Chapter 9: I Don’t Need Your Good Intentions

Lila straightened her back. She knew that Sylvia’s father had saved her life.
That was why Blake had brought Sylvia home, and Lila hadn’t objected. She had even treated Sylvia like a real sister.
But as time passed, she discovered that Sylvia was quietly stealing her brothers away.
That was why her relationship with Sylvia had deteriorated so much.
Max shouted, “Lila, listen to what you’re saying! Are we asking for your life? We’re trying to help you get along with Sylvia! Is that so difficult? How long are you going to keep up this attitude?”
“I’m not being difficult.”
Hearing Max’s words, all the questions that had built up in Lila’s heart simply vanished into thin air.
It felt pointless.
In the past, she had desperately tried to explain herself, but it never made any difference.
Now she didn’t want to let her brothers affect her emotions anymore, as they had in her previous life.
She wouldn’t explain herself, nor would she care about what they thought.
Lila silently gathered her textbooks from the coffee table and packed them into her bag.
Looking at her packed bag, she said quietly, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll go back to my room.”
Max sat on the sofa, appearing troubled and frustrated.
“Lila, if you agree to join the team now, we can overlook everything you’ve done before!”
When Lila heard these words, she found them laughable.
Everything she had done in her previous life had been a joke.
Lila headed upstairs without looking back, her steps remarkably firm.
Max felt irritated and lit a cigarette.
The butler approached. “Mr. Max, if Miss Lila doesn’t want to join, let it be. At least we have Miss Sylvia.”
Max frowned. “It’s not the same.”
“Mr. Max, I have something to say, though I’m not sure if I should. These past few days when you all were away, Miss Lila never once asked about you when she returned. She’s been so cold and distant that it chills even my heart!”
Max extinguished his cigarette and drove away from the mansion.
Upstairs, Lila heard the sound of a car leaving. She watched Max depart, guessing he was probably heading to the training camp.
After showering alone, she reviewed her error correction book once more.
She needed to work hard to leave this place.
Lila accidentally stayed up until dawn. She hurriedly packed her bag and went downstairs, grabbed a sandwich from the dining room, and rushed out.
Max was the first to come downstairs.
He watched Lila’s retreating figure and frowned. “She’s up this early?”
“These past few days, Miss Lila has been taking public transportation herself instead of using our driver. It started Monday when Miss Sylvia was discussing matters with you all and made her late. Since then, Miss Lila has refused to use the car!”
Max’s expression grew complex.
Easton walked over. “Is it really necessary? It was just a near-tardiness. She’s being so petty-who’s she trying to impress?”
Finn yawned. “Max, Lila is just putting on a show to make you feel sorry for her. If you give in this time, she’ll only get worse in the future!”
Max ultimately said nothing more.
He also felt that Lila needed to learn a lesson. He had given her opportunities, but she had failed to appreciate them.
Sylvia overheard the conversation and a flash of satisfaction crossed her eyes. She bounded downstairs cheerfully. “Morning, Max, Easton, Finn! Let’s have breakfast together.”
Seeing Sylvia’s lively and cheerful demeanor, Max’s mood improved considerably.
At least this sister was still pleasant to be around.
At school, Lila felt drowsy after staying up all night.
But during class, she remained attentive, afraid to miss any important points.
In class, the teacher suddenly called on Sylvia to answer a question. Sylvia stammered for a while but couldn’t provide the correct answer.
The teacher sighed. “Sylvia, you’ve been distracted lately. You haven’t mastered the review material, which will put you at a disadvantage during exams.”
Sylvia blushed. “I’m sorry, teacher. It won’t happen again.”
Seeing this, one of her followers quickly spoke up. “Teacher, Lila has been very attentive lately. She must know the answer.”
Everyone turned to look at Lila, most expecting her to embarrass herself.
After all, Lila’s grades were usually worse than Sylvia’s, so she probably wouldn’t know the answer either.
Lila stood up and clearly answered the question.
The teacher was surprised. “Correct answer! Lila has been working very hard lately. Everyone should learn from her and not become complacent.”
Sylvia secretly glanced at Lila, feeling intense hatred. If gaming hadn’t taken up her time, she definitely would have known the answer.
Instead, Lila had stolen the spotlight. How infuriating!
She would have to catch up.
After being praised, Lila’s mood improved considerably.
After school, Lila didn’t go to the infirmary but went straight back to the Landon house.
She needed to be careful to avoid arousing Max’s suspicions.
Sure enough, when she returned, the butler kept watching her, making her uncomfortable.
After dinner, Lila went directly to her room. Once she locked the door, she finally relaxed a bit.
While doing her homework, she took out her phone.
She was debating whether to message Dr. Sean, since she hadn’t gone to see him today.
But he probably wasn’t waiting for her; she was always the one imposing on him.
Should she send a message?
Lila stared at her phone, unsure what to do.
Maybe she’d send one later?
Lila put down her phone and started her homework. Soon her eyelids grew heavy, likely due to staying up all night.
She rested her head on the desk, intending to close her eyes for just a moment, but accidentally fell asleep.
The next morning, Lila was awakened by her alarm clock.
She checked the time-how was it morning already?
Lila packed up her homework and rushed downstairs to school.
At noon, after some hesitation, she went to the infirmary.
Not seeing Dr. Sean, she gathered her courage and asked the doctor inside, “Where’s Dr. Sean?”
“Dr. Sean went to lunch.”
Lila nodded, planning to find him after school.
After school, Lila returned to the infirmary but still didn’t see Dr. Sean. The same doctor from earlier was there.
The doctor looked at her. “Young lady, I’m on duty today. Focus on your studies and don’t think about these things. You’re too young for this.”
Lila’s face turned bright red, but she didn’t explain herself.
For the next few days, she secretly went to the infirmary but never saw Dr. Sean.
She felt somewhat dejected, having grown accustomed to him waiting for her at the infirmary.
Lila realized she had begun to depend on Dr. Sean.
She quickly adjusted her emotions, determined not to rely on others. In this life, she would depend on herself.
She calmed down and focused entirely on preparing for the monthly exam.
She couldn’t lose!
After the exam, Lila felt she had done fairly well.
She should be able to rank in the top hundred.
However, everyone else was complaining about the difficulty of the questions.
She took out her phone and opened her chat with Dr. Sean, but ultimately didn’t know what to say.
They weren’t that close, after all.
Lila couldn’t navigate the relationship properly and frustratedly closed her phone.
In high spirits, Lila packed her bag and returned home. The living room was lively-her brothers had returned instead of going to the training camp.
When she appeared, the room grew noticeably quieter.
It was as if she were the uninvited guest, disrupting the family joy between her brothers and Sylvia.
