CHAPTER 41- Confrontation at the gate
The next day I managed to make it out of my bedroom. Between Hunter and the throwing up I am going to just crawl in bed until the end of forever. I pulled it together enough to get to the office. It is late afternoon, Hunter and Jay should be back soon. At this point I told my dad that I am not going to school. Not only that, I really don’t want to face Nick right now.
I am bent over my desk, or rather my dad’s desk doing paperwork. He took off this morning claiming he had a meeting and would be gone all day, thus leaving me in charge. I got a link from Jay. “We should be home soon, I think we are supposed to go straight to patrolling the north side. I am with Hunter today. I know if he sees you, we will never get there.” I hear the joke in the last part.
“I will stay scarce.” I chuckle to myself and get back to my paperwork.
I am getting into the groove of the papers when another link comes through. “Alpha, there is someone here who claims to be looking for you.” Kyle, our gate guard.
“What’s the name?” I don’t even blink, I just keep doing the paperwork.
“He says his name is Nick. He is human.”
“Fuck, alright I will be right down, do not let him past the gate.” I slam down the papers that I was working on. Why the fuck is he here? How did he even find us?
I storm down the drive to the gate. I wave to Kyle to open the gate for me. He does and closes it right behind me. I see Nick standing next to a little suberu.
He gives me a big smile. “You weren’t kidding, your dad really is paranoid.”
I sigh, already exasperated. I did everything possible to avoid this guy and yet here he is at my front gate. “What are you doing here Nick?”
“I’m sorry. I screwed up. I pushed you. I said things that I shouldn’t have. I thought I would see you at school today and be able to apologize, but you didn’t come. I needed to talk to you. So I went to the extremes.” He inches closer, not that I am letting him get that close and I can see Kyle visibly go on the defensive.
I put my hand up to stop Kyle. I know that Nick isn’t going to hurt me. “So, you what, stalked Jay. Is that what you did? I don’t see any other way that you would know where I lived.”
“Yeah.” He cringes.
Before I can say anything else, Allison comes out of nowhere and grabs Nick by the neck. “My, my, if it isn’t the little human.”
I hold back a growl. Why didn’t I kill the bitch when I had the chance? “Allison, let him go. Your beef is with me.”
“You know what, it is, but you see I can’t seem to hurt you. I think if I kill your little human you will be more than hurt.” She has the evilest grin on her face that I have ever seen on a person.
“What, you think because Hunter didn’t leave me for you that you can just kill people to get your way? He isn’t going to pick you, even if you kill Nick.”
She snarls at me. “You don’t even know Hunter. He wants me. It’s just the stupid mate bond that is confusing him. You didn’t see everything in those bushes.” She gets a little satisfied smirk on her face.”
“I don’t need to. Hunter knows I have another man lined up he fucks up again. It didn’t stop him from being the one in my bed last night.” My smirk is even bigger.
She snarls and before anyone can even react, she starts shifting and her claws rake Nick, then she lunges at me while continuing the shift. I can’t shift right now. I dig my feet in and punch her in the jaw. I hear a crack. She falls to the side. Not down yet just diverted. She goes to come at me again and I kick her in the side, before grabbing her skruff and throwing one last blow at her face. She falls over unconscious.
“Get her Kyle.” I growl out. Five wolves come around and start restraining Allison. I turn around to take a look at Nick. He is bleeding pretty bad and he is in shock. The look on his face is evident enough that he might even be close to passing out. I link Dr. WIlliams to come to the front gate with transportation to the clinic. “Great, now what the fuck am I going to do with you?” I try not to growl, but Nick has really put me in a tight spot here.
“You aren’t human.” He pants out. Clearly trying to decide if he is hallucinating.
“No I am not. You weren’t supposed to find out.” I hold his hand until Dr. Williams comes to retrieve him. I have to stay by his side, that is clear, if he runs I am screwed.
Once we are at the clinic Dr. Williams takes him to get the bleeding to stop and I take the time to call the Council. The guy that answered is less than understanding. “I have someone coming that way already for the rogues. He will be there in about an hour, so hang tight till then. I swear your pack is nothing but trouble lately.” He growls at me.
“Thanks for the help.” I mutter as I hang up. The fucking council is supposed to be there to help us, not condem us. Plus if we dealt with the rogues ourselves or even this situation with Nick, we would be the ones in trouble.
Dr. Williams comes out about twenty minutes later. “I got the bleeding to stop, he looked worse than he was. I think it was more shocking than anything. I think the fact that Allison shifted right in front of him and he had never in the world expected that. He is waiting to talk to you.” She motioned for the door.
I nodded and headed into the room. It was a little awkward to see Nick like this. His chest was exposed except for the bandages that were a lot more white than red, which was a good thing. He looked up at me, his face still looked a little shocked. “So, do you turn into one of those things too?” He didn’t sound disgusted at least.
