The answer Thea gave was genuine, but she really didn’t expect Cody to get everything ready the next morning.
Her jaw almost dropped on the carpet when she saw the engagement rings on the table, and those formalities proved legally that they were a married couple, despite the fact that they didn’t even hold a wedding ceremony yet.
Thea didn’t remember going to any law department with Cody to get registered. Cody must have used some of his connections in the government to have all these files done.
She felt both confused and betrayed.
“You just woke up?” Cody smiled, “I was wondering what time you were gonna wake up. What do you want to eat for breakfast, though?”
“What… What are these, Cody?” Thea’s voice was trembling as she looked at those files on the table.
“Oh, that,” Cody smiled shyly, “We’re a married couple now, legally. I figured the wedding was just a ceremony. We can hold it when you think the time fits. Right now, I know you only want to do your job.”
“No… It’s not the wedding. When did you… How did you…” Thea couldn’t even spit out a coherent sentence.
She was completely shocked. She thought her relationship with Cody would get a bit more intimate after last night. But she didn’t expect to become Mrs. Bradley when she opened her eyes the next morning.
“I have some friends in the law department of the government,” Cody smiled, “I asked a favor from them. You’re a busy bee, and you don’t have time to run around and get these things done. So I decided to do it for you.”
Of course, with that much money and influence, this man could get whatever he wanted.
Thea went pale as she collapsed against her chair.
Cody didn’t expect Thea’s reaction to being like this. He had asked her to marry him, and she had said yes.
That was why he instantly got those files done.
He didn’t expect to see Thea be so sad.
“Hey… Thea, are you okay?” Cody went forth, trying to hold her.
“Don’t touch me!” Thea slapped his hands away.
Thea had never acted like this before since they met each other.
Cody swallowed and went back to his seat, not saying anything anymore.
Thea grabbed those files and was ready to tear them into pieces.
Cody instantly went to stop her, “Thea! Wait! I only have one question to ask you!”
“Just shut up, Cody. I don’t want to hear what you said,” Thea cried, “You’ve planned this, haven’t you? It was just a trap last night.”
“No! It was not a trap. I asked you to marry me, and you agreed.” Cody explained.
“But I didn’t say I will marry you the next day.” Thea looked devastated, “You were playing word games with me. It’s cunning!”
Thea was pale, and her tears were rolling down her cheeks.
Cody instantly went panicked. He went forth and held Thea in his arms, “I’m sorry…. I’m so sorry. Please don’t be mad. I was wrong. I was being stupid. You said you would marry me, and I was overjoyed. I should have been patient.”
Thea was still mad, “Let’s go to the marriage register department right now. I want to divorce you. I’m not marrying you!”
Cody’s heart went cold. His eyes instantly went red. He dropped his gaze and tried to steady his breath.
After a while, he finally said, “If getting divorced could make you feel better, I will go with you. Just don’t be mad.”
Thea didn’t even want to look at him. She was only crying, “Then we need to hurry up. I want to get this done today.”
“Will tomorrow work?” Cody looked up, “We can go there tomorrow. That place is pretty far. When we get there, they will probably have gone home.”
Cody was simply being honest.
“I’m sorry, Thea… I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Just stop saying anything.” Thea shot up from her seat and ran into her room, locking the door from the inside.
Right now, her head was a mess, and she didn’t even know what to do anymore.
She said she wanted to marry Cody, but she didn’t expect it to happen so soon.
If she got married now, how was she gonna continue her work? She still needed to realize her dream before she established a family and had a baby.
Moreover, Cody finished all these without asking her. That kind of stuff wouldn’t be finished overnight. He must have started to prepare this a couple of weeks ago.
Was all this just his plan?
This man was so sneaky. Thea felt betrayed.
Cody was still standing outside her door. His voice was gentle and regretful, “Thea… I’m sorry. I know you’re mad at me. But you need to at least eat your breakfast.”
Thea didn’t answer.
Cody sighed and leaned forward, pressing his forehead against the door, “I admit I got over excited after you said yes, Thea. I’m an idiot t. But you know me… I always need to be 100% sure, or I will never feel safe. I thought that yes meant that you’re already my wife… I know I tend to be arrogant and neglect other people’s feelings. But I swear that I did that because I don’t want to lose you. I’ve already lost you once. 17 years ago, that flood took you away from me. During the last 17 years, I have always thought about the future we almost had. If you were still with me, we would have shared so many happy memories. Thea, I love you very much. And I don’t want to waste a single minute anymore. I’m sorry for being so impatient, but life is too short to be indecisive. I just want to be with you as soon as possible. I… I’m sorry for my stupidity, okay?”
“But you should have at least talked to me,” Thea cried on the other side of the door, “You didn’t respect my decision at all. It’s foul, Cody.”
