Kayden’s POV
I walked into the board room, with the elders of wolves staring at me like I was a new experiment.
“We’ve been waiting for the past two hours Kayden” one of them spoke and I rolled my eyes.
“I’m still the king, until I step down. Till then, you will wait for as long as I want you to” I spoke, forcing him to remain silent.
“I know you all are smiling on the inside.” I scoffed, taking my seat just in the middle.
“Are you sure you want to give up your throne? A king who has been forced to leave the throne, like in your case, is sent on exile. You will be forced to leave the entire werewolf kingdom and venture into the human kingdom from then henceforth. Do you agree?” The eldest read out the rules to me.
“Yes” I nodded, without blinking.
My hands were trembling and my vision was blurry. I never knew there would come a day when I would have to choose between my wealth and pride.
Out of all the sons my father has, I had been the one taking care of the family’s business all these years. I made so many projects that made the werewolf kingdom whatever it is today. And now, they are just throwing me away like I meant nothing to them, like all my efforts were in vain.
“Okay, but this sort of thing is not done in private. We will have to schedule a date, preferably tomorrow. Where the Alpha’s of every pack, and other werewolves of both high and low rankings will witness your exile. Until then, I’ll advise you to prepare your things and your family. Because, the moment you step your foot out of this kingdom, we are not letting you in again. You and your future descendents will be known as outcasts and will never step foot in the werewolf kingdom ever again. Do you understand?” He explained, as the rest of the elders nodded their heads in unison.
“I understand, ” I lowered my head.
I have never felt helpless before. I always had everything under my control and for the first time. I can visibly see things, slipping away from my hand.
“Good, we will pass the information across the various packs..” he was still talking when I heard the doors suddenly burst open. I raised my head to look across the room, as everyone turned in the directions of the entrance door.
Such a thing has never happened before. No one even dared to cross the corners of the board room, because the secrets shared within must remain in the room, until it is decided to be made public. Only someone who didn’t fear death would dare to enter the room, uninvited and unannounced.
“Stop!” Rhea’s voice echoed in the room, a gust of wind blowing through her hair
She stared directly at me. I leaned my head back on the chair, wondering what madness she had prepared to display this time.
Why couldn’t this wife of mine avoid problems?. I didn’t think I would be able to save her life this time.
“How dare you barge in on the elders like that?” The oldest elder slammed his fist against the table as the rest glared at her in awe.
“According to the werewolf law. I am still the Luna of all Lunas, hence I still have a right to this room. And royalty is allowed here anytime, even without an invite” she spoke confidently.
I was thrown between being proud of her confidence, or scared for her life.
The eldest heaved a sigh of relief, realizing that Rhea just quoted the law they themselves had written down, hence they couldn’t do anything to her.
“Rhea..” I got up from my seat to talk to her, but as always she had made a vow never to listen to a word I said.
“No Kayden, what they are doing is not right. You are innocent” she spoke, as she brushed me to the side.
I gasped in shock, wondering where she gathered such audacity. I mean , for her to push me off like that. It takes a lot of courage.
“Three days, all I ask from the elders of wolves is just three days to prove Kayden’s innocence. If I manage to do that then you all will be the ones to step down and a new set of elders would be selected. If I don’t, then Kayden, and I will leave the werewolf kingdom as you have said and we would never return again” Rhea spoke, staring at them one after the other.
“Every criminal is given a chance to prove himself innocent. And if truly Kayden is guilty, then you all shouldn’t be scared” she spoke.
I narrowed my gaze, almost pissed at her actions. Of all the dumb things she had done in the past this has to be the height of things.
“What are you doing Rhea, stop it” I tried to whisper to her, but she played deaf.
“If you don’t give Kayden that chance to prove his innocence, then I will be forced to tell everyone how biased you are. I think society would definitely listen to the cries of a woman” she threatened.
“Fine, you have just three days and after that he would be forced to step down as king” the elders finally agreed, and a smile crawled on her face.
They all had a smirk on their faces, one which showed that they would never allow Rhea to prove me innocent. This was definitely a trap.
I wonder what gave you this confidence Rhea.
“Come with me” I grabbed her by the wrist, dragging her out of the room with me.
“Kayden be careful, you’re hurting me by squeezing my hand like this” she cried out, and I refused to pay attention to her.
“Kayden” she called out to me again, as I dragged her all the way to my room not minding who was watching.
I threw her on the bed, and glanced at her.
The courage she had in her eyes a few minutes ago had suddenly disappeared as the only thing I could see was fear.
