News of David being taken into police custody was suppressed by Andrew, preventing any public impact. However, high society circles are always well-informed, making it impossible to keep the matter entirely under wraps.
Mr. Jacob specifically called Andrew to inquire about the situation, his tone laced with sarcasm. Andrew offered no explanation, but after hanging up, he instructed Ryan to send evidence of Thomas’s money laundering and bribery to Mr. Jacob, nearly giving the latter a heart attack.
Subsequently, the Clark family also received the news. They was not as easygoing.
Mrs. Clark directly ordered the servants to throw out all of Emily’s belongings, declaring that Stellan should divorce her.
Emily ran back home in tears, immediately throwing herself into Charlotte’s arms upon entering.
“Emily, why are you crying like this? What happened?” Charlotte asked with a sigh.
Recently, with Victoria and David both imprisoned, Charlotte had aged significantly.
“Mom, Stellan wants to divorce me! What should I do?” Emily cried in panic and confusion.
“Why is he suddenly talking about divorce?” Charlotte helped Emily to sit on the sofa, handed her a tissue to wipe her tears, and urged her to speak slowly.
Emily continued crying non-stop, using up most of a tissue pack. “We’ve been married for almost a year, and I haven’t gotten pregnant. Stellan’s mother gives me a hard time, saying I’m a hen that can’t lay eggs.”
“There are plenty of couples who get pregnant after two or three years of marriage. You haven’t even been married a year. What’s the rush? Besides, it’s not like you haven’t been pregnant before. Maybe it’s Stellan who has a problem. Why doesn’t your mother-in-law have him checked at the hospital?” Charlotte said angrily.
Emily bit her lip, her face pale. “Mom, I secretly went to the hospital for a checkup. The doctor said that because I’ve had two miscarriages, my uterine lining is thin, making it difficult to get pregnant.”
“How could this happen? You always took good care of your nutrition after each miscarriage,” Charlotte said, frowning deeply. “Does Stellan know about this?”
“I didn’t dare tell him, but somehow he found out,” Emily said, then burst into tears again.
“So what if he knows? In this day and age, if he wants a virgin, he should go to a kindergarten,” Charlotte sneered.
“Stellan’s mother said some really nasty things. She said the Clark family paid a high price for a second-hand property. A second-hand property where two kids died? That’s incredibly unlucky. She insists that Stellan divorces me,” Emily sobbed, clutching her mother’s arm.
Charlotte, frustrated by her crying, snapped, “Crying, crying, all you do is cry! Crying won’t solve anything! What about Stellan? What does he say?”
“Stellan listens to everything his mother says,” Emily replied, choking on her tears.
Charlotte’s expression twisted into a cold smile. “Blaming you for not being able to have children, the Clark family really found a good excuse. The truth is, they just don’t want to be dragged down now that your father has fallen. Typical businessmen, only caring about their own interests!”
“Mom, what should I do? I don’t want to get divorced,” Emily said, aware that a divorce would leave her with nothing.
She didn’t even have a proper job, so supporting herself would be difficult, let alone maintaining her current luxurious lifestyle.
Charlotte sighed, feeling at a loss. “I have an appointment with your cousin Robert today. Come with me and let’s see if he has any ideas.”
Charlotte changed her clothes and left with Emily.
Emily drove straight to Moonlit Art Inc.
When they arrived, Robert was still in a meeting, and it was the secretary who greeted them.
The secretary politely showed them to a small reception room and served two cups of coffee.
“Mr. Robert is still in a meeting. He specifically asked me to give this to you,” the secretary said, handing a gold card to Charlotte.
Charlotte smiled faintly and naturally put the card into her bag.
This wasn’t the first time she had asked Robert for money. Previously, when she couldn’t manage her finances, she would often “borrow” money from Robert, although she borrowed more and repaid less. After being kicked out of the Harris family, she had no source of income. Most of her savings had been given to Victoria and Emily as dowries, so her current living expenses were entirely funded by Robert, and she felt justified and entitled to do so.
In Charlotte’s eyes, she was like a reborn parent to Robert. If it wasn’t for her financial support, allowing him to study and arranging his entry into Moonlit Art Inc., he might still be washing dishes in their hometown. There was no way he could have become a successful media mogul.
“Mrs. Charlotte, I have work to do. You and Miss Emily…” The secretary smiled politely, her unfinished sentence clearly indicating that she wanted them to leave. Robert had only instructed her to give the money to Charlotte, but now that Charlotte had the money and wasn’t leaving, the secretary felt quite awkward.
“Go ahead with your work. My mother and I will wait here for my uncle. His meeting shouldn’t take too long,” Emily said, still maintaining her entitled attitude in front of the secretary.
“Mr. Robert’s meetings never have a set time. I’m not sure when it will end,” the secretary replied.
“Forget it, asking you is pointless,” Emily grumbled discontentedly and then instructed, “Bring us two more cups of hot coffee. Extra sugar.”
The secretary, helpless, picked up the coffee cups and left. She went to the break room and, while preparing the coffee, complained to another employee, “I heard that Deputy Mayor David has been detained by the police. Yet these two are still strutting around. Mr. Robert is too kind-hearted, and that’s why these shameless relatives keep leeching off him, constantly asking for money.”
“I heard Mr. Robert has already submitted his resignation to the board. Is that true?” the other employee asked.
The secretary nodded. “Yes, it’s true. He’ll be leaving by the end of next quarter at the latest.”
“What will happen to the company after Mr. Robert leaves? Will there be any personnel changes?” the other employee asked worriedly. As lower-level employees, their main concern was job security.
The secretary shook her head.
She then carried the coffee out of the break room and bumped into Robert, who had just come out of the meeting room.
“The documents I asked you to organize yesterday, send them to my email immediately,” Robert instructed.
The secretary hesitated for a moment, holding a cup of coffee in one hand, looking somewhat comical. “Mr. Robert, Mrs. Charlotte is waiting for you in the small reception room.”
“You didn’t give her the card?” Robert asked, frowning.
“I already gave it to her, but she and her daughter insisted on waiting for you,” the secretary explained truthfully.
Robert’s expression showed a hint of impatience. Whenever Charlotte sought him out, it was either for money or to clean up some mess.
“If they want to wait, let them wait,” Robert said, then turned and walked into his office.
He was so busy with his work that he almost forgot about Charlotte and Emily until they barged into his office in a huff.
