BETH.
I was trying to sort out some important documents in the office when Tony’s call came in. Ever since I had agreed to trust him, he had been the best man I could ever ask for.
He would call and visit constantly with presents, invite me on dates, tell me every detail of his day and discuss his vital decisions with me. He also constantly checks up on his baby, and we go to the hospital together for checkups. It was like he truly wanted a future with me, and I couldn’t be happier.
I could not help but think about Lara and I wondered why she messed up being with a good man like Tony.
“Babe,” he called as soon as I picked up the call. “What’s up? How’s the day going?”
“Fine, work’s going well. How’s yours going?” I asked him, smiling from ear to ear.
“Also good. Just wanted to check on my baby and his mother.”
I chuckled lightly. He never stopped talking about the baby being a male, and I had stopped arguing with him about it. Anyone it was, I was fine with it.
“Your baby and his mother are doing fine. Thank you for checking up on us. I hope you’re-” There was a knock on the door. “I have a visitor, I’ll call you later.”
“Sure,” he said and hung up immediately.
“Who’s there?” I asked, dropping my phone on my office desk. I picked up the tablet on the table and went through my schedule. I didn’t have any meetings with anyone, so I wasn’t expecting anyone. I wondered who it was. “Come in,” I added.
The door opened and Yeesha walked in. I cleared my throat and dropped the tablet on the desk. “Have your seat,” I said to her with a straight face.
She pulled a chair closer to herself and sat on it, across my table. “How’ve you been?” She asked.
“Good.”
“But why haven’t you been replying to my texts? Don’t tell me you didn’t see them, ’cause I know you read them. It always shows that you’ve seen it here.” She said.
She had been texting me ever since the day my video went viral, and I hadn’t been replying to her texts. I was pissed and hurt that none of them could call Lara and talk to her about how wrong she was about a lot of things.
“Would you reply to your texts if you were me?” I asked her and she let out a sigh. “Funny how you and Janet once encouraged me to go on with whatever was going to happen between Tony and me, despite knowing he was with Lara then. Do you think she’d still be your friend if I told her what you did?”
“Beth, I’m sorry for everything. I know how much everything that’s happening right now would hurt you, but I want you to know that I’m not in support of the embarrassment Lara put you through.” She explained. “Although, I’m not siding you either, because, in a way, you’re also at fault, but I’m not supporting Lara too.”
“Are you only telling me that because she’s not here?” I asked, unconvinced by her words.
“No, Beth. I told her everything some days back because I wasn’t comfortable with the way you sacrificed so much for her and she still treated you this way.”
I raised my eyebrows at her, wondering if that was even possible. I knew the girls, and one thing I’ve noticed is that they were sort of scared of Lara. That explains why they never tell her the truth even when it’s obvious that she’s doing the wrong thing. If what Yeesha was saying was true, then I could bet my life that Lara wouldn’t take it lightly with her. “And what did Lara say? She acknowledged her mistakes?”
Yeesha chuckled lightly. “Lara? Acknowledge her mistakes? Is that even possible?” She scoffed. “She chased me out of her house and told me never to step foot there again.”
“What?!” I was shocked to hear that. I knew Lara could be hot-tempered, but I didn’t expect her to say something of that sort to any of her friends. “How-”
My office door went ajar and Lucy barged in. I rolled my eyes, wondering why she was there. Despite Lucy being my half-sister and we both working at our father’s company, we never associated with each other. She has never liked me, just like her mother didn’t like my mother, so I maintained the distance. That explains why it was surprising to see her in my office, because thinking about it, no office work joined us together that week.
“You could have knocked before coming in, Lucy. What if I was holding a meeting?” I asked her firmly.
“And that is none of my business, whore.” She said and folded her arms, now standing right in front of my table. Yeesha turned to look at her.
“What did you just call me?” I asked, standing up from my seat slowly.
“A whore, because that’s exactly what you are.” She replied to me confidently.
I felt the urge to raise my hand and slap her face, but I resisted it. I had so much going on already, and I didn’t want violence to join it. So, I maintained my cool as I’ve always done.
“If you have nothing important to say, leave. I am in no mood for this flimsy fight you want to cause this afternoon, Lucy.”
“Of course, you can’t be in the mood.” She scoffed. “I decided to let you be initially, but now I see that you’re no different from your mother. Oh, because I didn’t say anything about you being a man snatcher?” She asked and chuckled evilly. “I felt that was none of my business, which was why I didn’t approach you about that. But now that you and your mother want to destroy our lovely home with your dumb plans? Nah, you can never get through with it.”
“Uhm, I’ll excuse myself now,” Yeesha said, and I nodded. Then she picked up her bag and left the office.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Lucy. What’s all this? This is my office and you have no right to bring a personal issue here!” I snapped at her.
“This is also my workplace and my father owns this place, so-”
“Point of correction. Our father owns this place. So, know how you speak to me because I can always report you to him.”
Although I was his mistress’s child, my father loves me a lot and he never fails to show it at any opportunity he gets. This wasn’t hidden from Lucy and her mother as well, and that was more reason why Lucy hated me; I am my father’s favourite child.
She chuckled and said, “that’s the only defence mechanism you have; reporting to father. But one thing I want you to know is that no matter how hard you plan, you and your mother will never win! I am not surprised that you also took your mother’s steps. Lara has told my mother all your plans and I promise you, if you try anything funny, you’d be dealt with.” I was about to speak when she added, ” I won’t be surprised if your generation continues being mistresses for married men. You homewrecker! Bitch!” She yelled and spat on my table before storming out of the office, slamming the door shut behind her.
I sat on my chair as everything that she said replayed in my head. Lara was at it again, but what I needed to do first was to call my mother. “I hope she’s okay,” I muttered.
