“He took quite a few photos of me,” Robin Bailey said, holding up the mini camera.
This revelation caused Gina Backer’s face to turn pale, as she had been caught in the act.
Being forced to do something by Robin Bailey in public didn’t worry her much, as there wasn’t much she could do. But being caught with the camera, that was a problem.
“I think about it, using this mini camera to invade someone’s privacy isn’t a good idea. If I were to take this to the police station, you’d probably spend about ten days to half a month in there. Maybe that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I doubt your workplace would wait that long for you,” Robin Bailey explained.
With each word from Robin Bailey, Gina Backer’s face grew even paler. He had hit a nerve, as he was right. If she got caught, her workplace wouldn’t wait around for her.
Direct dismissal.
“Please, don’t report me,” Gina Backer pleaded.
“Then follow me,” Robin Bailey turned and walked towards a closed office, no one in sight.
Gina Backer hesitated before following him inside. She had seen enough movies to know what went on in places like this, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go in.
It was very likely that things were going to happen in there.
But in the end, Gina Backer clenched her jaw and stepped inside.
“I could write an IOU, pay you back, anything you want… but I can’t do that,” Gina Backer hesitated.
“What do you mean by ‘that’?” Robin Bailey asked with a furrowed brow.
“You know, those kinds of things,” Gina Backer said.
“What exactly are those things?” Robin Bailey raised an eyebrow.
“Oh…” Gina Backer couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Robin Bailey pressed on, “Whatever it is, tell me who sent you. The Five Great Families, or someone else?”
“It’s… neither,” Gina Backer shook her head.
“Then who?” Robin Bailey inquired further.
“Is that what you’re after?” Gina Backer seemed confused.
“Or do you believe otherwise?” Robin Bailey retorted.
Gina Backer breathed a sigh of relief at his response and then said somewhat teary-eyed, “I came on my own. I’m a journalist and today I accidentally took a photo that I wanted to upload online, but for some reason, it wouldn’t upload. The network was fine, everything else uploaded except for that one picture of you.”
“Just that?” Robin Bailey raised an eyebrow.
“Yes,” Gina Backer nodded.
“In that case, you may leave,” Robin Bailey gestured for her to go. He could tell she wasn’t lying, he had that skill.
“Is… is that it?” Gina Backer paused before asking, “Can you tell me why your photo couldn’t upload? I’ve never encountered this issue before.”
She was curious and wanted to get to the bottom of it.
“Because…” Robin Bailey drew out the suspense, making Gina Backer focus all her attention on him before saying, “Because you’re not qualified to upload my photo.”
It was the truth, but it didn’t sit well with Gina Backer.
“What do you mean, look down on me?” Gina Backer huffed.
“Yes, look down on you,” Robin Bailey found Gina Backer’s anger somewhat cute, so he teased her a bit.
“You!” Gina Backer’s anger flared up even more as she pointed at Robin Bailey. “Just you wait, not being able to upload a photo isn’t a big deal. Just wait until I find out everything about you and get that photo uploaded. You’ll regret looking down on me.”
With those words, she stormed out. Isabella Turner, who had been filming outside but keeping an eye on Gina Backer, saw her leaving. Despite being dressed nicely and looking a bit upset, Isabella sighed in relief. She wasn’t sure why she felt relieved, but it wasn’t what she had expected, which was a relief in itself. It made her see the beauty in the world for a moment.
Meanwhile, Gina Backer muttered to herself as she walked out, “What’s the meaning of this? What do you mean by not qualified, what do you mean by ‘yes, look down on me’? I, Gina Backer, have never been wronged like this before. What’s with these people, what’s their intention?”
She felt like crying.
As she continued mumbling and planned to head towards the bus stop on the other side of the street, she was surprised to see three black Jaguars stop in front of her. Several burly men in black suits and sunglasses got out of two of the cars and bowed respectfully to her, calling her “Miss.”
The Backer family, one of the noble families in West State, held a prestigious status that ordinary people couldn’t comprehend.
“What are you all here for again? I told you, I want to gain experience, I want to live on my own,” Gina Backer said angrily when she saw them.
They had come again.
However, a man with an imposing demeanor stepped out of one of the cars and addressed her, “My dear sister, you’ve had enough time to gain experience. You’ve been living like a regular person for a month now. It’s time to come back with us. By the way, I just found out someone had threatened you. I’ll make sure to bankrupt that company for daring to bully my sister, Gina Backer.”
This man was Hannibal Backer, the eldest son of the Backer family and a powerful figure. He doted on his sister.
Unlike Isabella Turner’s tragic fate, Gina Backer was the only girl in the family and the daughter of the family head. Showered with affection from her father and eldest brother, Gina Backer had grown up surrounded by love and attention from a young age.
Spoiled in every possible way.
However, due to her good upbringing and personality, Gina Backer had always wanted to gain experience and live a normal life.
In reality, she was perfectly capable of living an ordinary life.
But they still came looking for her.
“Brother… I need to tell you, don’t bankrupt that company. This was my fault, I took the picture, so they’re not bullying me. You can’t retaliate against them. And I’ve said it already, I want to live on my own. Please leave me alone, why are you here again? Go away, go away. When I feel like I’ve gained enough experience, I’ll come back on my own,” Gina Backer’s expression changed as she quickly clarified.
She was afraid that if she didn’t say it soon enough, her brother would indeed bankrupt the company. Her brother had the power to do so, as the Backer family, with its influence in Yushan Province, was a force to be reckoned with.
She didn’t even know the full extent of their power.
In any case, her father had said she could roam freely in West State.
Relieved, she sighed internally, thankful that Robin Bailey hadn’t harassed her outside. If Hannibal Backer, the protective brother, found out what he had said, that guy might end up in trouble.
So, she kept her mouth shut and didn’t reveal anything.
