I pulled Yvonne away, my mind reeling with confusion. Why was I feeling so disturbed? Why did I feel a surge of anger when Sally hugged Harry? I couldn’t explain it. I refused to call it jealousy-no, that wasn’t it.
Maybe I was just mad because Harry was all over Sally, and she was my stepsister. I would also feel the same if he were being like that with Yvonne. That’s how I should feel, right?
I continued pulling Yvonne away, my grip firm but gentle. When we reached a quiet corner, Yvonne said, “You can let go of me now; nobody’s watching.”
I released her arm and gestured for her to sit down on the staircase. I folded my arms, my eyes narrowing. “Why did you fall down on purpose?” I asked, my voice firm.
Yvonne’s eyes widened, and she looked taken aback. “How did you know?” she stammered.
I took a step closer, my voice firm. “I know everything, Yvonne. I saw everything. You fell down intentionally and blamed Sally. Don’t think I didn’t see it.”
Yvonne bit her lip, her eyes narrowing. “Why did you act like you didn’t believe Sally? You frowned and yelled at her. Why did you pretend?”
I looked away, my expression neutral. “I had to. I just had to. Besides, it’s only right if I acted that way towards her and you.”
I didn’t want to reveal my true feelings, not even to Yvonne. What the fuck was wrong with me?!
Yvonne stood up, her eyes suddenly flashing with determination. She walked up to me, her voice low. “Have you been doing your job lately?”
I raised an eyebrow, playing dumb. “What’s that?”
Yvonne’s smile was sly. “Seducing her, of course. You’ll ruin her, just as you promised.”
“I know,” I sighed, nodding my head. “Just give me more time. She’s a virgin, and you know that. Fuck! You don’t know how hard it is, Yvonne. She’s really hard… I’m telling you, I tried, but it was difficult. But don’t worry, I will get to her.”
I watched as Yvonne turned to leave, a sense of unease growing in my stomach. I called out to her, my voice low. “Yvonne, wait.”
She turned back, her eyes questioning.
“Please, don’t go to the bathroom,” I said, my voice firm. “Just… don’t. You don’t need to bring it back up.”
Yvonne’s expression twisted, and she let out a mocking scoff before turning and walking away, vanishing from my sight.
As I stood there, I pulled down my long socks and pulled out a vape, taking a long drag. The nicotine rush helped calm my nerves. Just then, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
It was Harry. I turned to see him sitting with Sally on the other side of the field. What the fuck were they doing here? And alone for that matter?
“Are you okay?” he asked.
She nodded, and Harry said, “Show me where you grazed your knee. The fall was harsh, and I think I saw blood somewhere there.”
Sally pointed to her knee, and Harry sighed deeply.
“Can you wait here? I’ll go grab the first aid kit. I promise it’s not far, just in the field.”
Sally nodded again, and Harry smiled before rushing off.
He returned quickly, as promised, and began tending to Sally’s wound. He applied some antiseptic wipes and covered the graze with a Band-Aid. “There you go,” he said with a smile.
Sally typed something on her phone and showed it to Harry. I’d have to squint my eyes to see the way he mouthed, “Thanks.”
Then, he replied with an annoying, bright smile on his face, “My pleasure.”
The next thing was Harry looking down, his face flushing with shyness. I watched him, irritation etched on my face. This wasn’t the Harry I knew-the bold, talkative guy who never shut up. Seeing him like this, so nervous and shy, made me feel uneasy.
“Motherfucker,” I scoffed, taking a long drag.
I continued to observe them, listening in on their conversation without drawing attention to myself. Then, he turned to Sally and said, “Sally?” with the most soft and sweetest voice that I’d never heard him say before.
“Fuck! What’s with that dude?” I scowled, almost puking on the floor.
Sally just cocked her head, curious about what Harry wanted.
Harry’s eyes locked onto hers, his voice slow and deliberate. “Can you go out on a date with me?”
Sally’s eyes widened, but she didn’t respond. Harry continued, “If we win tomorrow, please go on a date with me.”
A smile soon spread across Sally’s face, and she covered her smiling lips, looking all shy. I noticed a faint red hue on her cheeks, and my anger simmered. Was she blushing? Wait! Why was I getting so mad?
“If I win the football game the day after tomorrow, go out with me, Sally. Please!” He begged, his eyes looking so pure and… adorable? Yuck!
I watched as Sally wrote something on her phone and showed it to Harry. He read it out loud, “What if you lose the game?”
Harry touched his jaw, looking up at the sky. “Well, I didn’t think about that. But if I lose, hmm, how about you ask me on a date, Sally?” He smiled, and Sally couldn’t help but laugh, making soft, muted sounds.
Harry’s eyes lit up. “Your laugh is beautiful,”
“Thank you.” Sally signed.
However, that dumb ass named Harry looked more puzzled than the question mark itself. She wrote it down and showed it to him again.
“You’re welcome,” he said.
They sat together, looking shy and awkward. Before long, Harry reached out and took Sally’s hand, his slightly larger hand enveloping hers. He gave it a gentle squeeze. Sally’s heart seemed to skip a beat as she turned to him.
My gut twisted with unease as I watched. Harry leaned forward, his lips meeting Sally’s in a soft, gentle kiss, and then the vape fell out of my hand, causing them to break the kiss and turn their heads.
