Chapter 49: The Banquet

With Ethan, she accepted his advances.
Now, with him, she couldn’t forget Ethan.
Hehe, what a greedy woman.
Clara entered the lingerie store.
Then… a dazzling array of choices.
She hadn’t visited a lingerie store in years.
She usually bought her lingerie online.
But now, online shopping wouldn’t be fast enough, so she had to choose for herself.
Since entering the store, Clara’s face had been red.
It was perfectly normal for a girl to buy lingerie.
But she felt guilty, thinking about why she was buying it and what she intended to do with it… she couldn’t help but blush.
The sales assistant saw a customer enter and greeted her with a smile, “Hello, can I help you with anything?”
Clara, blushing, whispered, “I’ll just… look around.”
The sales assistant smiled and said, “Alright.”
Then she walked away.
She understood.
In her years as a sales assistant, she’d seen many young girls who were shy when buying lingerie.
Simple, young, and thin-skinned.
That’s how the sales assistant thought of Clara.
Clara looked like she was in her teens or early twenties. Many girls at that age were still very shy and innocent.
This thought persisted until she saw Clara stop in front of a set of red sheer nightwear.
The sales assistant approached, smiling at Clara, “Little sister… do you want this?”
Clara’s face turned even redder, but she nodded lightly.
“Wrap it up for me,” Clara said, blushing.
“Alright,” the sales assistant replied.
She quickly wrapped up the nightwear.
Clara paid, took the bag, and almost ran out of the store.
What a cute little girl.
Even though she bought sexy nightwear, her personality seemed genuinely cute and shy.
Such an adorable and bashful girl must be very likable to her boyfriend.

Clara returned home and immediately went upstairs to hide the nightwear in her closet.
Around four or five in the afternoon, Clara felt a bit thirsty. She went downstairs to get some water and saw June and another woman on the sofa, flipping through fashion magazines and discussing them.
“Clara,” June greeted her.
Clara nodded.
The woman looked up at Clara.
Clara was stunned by her beauty.
The woman was stunningly beautiful.
In this era of widespread internet and television celebrities, it’s hard to be impressed by beauty anymore.
But this woman was breathtaking at first sight.
Even Clara, who saw Ethan’s stunning looks every day, couldn’t help but be amazed.
She was truly beautiful.
Her features were strikingly elegant, yet her demeanor was cool and aloof.
Such a beauty seemed like a celestial being, high above and out of reach.
“Clara, this is Nora Poole,” June introduced.
“Nora, this is Clara, my… sister-in-law,” June said.
Clara glanced at June.
She felt that June hesitated when saying “sister-in-law.”
“Miss Poole, hello.”
“Miss Everett, hello.”
They exchanged brief greetings.
Clara wasn’t good at socializing and felt pressured by Nora’s cold beauty.
“You two continue… I’ll go get something to eat,” Clara said.
June smiled and nodded, “Go ahead, Clara.”
Clara nodded at Nora and left.
Nora watched Clara leave.
She didn’t think much of Clara.
She seemed like an ordinary girl with nothing special about her.
Just like her sister Iris, plain and unremarkable.
No… to be precise, she wasn’t even as good as her sister.
Iris was a mature woman who loved to act coy and had a pitiful charm about her.
But Clara still had baby fat on her face and looked like a little girl.
“Your brother…” Nora looked at June.
June knew what Nora wanted to ask. She sighed inwardly but smiled on the surface, “My brother… seems to like Clara quite a bit.”
Nora was taken aback and looked at June in surprise, momentarily lost in thought.
June didn’t say more and changed the topic back to discussing the magazine with Nora.
Clara found some juice in the kitchen, drank it, and walked back through the living room.
Nora and June were still discussing the magazine.
Seeing Clara, Nora suddenly called out to her.
“Miss Everett.”
“… Hmm?” Clara paused and looked at Nora in confusion.
Why was this beautiful woman calling her?
“Miss Everett,” Nora said with a smile that stunned Clara again.
The beautiful woman was already incredibly stunning. Now that she smiled… it was like flowers blooming in full splendor.
“Tomorrow night, there’s a banquet… not too grand, just a small gathering of friends. Miss Everett, would you be interested?” Nora asked Clara.
Clara was taken aback. Was Nora inviting her to a banquet?
Clara didn’t want to go. She wasn’t familiar with Nora. But… she felt it would be rude to refuse such a beautiful woman in person.
While Clara hesitated, June spoke up, “Clara, let’s go together.”
Clara looked at June, then at Nora. She nodded and smiled, “Alright.”
With June inviting her too, she couldn’t refuse.
June was her sister-in-law… she didn’t want to embarrass June by refusing.
“Then I’ll be expecting you tomorrow night,” Nora said with a smile.
Clara noticed that Nora’s smile seemed cold and didn’t reach her eyes.
And although Nora’s words were perfectly normal… they made Clara feel uneasy.
Back in her room, Clara thought about the banquet tomorrow night.
She was a wealthy heiress and occasionally attended gatherings.
But… since Nora was close to June, her family background must be far superior to hers. So… the so-called small gathering of friends wouldn’t be that simple.
All girls would definitely be competing in beauty and fashion.
Clara felt nervous and worried.
This would be her first appearance in their circle since marrying Ethan.
For her debut… she didn’t seek to amaze; she just wanted to be unremarkable. Not stunning but also not embarrassing herself or Ethan and the Logan family.
If she dressed too plainly, it would be embarrassing.
But she didn’t have any suitable dresses.
Her dresses were still at the Everett family home… actually, thinking about it, they weren’t anything special. Those dresses were quite ordinary and not expensive.
Tomorrow night… for her first appearance…
She couldn’t wear old dresses she’d worn before.
Those socialites loved to compare in such matters.
If she dressed too poorly or casually, she’d be ridiculed.
Clara sighed… after dinner, she’d go out shopping for a nice dress.
After all, Ethan had given her a credit card.
She could use it freely.

When Ethan returned home, he saw Clara engrossed in her phone.
She didn’t even notice he was back.
He walked over.
Finally hearing his footsteps, Clara looked up and blinked when she saw him.
“… You’re back,” Clara said.
Then… she thought about serving him tonight and the sheer nightwear she’d bought…
Her face turned red again.
Ethan looked at Clara; she blushed inexplicably while looking at him.
What did that mean?
Blushing when she saw him?
Had she fallen for him?
“What are you looking at?” Ethan asked.
Clara snapped back to reality and said, “… Looking at dresses.”
She was browsing online for dresses from various brands’ current collections so that if she found one she liked, she could buy it directly from the store tomorrow.
Ethan paused for a moment, “Dresses?”
“Yes,” Clara nodded and said, “A very beautiful cold beauty came to our house today.”
“… Nora?” Ethan asked.
Clara paused. Ethan guessed who it was correctly only based on her description.
Ethan didn’t seem like the type of man who paid attention to such things.
