Emma’s POV
Well, I trust Eion,” Snow replied to my question as she checked the time with her wristwatch. Sighing, she stood up and grabbed her bag. “I gotta go now.”
I just rolled my eyes at her, “Yeah yeah, go to your strawberry addict robot now and leave your bitter and lonely friends.”
She just chuckled at me and bid her goodbyes, with Hannah encouraging her also. “Go get your man, Snow.” She winked and left the ice cream shop.
With Snow leaving, Hannah and I were left alone now. I turned to her, “What should we do now? Our friend just left and I’m bored.” I complained to her.
It looks like Hannah was not hearing a word I am saying as the corners of her lips were turning up to form a smile.
Oh no. I know what she’s doing. I sighed. Just then, her phone rang and she eagerly pressed answer.
“Oh hey, babe. What’s up?”
Oh right, it’s Leroy calling her right now.
I just gave her a look and she shrugged at me.
She paused for a minute as Leroy told her something on the phone “Uhuh…really?” Glancing at me, she continued listening to him. “Now? I’m with Emma, and Snow just left earlier.”
“What is it now, Hannah?” I asked, “Don’t tell me he wants you to leave me now? What about me? C’mon.” Reaching out my hand, I motioned on her phone. “Give me your phone, I’ll tell him to call next time as this is a girl’s day.”
“Don’t be so bitter, Emma.” I heard Leroy’s voice saying from the other line. “I want to see my girl now. You can have your own lovey-dovey with Dax soon.” He continued.
I glared at the phone. Way to go Leroy.
Hannah mouthed a sorry to me before saying to Leroy, “Okay, I’ll be right there. See you. Mwah.”
She said, now standing up and fixing her things in her purse. “Sorry, we’ll hang out next time, Emma. I promise.”
“Yeah yeah. Good luck seeing your boy. Tell him I said screw him.” I said to Hannah sarcastically. She just chuckled at me, saying I should call Dax but I shooed her away.
I want to be alone now.
Just then, I felt my eyes suddenly engulfed in darkness. I felt soft hands covering my eyes, and I heard the person from beside me giggling.
“Uhm…who is this? I don’t have time for this, whoever you are.” I said irritatedly. People really are testing me these days. And I felt really angry at almost everyone.
Not that it’s unusual. I’m just stressed out that while my friends are there with their boyfriends, here I am, sulking alone. Why does Dax even not bother to call me?
Leroy is also a med student but he has time for Hannah. But Dax? Tsk.
I won’t call him. He should be the one to call me first. I won’t give in. I have the pride to maintain.
“Try to guess first and I’ll loosen my grip.” Said the voice, still covering my eyesight.
I sighed and said the name that came out of my mind, “Uhm, Leroy?”
The person huffed before losing his grip on me. I blinked at the sudden brightness and turned to look at the person.
It was Luke, standing behind me and raising his eyebrows, “Duh, it’s Luke.” He then sat at the chair beside me, where Hannah was just sitting a few minutes ago. “Am I that forgettable, Emma?”
“Oh, hey, Luke.” I greeted.
“Well, you stopped hanging out with the squad after you know…that happened. I just forgot your existence for a bit.” I said honestly.
He gripped his chest acting like he’s hurt. “Ouch. I just became busy. So what are you doing here alone? How is everyone?” He said.
I shrugged at him, “I’m just waiting and passing by time. What about you? What brings you here Luke?”
“Oh, I’m with my girlfriend, Ember.” He answered, waving at Ember’s figure from afar as she ordered some ice cream on the counter.
I smiled at Ember and she smiled back. “Oh cool.”
With that, I can’t believe that the person I least expected the most was accompanying me now.
When Ember came to our table, Luke then stood up, putting his arms around her shoulders, and said, “Then we got to go. It was nice talking to you, Emma.”
I nodded, “Yeah, nice talking to you too Luke. Come back to the squad and bring Ember with you. I’m sure we’ll welcome you back.” I said, inviting him. “Though the squad is not active these days. Everyone’s busy with college.”
Luke just nodded, chuckling at that, “Yeah, I figured.”
Waving goodbye to me, I watched as they left the shop and I sighed, now left alone again.
What am I even doing alone here, pitying myself? I’m just wasting my time.
Just then, I felt strong hands covering my eyes again. I caught a whiff of his masculine perfume.
Oh…look what we have here. It won’t be bad if I tease him a bit right?
Smirking, I spoke up. “What is it now again, Luke?” I rolled my eyes underneath the darkness.
The person now loosened his grip on me and made me turn around.
Adjusting to the sudden brightness again, I watched as Dax, my boyfriend’s expression on his face, was looking at me unbelievably.
“Seriously, Emma? You just called me Luke? You just mistook your own boyfriend as someone? I can’t believe you.”
He looked so hurt and offended and almost betrayed. He scoffed at me. “Where’s my hug?”
I lightly hit him but couldn’t help myself from embracing him into a hug, “I knew it was you. And I’m mad at you. You didn’t call my phone anymore.”
He planted a small kiss on my forehead before saying, “I’m just not used to this long-distance thing, babe. I’m sorry.”
I took this as a chance to look at his face again. Brown hair, and brown eyes almost like the earth crashing against the sea.
He had a little stubble on his chin that made him now mature. His thick eyebrows and long eyelashes were evident. He was wearing a coat, and he had a backpack that said he just came from his college and went straight to me. He looked a bit tired, but the smile on his lips lit up his face and caught me checking him out.
“What are you staring at? Did you just realize that your boyfriend is so handsome?” He asked, now grinning at me. “Is this a sign that I’m forgiven now?”
I shook my head. “You should have slept first before you came here. You look dead.”
He pouted at me, “I just missed you, babe. I wanted to see you sooner.”
I just chuckled at him, “Whatever. I’ll let you sleep for today first before I demand a date, okay?”
“Then we’ll sleep first?” He asked.
I raised my eyebrows at him, “What do you mean we? I meant you. Only you should sleep.”
“Oh c’mon, please? I need my recharge, Emma.” He said, kissing me on the cheek. “You know what I’m referring Emma…please?”
“Fine.” And with that, he quickly grabbed me and went to his car, helping me to get in and he eagerly kissed me on the lips.
Oh gosh. I should have known he’ll appear today. Well, whatever. As long as he’s happy.
