Emily was sent by a government official from abroad to study here at the same school as your mom. Your mom would take her to our house and she was a beautiful and lovely lady. Your uncle often took them to hang out, but I have no idea about her whereabouts after she has graduated.”
“Emily?” William repeated the name softly and asked, “Grandma, did my mom had any other friends apart from the daughters of upper-class families and Emily?”
“Nope. She was then taken away by your father long before she matured into a gorgeous woman!”
“Well then, was there anyone in New York that was not a fan of her?”
“Nope. Your mother was greatly loved by others, and there was no one who hated her!” Deborah answered with certainty.
How could one have no enemies when there is no perfect human being in this world? William thought to himself as he was not convinced by his grandmother. However, there was nothing he could do and he tried his luck again, “Had my mom ever been in a relationship before my father?”
“Nope. How could she be easily persuaded by your father if she had a boyfriend before?”
“Was there anyone who was interested in her?”
“What? She had lots of them as flowers would be sent every day to our house. She was a popular girl back then but had no interest in the boys that were pursuing her. Your grandfather and I have always wanted to find a good match for her. We also considered finding a man who is capable if the first option was not available. Little did we know that a widower like Hayden would have stolen her heart away!”
Deborah couldn’t hold back her hatred when she mentioned Hayden as she continued to cussed him out, “Hayden must be a cursed man as he had indirectly killed his first wife and now your mother!”
William brushed his forehead and thought to himself, Will I still be able to get something useful when grandma is acting out again?
He did not obtain anything fruitful after the call apart from a lady named Emily.
He wanted to know from Deborah regarding both the person who cherished Matilda the most as well as the person who hated her the most.
Based on his observation, there were generally two kinds of people who had the intention of harming others. The first one would be the so-called bestie, and the other would be one who was not a fan of the other since the very beginning.
Deborah claimed that Matilda had no enemies and it was somewhat exaggerated. However, Matilda was the only daughter of the Floyd Family and the apple of the eyes of Fandrey and Deborah. They would have been aware of it should Matilda have encountered someone who was against her.
Deborah stated that Matilda’s friends are of upper-class families and she was not close with them. This friendship would not have led to revenge-seeking plans and hence, the only suspect was Matilda’s best friend, for now.
Besides, Matilda was shortly taken back to live here with Hayden. The possibility of her social-circle friends plotting against her is low as she would have no business with them.
The only suspect was Emily as she had a good relationship with Matilda and turned out to live here as well.
Was Emily the one who got rid of Matilda? He then decided that it was better to arrange for someone to run a background check on her as William finally had a lead.
He decided to make the arrangements tomorrow as it was now too late and turned off the lights and went back to his bedroom. He gently took off his shoes and went to bed. Valeria was sleeping soundly and he gave her a kiss on her face. He finally closed his eyes and soon drifted into dreamland.
