Chapter 40: Divorce and Property Division

Book:It All Turns Out Great Published:2025-4-9

June had no strong feelings, either positive or negative, towards Iris, Ethan’s ex-fiancee, or Clara now. She believed her brother was the best man in the world, and no woman was good enough for him.
Since her brother was already married, she respected his decision.
Her brother married Clara. Clara was her sister-in-law, and no matter how she felt about Clara, she was willing to treat Clara well for her brother’s sake.
She thought her mother’s behavior was inappropriate.
Now that her brother and Clara were married, even if her mother disliked Clara, it wouldn’t change anything.
From the way her brother and Clara interacted, it was clear that while he might not love Clara, he didn’t dislike her either and was willing to live with her. Her mother’s attitude towards Clara was also making things difficult for her brother.
Over time, this could affect the mother-son relationship.
Moreover, her brother was a cold and distant person. He didn’t have a deep bond with their mother, and now their mother was treating Clara this way…
“What’s wrong with it?” Grace said.
She simply didn’t like Clara.
She hadn’t liked Iris either. If it hadn’t been for Ethan’s insistence, she would never have agreed to let her precious son get engaged to such a woman. In her heart, she always had a preferred choice for her daughter-in-law.
“Clara is still my brother’s wife. Mom, even if it’s for my brother’s sake, you shouldn’t treat Clara like this,” June said.
Grace snorted disdainfully. “She’s your brother’s wife now. Who knows what will happen in the future?”
June sighed. It was useless to say more. Her mother needed to figure it out on her own.
Clara returned to her room, aware that she was being excluded by the Logan family, but she wasn’t upset.
She had never expected the Logan family to accept her. Without expectations, there would be no disappointment or sadness.
She knew very well why she had married into the Logan family and what her future held.
She would leave the Logan family sooner or later.
Clara took a shower and went downstairs. The Logan family members were gone. She ate dinner in the dining room, then returned to her room to play games and read novels before going to bed.
Later, Clara woke up.
It was eleven o’clock at night when someone woke her up.
She opened her eyes to see Ethan undressing her.
Clara blinked. “You’re back.”
She tried to save her nightgown, but Ethan had already taken it off.
“Yes,” Ethan said as he leaned in to kiss her lips.
Clara smelled the strong scent of alcohol.
Later, she succumbed to the alcohol-induced haze.
Ethan went to take a shower.
Clara lay in bed, too tired to move.
Ethan finished his shower and came back to bed, holding Clara as he closed his eyes to sleep.
Clara was exhausted but couldn’t sleep.
She thought about Ethan and herself…
Ethan had said marrying her was a temporary measure.
She understood that at the time, he didn’t want the Logan family to become the subject of gossip.
But now?
The wedding had already taken place.
What were Ethan’s plans now?
Was he going to divorce her?
No… They couldn’t even talk about divorce because they hadn’t registered their marriage yet.
Although they had held a wedding ceremony, it wasn’t legally recognized.
So their relationship wasn’t protected by law. Ethan could kick her out whenever he wanted.
She was willing to leave too.
She didn’t want to stay with the Logan family either.
But some things still needed clarification.
Hearing the steady breathing behind her, Clara turned her head slightly. Ethan was asleep. She sighed in relief and tried to slip out of his embrace, but even in his sleep, Ethan held her tightly. After struggling for a while without success, she gave up, fearing she might wake him up.
Clara stayed quietly in Ethan’s arms and searched on her phone whether cohabitation could result in property division.
Various answers and advertisements from law firms appeared.
Clara read carefully. Some lawyers said it was possible; others said it wasn’t.
The conflicting answers left Clara confused.
So, could it be done or not?
Were these lawyers really professionals?
Why did each one give a different answer?
“What? Planning to take my property?”
Suddenly someone spoke.
Clara was engrossed in reading when she heard this. Startled, she dropped her phone on her nose in shock.
Her nose hurt so much she almost cried.
But Clara couldn’t worry about her nose now; Ethan was more important.
When did he wake up?!
How did he wake up?!
Wasn’t he asleep?!
What should she do now?
What should she do?
Clara felt like she was going crazy.
She thought she might be doomed.
Clara didn’t dare look at or face Ethan, but she had no choice. She awkwardly turned to him with a forced smile and asked, “Why are you awake?”
“I had a nightmare,” Ethan said calmly.
A nightmare?
Impossible.
How could someone as tough as Ethan have nightmares?
“What did you dream about?” Clara asked.
Ethan looked at her and said, “I dreamed someone wanted to take my money. Wouldn’t you call that a nightmare?”
She didn’t want to speak anymore.
She felt so stupid.
How could she be so careless?
How did she not realize Ethan had woken up?
Now it was over.
She had married Ethan under those circumstances. She could say she was there to atone for her sister and the Everett family. But instead of feeling guilty, she was thinking about taking his property.
Ethan must be furious now.
He probably thought he had been so good to her-buying clothes and jewelry for her, giving her a credit card to use freely-and yet she wasn’t grateful and even thought about divorcing him for money.
She was nothing but an ingrate.
“I…” Clara wanted to explain but didn’t know how. Caught red-handed, no explanation would suffice.
Actually… there wasn’t much to explain anyway.
She really had been thinking about it. It wasn’t that she wanted Ethan’s money; she was just curious if she could get any money if they divorced under these circumstances.
It didn’t matter if she got nothing. But if she could get a little money, she’d be happy too.
“Do you want a divorce?” Ethan asked.
Clara hesitated for a moment before shaking her head.
“Do you want my property?” Ethan asked again.
This time Clara shook her head more vigorously.
She wanted it but didn’t dare admit it.
“You won’t get any money,” Ethan said.
“But some lawyers said I could,” Clara replied softly.
“Do lawyers have the final say?” Ethan asked.
Clara looked at him in surprise. Didn’t lawyers have the final say?
“All laws must be applied based on actual circumstances,” Ethan said.
What circumstances?
Ethan continued, “Your sister cheated on me. You married me in her place. I showed mercy by letting your Everett family off the hook, and you still think about taking my property?”
Thinking about it carefully, maybe she was indeed being unreasonable.
“I… I wasn’t thinking that,” Clara whispered.
Ethan snorted. “It’s best if you weren’t thinking about it. Don’t even try; you won’t get anything.”
What did he mean by that?
That she wouldn’t get any of his property?
Sigh…
So it really wasn’t possible after all.
Ethan closed his eyes and went back to sleep after speaking.
Clara stared at him in disbelief as he slept peacefully beside her.
Was that it? Was he really letting her off so easily?
Unbelievable…
Clara couldn’t believe it. She thought she’d be dead meat tonight-that Ethan would punish her severely and then kick her out, followed by relentless revenge on the Everett family…
But he just went back to sleep?
Unbelievable…
Clara kept staring at Ethan in shock until he suddenly opened his eyes again.
Clara jumped in fright and looked at him in terror.