“Yeah. Not at the moment, but usually.” I came a little closer. “You know I wouldn’t hurt you right?”
He is silent for a moment. He is probably thinking, ‘oh, my God what a monster’. “I know. It is a little weird to think of you like that. You did say your family is a little different.” He chuckles a little. Ok, not the reaction I was expecting.
“Nick,…” I am cut off by the door bursting open.
His eyes narrow on me. He grabs me up in his arms. “What the hell were you doing out there? I am going to kill her.” Hunter has me pinned to his chest. His face goes straight to my neck taking in my scent. Then he pulls me back a little. “Are you hurt? They said you weren’t but, I know you lie.”
I smile. “I am fine Hunter. We are fine.”
“I am still not going to be satisfied until the doctor looks you over. I want to make sure she didn’t hurt the baby either.” His voice is stern, he is not budging on this.
I hear Nick behind me, another shock clearly. “Baby.” His voice cracks as the word comes out.
Hunter turns on him. “You are lucky I don’t rip you apart. What the hell were you even doing here?” He growls out and heads towards Nick. I hold him back. Jay comes through the door and holds him back too.
Jay looks at me. “You are lucky this guy even has shorts on at this point. He wanted to run straight here in his fur. I told him that if you were really hurt you would have told me, but he is not in the listening mood. Becoming a dad is making him a little crazy.”
Nick looks at Jay. “You are one too.”
Jay smiles at him. “No, I am something else altogether.” Then he flashes his fangs at Nick. “Actually it might not be a good idea for me to do that. All the blood in here smells really good.”
Hunter stops struggling and pulls back. “I’ll hold him down and you can drain him.” I slap him on the shoulder.
“Hunter, he had no clue what he was walking into. Rest it. We are fine.”
He looks at me and takes in my scent again. I can see him calm again. “Baby, if anything happened to you or the baby, I don’t know what I would have done.” He curls into my arms.
I take his face in my hands and make him look at me. “We are fine. I promise.” He kisses me like I almost died and not Nick.
I hear Nick. “Ok, that is a bit awkward to witness.”
Then Jay replies back. “Yeah, I think I am getting used to it. They do that all the time.” He laughs.
I pull away from Hunter. He rests his forehead on mine. “I am getting the doctor, she is giving you a check up. Then I am going to question the guards and see why the hell they just stood around.”
I roll my eyes. “I will be checked out, but Hunter there wasn’t really time for them to react. They did what they could. Let them be.”
He growls, “Then who am I going to beat?”
“I am sure there will be some rogues soon. They haven’t attacked in at least five days. They are bound to show up soon enough. Speaking of which you need to go back on patrol. We are short now with you and Jay here.”
“Don’t remind me. Fine, but I am not leaving until the doctor says you are fine.” He is not budging.
I smiled and linked the doctor to come back in. She brings a small machine in with her. “I am guessing everyone stays.” She smiles at me.
“I have to stay in here with him until the council shows so, yep.” I nod and sit on the chair in the corner of the room.
“Do you have any pain?”
“Nope, Hunter is being paranoid.” I smile at him.
She moves around some of my limbs, then after about five minutes she is satisfied. “Good, mama is fine, let’s check that baby.” I lean back so that she can have better access to my belly. She pulls down the front of my pants. Not even a hesitation she puts the jelly on my belly. I haven’t heard the heartbeat since last time so I am a little excited actually. Once that wand hits my belly sounds come out. Some static, then a heartbeat. “That is your heartbeat, now let’s find that other one.” She moves around for another moment and then rests on a much faster heartbeat. “There is the one we are looking for. Perfectly normal.” She looks around at Hunter. “Sound good Daddy?” She asked.
He looks stunned. “The most beautiful sound on the planet.” He smiles at me.
Dr. Williams laughs. “Wait till you hear it let out that first cry.”
Nick sounds from the background. “There really is a baby.”
Hunter turns and smiles at him. “Yes, my baby. Got that human. Mine.”
“Hunter,” I growl out a warning as the doctor is wiping me up, chuckling a little bit while she does it.
“Just letting him know that you are mine.” He turns and smiles at me.
Jay laughs. “Wolves, gotta love ’em right? These two are about the most intense I have seen.”
Nick has wide eyes. “I can see that.”
“On top of that, they mate for life, so these two will be like this forever.” Jay laughs even more.
“Ok, that is enough for my love life. Go back on patrol, if the rogues get through I will blame you two.” I growl out at Hunter and Jay.
“Yes, Alpha.” Jay rolls his eyes.
Hunter bends and kisses me. “I’ll be back soon. Don’t get into any more trouble.”
“I won’t if you keep the rogues back.” I smile back at him.
He growls. “Alright, I am going Jeez.”
After he leaves I am left with Nick in an awkward silence. The doctor has left us alone as well. I just have no idea what to say to him. Thankfully, Christian shows up with Eli on his hip. “Thank goodness you are alright.” He says as he comes in the door.
