Mood Swings

We had selected a doctor with a private practice who also had delivery privileges at a well-known city hospital. Although she was technically not admitting any new patients at the moment, Nicholas informed me that she was tremendously sought lu after and used inf all to get her to accept me as a patient.
If you really desired something bad enough, money could make it happen.
Nicholas interrupted my thoughts, “I’ve been thinking about something you said last night. Rosemary undoubtedly confronted my father with allegations, but I’m curious if she really knows about the contract. She might have taken a shot at the dark.”
I could see where he was headed because I was thinking about the same thing.
“How did she learn about the contract, if she is not taking a guess?”
He shook his head. “I, you, Lorelei, and Benson were the only ones who know. Even Virgil and Laura are unaware of everything.”
“And you’re certain you left nothing behind at work?”
“No. I double-checked to be certain. After our initial encounter, I brought everything home with me, and Benson later delivered the documents himself.”
“I still don’t have faith in Julia.”
He gave my hand a squeeze. “I do not as well. I’ve kept a careful eye on her, and Virgil is looking through her work and personal phone records. I can’t think of a way she would find out, but I will not exclude her from the possibilities.”
Nicholas had wanted to dismiss Julia as soon as the cryptic letter addressed to me appeared and she angrily cut off our phone call. But after giving it some thought, he said he would just keep her around long enough to find out what she was up to.
It was a good idea to keep an eye on her even if I detested her.
“I’m sure Lory wouldn’t tell anyone,” I prompted.
He inquired, “What about Francis.”
I shook my head. “No. She hasn’t spoken to Francis at all. If she had slipped and revealed something, she would have let me know.”
Nicholas had not shown any anger at all when I told him about Lory and Francis. He actually stated that he had known by how obvious they were.
“The next step is to consider the possibility that Benson is somehow involved.”
He was cursing under his breath as I stroked his arm, doing everything I could to make him feel better. Above all else, betrayed him. Although it was difficult to imagine that his attorney would reveal information, that was the only reasonable answer.
” But the agreement is irrelevant nonetheless, right? You instructed Benson to trash our copies after. That we wanted to scrap it?”
“Yes. It should be completely gone. I simply don’t believe that he doesn’t have a copy or hasn’t told someone else about it.”
I was experiencing nausea and anxiety, which made it difficult for me to be in the backseat of the car. Fortunately, it wasn’t bad enough that I needed John to pull over and puke on the side of the road.
When we arrived at the doctor’s office, Nicholas assisted me in getting out of the car and gave me a hug before we entered.
“Hey, don’t be concerned about Rosemary, my dad, Benson, or anything else. Please keep your attention on the baby. I will handle everything else.”
I squeezed his hand while attempting to smile at him. Though in theory, it made sense, I was prone to care about everything and anything. I didn’t, however, tell him that . As
soon as we entered, I liked the sleek and relaxing atmosphere and felt at home. I requested the necessary documentation from the front desk staff, and Nicholas and I sat down to complete it. We were the only ones in the waiting room as we had taken the earliest slot available.
We received a call almost immediately after I finished filling out the paperwork. A technician weighed me, took my vital signs, collected blood and urine samples, and gave me a gown to put on before seeing the doctor. It was incredibly silky and a lovely shade of pink. Definitely superior to the rough paper gown I was anticipating.
After she had left, Nicholas inquired, “Do you want me to stay?”
I blinked. “Yes, if that’s okay. Just take a seat next to the bed and hold my hand so that I don’t panic.”
Although I wasn’t aware of how intrusive my pelvic exam would be, it still gave me the jitters. Nicholas needed to be there with me.
About five minutes later, Dr. Whitney entered the room with a charming smile. She held out her hand for both of us to take.
“Lovely meeting you, Mr. and Mrs. Rowe.”
“Call me Willow, please.”
“You may also call me Whitney.”
I made an effort to unwind as much as possible because she appeared nice.
“I want to start by congratulating you. Our rapid blood test revealed that you are definitely pregnant.” She stood next to the bed, inspecting my chart. “Almost two and a half months have passed since your last period?”
I smiled while nodding. “But I ‘ve never had regular cycles.”
She merely smiled. “That’s alright. Today, we’ll perform an ultrasound to determine the fetus’s age. I’ll perform a short pelvic examination.”
As she pressed and prodded, she asked me to describe my symptoms.
I held onto Nicholas’ hand despite the physician being gentle. “I have been tired but I don’t have much nausea. It has only been a few days since I felt like puking at all.”
“That’s excellent news. But don’t worry if you feel nauseous all the time. It should recede in your second trimester, though.”
I couldn’t make out what Nicholas was saying as he knelt down and whispered in my ear.
“What?”
He said, “Tell her about the mood swings.”
I grimaced. “Which mood swings?”
He swallowed as his eyes widened. “You, I mean, you know, right?”
“No, I don’t believe I do. Please provide more details .” I didn’t even try to mask my rage with sarcasm.
