“I know you, and that’s why I can’t trust you,” Enzo hissed to the phone, “I know you will kill everyone to keep the secret. But Linford and I are the only people who saw the content of the drive. If you let go of our family, we will let you kill us. What do you say?”
Are you out of your mind? Linford shot Enzo a warning look.
“Fair enough. Bring that thing to me, and your family shall be unharmed,” the cold voice demanded on the other side of the phone.
“Fine!” Enzo hung up the call after the conversation was over.
Linford went furious as he yelled at Enzo, “What the heck is wrong with you? You can’t just believe him just because he used to train you!”
That man used to train Enzo? Cody arched an eyebrow. He must be pretty good himself, then.
“You need to calm down. Of course, I would never believe him. I know he would definitely kill everyone if he had the chance. But there are too many people involved. Are you sure you want to take any risk? Think about Cristelle and the twins!”
Linford’s voice was trembling, “This piece of evidence probably won’t even be useful in the court. We don’t know what we’re dealing with right now. It’s just too easy for him to kill us all.”
“What do you wanna do then? He knows our traces and our faces. There’s no use even if we want to hide the backup.”
Cody cleared his throat, “Um… Whoever you’re talking about. I don’t think he knows about my existence.”
“No!” Enzo and Linford snapped their heads toward Cody together.
Cody sighed, “What else are you gonna do then? The bad guy can’t have evidence, right? What else could you do except give a copy to the police? That guy definitely wants to see you both, or Mom and Candace would be in danger. We need to split up if we don’t want to get killed.”
Enzo and Linford exchanged a look. Cody was right. They didn’t have much time left. “What are you gonna do? Can you even make it to the police safely?” Enzo asked, frowning.
“Seriously?” Cody rolled his eyes, “After what we went through on that island, Uncle, you’re gonna take me as an ordinary five-year-old? Just give me a copy and drop me at a secret location. I can go to the police and ask them to send backups. If this drive is unimportant, that guy wouldn’t have to get out of his way to make that phone call. You two must see him instantly and give him the illusion that you’re waving a white flag. So I’ll have enough time to do this.”
Enzo and Linford both went silent. Sending a kid to the police station was dangerous. But they didn’t have any other choice now. Everybody else would get attention.
“Enzo, could you send some new faces to escort Cody secretly?” Linford turned to his brother and asked.
“Are you out of your mind, Linford?” Enzo hissed, “He’s just a boy.”
“I trust him. He can do this,” The look on Linford’s face was determined. Cody looked at his dad in surprise.
“Fine!” Enzo clenched his teeth, “I can’t make any phone calls or contact them directly since our lines might be spied on. But we’ve got secret codes. They will help Cody once they figure out it was my instruction.” Enzo tore a piece of paper from his notebook and wrote something down.
“Uncle, hurry up. We’re running out of time,” Cody urged him.
“I’ve written down the address on this as well, Cody.” Enzo crouched down and inserted the folded piece of paper in Cody’s fist, “You go to this place and find a man called Luca Young. He will know what to do after seeing the piece of paper. Oh, and show him this,” Enzo took off the name tag on his neck and put the necklace around Cody’s neck.
“Okay,” Cody nodded, “I’ve got this. You two protect Mom, Candace, and other people back home.”
“We will,” Linford promised solemnly. The jet hovered above the mountain using the cover of the trees.
Cody jumped off the ladder, holding an electric skateboard under one arm. The station of Enzo’s men was at the foot of the mountain. He needed to find the highway and get to the station in three hours.
They didn’t have any time to waste. The boy used the compass on his phone and soon found the road.
What he didn’t know was that Enzo had sent a piece of coded message to Luca already, telling him to take the boy and hide if things didn’t go well.
If things got out of control, this was probably a way to keep Cody safe. He would probably be the last Bradley alive in the end. But the family legacy at least could last.
Linford knew what Enzo did, but he also trusted his genius son.
Cody found Luca using less time in the station. Luca didn’t hesitate as he got the instruction. He took the boy to the city center immediately.
However, he couldn’t get rid of the feeling that someone was on their tail. The evidence needed to be sent to the very center of the police power. Sending it to a random station would cause a series of reports to higher levels. And that would alert the man who made the phone call to threaten them on the jet. Cody knew it very well.
After driving past a couple of blocks, the boy suggested Luca get off and walk toward the government through the alleys, so they would be able to get rid of those people who secretly tailed them.
Luca did what Cody suggested. However, when they got into an alley, someone suddenly shouted behind their back, “Stop! Put your hands above your heads! I have a gun!”
Cody spun around and saw Miles standing there, holding a gun. Luca tried to carry the boy and run. But Miles just fired before he could react.
Cody’s body was shaking as Luca fell limply and lifelessly before him. “What do you want?” Cody clenched his teeth, trying his best to keep himself calm.
“Whatever you’re having in your hands, boy,” Miles smirked evilly, “I want you to give it to me right now.”
“Or you will kill me?” Cody breathed, eyes scanning alertly around, trying to find a way out.
“Yeah, did you see him?” Miles used the gun to point at Luca’s corpse, “You will just be like him or even worse.”
Cody let out a sigh, “Fine!”