Eli squirms so that Christian will put him down. He sets him down and he runs to me. I smile as I pick him up. “I am perfectly fine.”
“Yeah, well, Aunty Jasmine, seems to think it is ok to go into a dangerous situation on her own. Eli here is very upset about it.”
I can tell that it wasn’t Eli that was upset, it was Christian. “I am fine, Alpha.” I roll my eyes at him.
“What is all this Alpha stuff? That is what Jay called you.” Nick points out. I am not sure how much to tell him.
“That is because we are both Alpha’s. Well, she will be soon. I am Alpha of a neighboring pack.” Christian answers for me. He turns to Nick. “So, this is the human who caused all this trouble.” He almost growls at him.
“Christian, let him be. He didn’t know any better.” I growl back at him. “Remember you are on my land.”
“I remember, if it was my land I would have killed him already. What makes this human so special?” Christian almost spits out at Nick.
“This is why I have human relations and you don’t.” I roll my eyes.
“He endangered you. If you were my Luna I never would have let it happen.” He turns a little softer when he comes back to me.
“Believe me, Hunter wanted to kill him too, but I stopped him. That is not an option. Besides, he is my friend. He just didn’t know this about me.” I sigh.
“Still think that pup needs to take better care of you. Or I am going to take you away from him.”
“Stop calling him that. He is older than me, you know.” I rolled my eyes at him.
“I am talking maturity, not age beautiful.” He winked at me.
“Well, it was my choice to go to the gate alone. I figured that the front gate guard would be enough. I was right. I just didn’t know that Allison would show and attack me directly.” I snuggle Eli a little closer. “The bitch is crazy. She needs to be put down.”
“I would do it gladly.” He smirked at me. “Anyway, I have a call to return to my Beta. I am going to leave Eli in your capable hands. Besides, I don’t think I could pry him away with a crowbar at this point.” He leaned in and kissed Eli on the forehead. “I would kiss you too, but a promise is a promise.” He smiled.
“Get out of here.” I cocked my head to the side to let him know it was a joke. He heads to the door.
As he is leaving he calls back. “Let me know when you want me to whisk you away from all of this.”
I laugh. He knows that isn’t going to happen.
Nick looks me over. “So, you are not only a werewolf but you are their leader.” He sighs and leans his head back. “I knew you were too good for me.”
I can’t help but laugh. “I turn into a mythical beast and I am too good for you.”
He looks at me like I am an idiot. “Yeah, you are strong, powerful, gorgeous, magical and the leader. I was screwed from the beginning.”
“Well, I did tell you that it wasn’t going to last.” I point out.
“I took what I could get. It will definitely be something that I will never forget.” He smirked at me. “I wanted it to be so much more.”
“Look, Nick, I am not sure what is going to happen when the council comes. They make these decisions. It was decided a long time ago that humans can’t know about us. I have never heard of a human who knew what we were. Like Christian said, they are usually killed. Of course I am going to make sure that doesn’t happen, but one of the options is sure to be that they erase your memory.”
He looks at me like I just killed his dog. “I would rather die.” He states. Why the hell am I always stuck with stubborn ass men? It would be better than to die. So he would forget me, so what? We were together for like three days. I am sure it is far better to forget that, than to die. Thank the goddess that the choice will probably be mine and not his.
“Whatever you say Nick. Right now I think you should get some rest. The council member will be here soon. There will be a lot more to discuss then.” I lean back in my chair. This has turned into one hell of a day. Of all the days for my dad to go on a trip.
“Why did you leave school?” I thought he was going to rest, but instead he is still going to play this game.
“I left because it was too much to handle. I am still learning, but at my pace. I was still fighting a bit with Hunter, Christian was pushing for his proposal, the baby and then you.” I sigh, but don’t look at him. “It was too much, I had to cut something out.”
“I’m sorry I made things worse for you. Hell, today probably made way more work for you. I am just glad that you weren’t hurt.”
“Yeah, there is more work, but Allison would have made sure that she attacked at some point. She was just looking for an opening. Catching me at the gate was what she needed. It doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have found another way. She thinks I am the reason that Hunter doesn’t want her. According to him, he always wanted me. So I don’t think she is seeing things too clearly. I watched him several times tell her that he didn’t want her, but she thinks it’s different. It wasn’t you that drove Allison to this, it was Allison.”
“Still, I never wanted to bring you grief. I really do love you Jasmine. I only want what is best for you. I think at this point I am going to need to accept that you have a family with Hunter now. It’s a bit of a kick to the gut, but I’ll manage.” I can hear the chuckle in his voice, almost like he can’t believe what he is saying.
“Yeah, I am still coming to terms with it myself. If you would have told me last year that I would have been starting a family with Hunter, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. Now, it seems like that was always the way it was supposed to be.”
