Chapter 71: A Struggle for Survival

Book:Beloved by the Hardhearted Avenger Published:2024-5-31

Ding Manman wants to escape from these high walls, and obviously she is under the influence of martial arts novels and underestimates the difficulty of going out. She firstly piles together all the tables and high stools in the room, after which she makes great efforts to overcome her fear of height and climbs up. However, to her disappointment, although her hands can touch the wall, her arms are not strong enough, so she has to give up. Half an hour has passed after Ding Manman did all of these. But things are not getting better at all, and her mobile phone also tells her that the battery is running low. If she continues to hang back, even if she can get out of here, there is no way for her to contact anybody. Ding Manman doesn’t need to think how dangerous it will be for her, a single woman, to walk alone at night in this district. Thinking of this, Ding Manman totally loses her confidence. Having no other choice, she decides to fight for her own life. Carefully observing the surroundings again, Ding Manman finds that the door is made of wood. It means that as long as the wooden door is burnt, she can get out.
Coming up with such a plan, Ding Manman once again has the impulse to beat herself up for lack of life experience. Putting some books and newspapers in the crack of the door, she ignites them with another book lit in the kitchen. While starting the fire, Ding Manman hesitates for many times as she is afraid of burning herself, but finally she chooses to continue. Finishing these, Ding Manman feels that her legs are even slightly shaking. She has once read the news that how difficult it will be to put out a big fire. Now, although she is a little discontented with An Ya who hasn’t come to help her after such a long time, she still cherishes their friendship. So she hurries back to the kitchen to prepare a basin of water, in order to put out the fire at any time. But this time God doesn’t help her. Though all the paper is burnt out, the wooden door remains intact, as the fire nearly does no harm to it, except for some black burning traces. For a moment, Ding Manman has a feeling of exhaustion, but she still encourages herself to be optimistic. Taking a look at the sky, she finds that it’s already at dusk.
Having lived a life of ease for so many days, for the first time Ding Manman thinks it better to have someone around her. She also remembers that when Zhong Shaoting was around, no matter where she escaped, he would always catch her. If there were such a predicament, she must have been taken away by Zhong several hours ago. Ding Manman can’t understand why her family and friends, who she has spent so much time with, hurt her again and again. However, Zhong Shaoting, the man who tortured her, humiliated her, and even destroyed her life, could protect her time after time. Taking a deep breath again, Ding Manman cheers herself up and swears to get out of here today! When she gets out, she is bound to question An Ya whether they are good friends or not, and she will also question her own parents whether, in their eyes, the company and money are more important than their own daughter! Turning anger and grief into strength, Ding Manman is determined to fight with all her power. This time, Ding Manman takes apart all the furniture at home, including the wardrobe, chairs and tables. All the broken furniture is used as scrap wood and is thrown at the door, in which way Ding believes that the door will absolutely be broken.
However, when Ding Manman is busy preparing inside, she misses the slight noise coming from outside. Otherwise, she will stop what she is doing and waits quietly. Because wood is not as easy to light as paper, plus that Ding Manman knows this is her last chance, she carefully splashes cooking oil on the wood to support combustion. After such efforts, Ding Manman finally lights the fire. Looking at the growing fire, Ding Manman thinks nervously whether her attempt can succeed. The various leaps of the flame look very strange, and the sparkles that burst out in the dark night are particularly dazzling. Being very tired, Ding Manman sits far away from the fire, while the heat of which, like mother’s embrace in the days long past, gives her much warmth and comfort. After a while, the wooden door is finally ignited. Seeing the hope to escape, Ding Manman starts to feel happy with her nervousness gradually disappearing. Back against the wall, she falls asleep deeply. Suddenly, outside the door comes a sound, which is loud enough to awaken Ding Manman from her sleep.
“Is that An Ya?” Ding Manman asks with curiosity. But she only hears the voice of men, which makes her very nervous. Ding Manman has no idea whether those people outside the door are good or bad. As the wooden door is still burning, she believes that it can hold on for a while, in which case she quickly goes back to her room and hides herself in a small corner to wait and see.
Since the burning wooden door makes loud noises, those men outside the door fail to hear Ding’s cry for help. Zhong Shaoting, who is the head, refuses to listen to the advice of other people around him. Despite the dense smoke, he walks directly to the door and shouts: “Ding Manman, are you in there?” Seeing that Zhong Shaoting is about to rush into the fire, Song Chen, who stands beside, grabs him and shouts: “You are risking your life! This fire is only burning at the door. Maybe Miss Ding is trying to escape in her way. Don’t be so worried!” “Let me go! Can you expect such a silly woman to escape by herself? I’ve called her, but there is no response. Maybe something unexpected has happened. So I must go inside and have a look!”
In spite of his unkind words about Ding Manman, Zhong Shaoting still tries to rush into the room.
In such a situation, even though Song Chen has a good impression of Ding Manman, he will absolutely not allow Zhong Shaoting to risk his own life like this. “Boss, please calm down and don’t be so crazy. Perhaps Miss Ding is very safe inside, just waiting to laugh at you.” In case that Zhong Shaoting loses his mind, Song Chen makes up such an excuse which can’t even convince himself. But when Zhong Shaoting hears his words, he can’t help remembering what happened before. At that time, Ding Manman, whom he couldn’t control very well, was always trying to escape. Once she managed to run away, and her secret smile was caught by the surveillance camera, which had a deep impression on him. “OK, go to find a ladder, I am waiting for you here.” Giving an order to Song Chen, Zhong Shaoting looks at the flame around the door with an unconscious frown.
Every miller draws water to his own mill. After Ding Manman left him, Zhong Shaoting once thought about getting her back. He couldn’t tell why. But he just remembered that the closer she was to him, the more he felt at ease. But after the negotiation with the Ding Family, he was rejected. Feeling disappointed, he went back to his own city, handling his company’s affairs every day, or having fun with his friends till late at night. Obviously, he lived the same life as before, but he felt a void in his heart, which he couldn’t bear. Finally, he decided to take a look at Ding Manman. It seems that even one glance at her would help him forget his numerous gloomy thoughts. He came in a hurry after investigating where Ding Manman lives. But beyond his expectation, he finds that the alley where Ding lives has been sealed by a new cement wall, and a signal shielding device is deliberately placed nearby.
