She knew how much they cared about each other, but they were both too proud to show it.
“I’ll try.” Linford’s shoulders slumped.
“Good,” Cristelle took a look at her watch, “I gotta go.”
“So soon?” Linford tried to stop her, “Why don’t you stay with me for a while?”
“I don’t think so. Fritzi’s still waiting,” Cristelle grabbed the file and was ready to go, “I’m going back home soon. The babies must have come back. I need to spend more time with them.”
Linford had known that Cristelle went to Jasper’s studio today. He didn’t like it, but he also didn’t show disgust. “I’ll send a driver to drive you back home later.”
Cristelle nodded and walked out of the door. When Cristelle disappeared at the end of the corridor, Lana showed up. She hadn’t left even though she was pushed out of the office. She had been eavesdropping on their conversation.
Lana tried to hide it, but the jealousy in her eyes was so dense. It could barely be disguised.
Cristelle walked out of the office after giving the file to Fritzi. When she got home, Candace and Cody had already come back. Candace was holding a little box. It looked quite exquisite.
She ran over the moment she saw her Mom.
“Mommy!”
Cristelle bent down and picked her up, “What are you holding in your hands, sweetie?”
“Cake. I brought it from Mr. Weston’s,” Candace showed Cristelle.
Cristelle smiled, “Really? Is this a gift from Mr. Weston? Did you give Mr. Weston any gifts in return?”
“I did.” Candace nodded proudly. “I danced.”
They played puzzles for a while before dinner. Then, after Linford came back, they enjoyed their meal before going to bed.
Candace fell asleep quickly because she wanted to go to Amy’s again the next morning.
Cody took a bath before he came to Cristelle’s room.
Cristelle held the door open and saw the boy’s serious little face. She was so excited as she picked Cody up, “Do you want to sleep with Mommy tonight, honey?”
Cody was so speechless as he struggled, “Mom, put me down first. Please.”
Cristelle didn’t want to. But the boy insisted, so she put him on a tall chair, “What’s wrong, sweetie?”
“Why did you go back to our hometown?” Cody asked.
Cristelle wasn’t expecting a question like this. She answered honestly, “I have some issues to handle back there.”
“What issues?” Cody was determined to figure out the truth.
Cristelle didn’t have another choice. She could only tell Cody about the contract, knowing the boy was too smart to be kept blind anyway.
After spilling out everything, Cristelle sighed, “Your Mom is now completely unemployed. I’m still trying to find a new job.”
Cody pondered for a while, “Mom, let’s not see Jasper again. I don’t want you to have any connection with that man anymore.”
Cristelle knew what Cody was worried about, “It’s okay, honey. I won’t see him again.”
“Cool,” Cody jumped off the chair after getting the answer he wanted, “I’m going back to sleep, Mom. Goodnight.”
“Why don’t you stay and sleep with your sister and me?” Cristelle tried to make the boy stay.
Cody looked at Candace. His sister was sleeping so soundly that she was drooling all over the pillow, “I don’t think so, Mommy. Goodnight.” With that, he walked out of the room and closed the door gently behind him.
Cristelle sighed and went back to bed.
Candace woke up quite early the next morning. She called Amy on the phone as Cristelle combed her long blonde hair.
Cristelle had never expected Candace to be so “socially friendly.”
Linford was free today, so he proposed to go with them as well. Candace was excited.
However, before their car was about to leave the door, Linford’s phone suddenly started ringing.
It was a call from Lana, “Um… Linford. We need you here right now. Something just happened, and we need your decision.”
After Alfred left, Linford left everything to the secretaries and Lana. But clearly, Lana sometimes just couldn’t do the job. Linford had to handle a lot of problems by himself.
“Lana, why are you so useless?” Linford was deeply annoyed.
Lana whined something on the phone.
Cody strained his ears to hear the conversation.
Lana? That woman even started to work in his company now? Cody silently got annoyed.
Linford scowled before hanging up the phone abruptly. He turned to look at Cristelle apologetically,
“I’m sorry.”
Cristelle knew the company must need his time, so she smiled, “It’s okay. Just go if they need you.”
Linford sighed and hugged Candace, “I’ll make up for this, sweetie.”
Candace was a bit upset, but she couldn’t show that to her father, “It’s okay.”
Cody rolled his eyes, refusing to look at Linford.
“It doesn’t matter, Linford. Just mind your business. I’ll drive them,” Cristelle took the key from him.
Linford didn’t leave until he fastened Cristelle’s safety belt. He wanted to give her a kiss, but Cody was sitting in the backseat right now, pulling a face, “Be safe and come back early, I’ll be waiting.”
Cristelle nodded, smiling.
Cristelle knew where Watson’s house was. She drove smoothly down the road.
However, the road she would usually take was being fixed right now. Cristelle could only take another route, “We’ll probably be a couple of minutes late today. Would you mind calling Amy and letting her know?” Cristelle asked Candace.
Candace nodded and grabbed her little cell phone, calling her best friend immediately.
Cristelle smiled in the rear-view mirror. Candace finally had some close friends, except her twin brother.
Cristelle turned the car and got on another road. The red light was on. The car was pretty close to a construction site. There are clearly skyscrapers in this area.
Suddenly, a slab of granite fell off the building, falling right on top of their car.
Cristelle was looking forward with her hands on the wheel, not aware of the danger at all.
Some people from a distance noticed that first, yelling, “Be careful! On top of you!”
Cody was the first one in the car who noticed it, screaming, “MOM!!”
Cristelle only noticed the danger as she heard Cody’s voice. In that split second, she whirled her steering wheel and gunned her car off the shoulder of the road. The car drove right into the flower bed and stopped with a jolt.
CRASH!
The slab of huge rock was smashed into pieces on the road. Cristelle felt lucky that no other car was pulling over beside hers when she tried to drive away.
The passers-by all stopped and started to scream as someone just jumped off the building and fell right on the slab of granite.
It didn’t take too long for ambulances and police cruisers to come.
