I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing on the nightstand. I reached over to grab it, and a smile spread across my face as I saw Gamer Frozen’s name on the screen. He had messaged me, saying he wanted to meet up and talk.
My heart skipped a beat as I read his words. I had been wanting to see him too, to thank him for his help during the tournament, and to reconnect with the guy who had listened to my deepest secrets.
I got out of bed, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation. As I got ready, I glanced over at Yvonne, who was lying on her bed, watching a movie. “Hey,” I called out to her, and she looked up at me with narrowed eyes.
“Where are you heading to, dressed like that?” she asked, eyeing my outfit.
“I’m going to meet a friend,” I replied, trying to sound casual. “And what about you? Don’t you want to go to cheerleading practice?”
“Not today,” she replied, shaking her head and then turning her attention back to the movie.
I nodded and headed out the door. Heaven knows I couldn’t wait to see the game changer behind the screen and talk to him about everything that had been going on.
As I walked out of the dorm, the cool morning air hit me, and I took a deep breath, feeling invigorated. I made my way to the coffee shop where he and I had agreed to meet, my heart beating with anticipation. What would he say? What would he tell me? I couldn’t wait to find out.
“Hey!” I heard Yvonne’s voice from behind me.
I halted in my tracks as I heard that familiar voice scream from behind me. When I turned around, I saw her walking towards me with a smile. My eyes narrowed, surprised by her sudden appearance.
“What are you doing here, Yvonne?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
“You forgot something!” she exclaimed.
I raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?” I asked, pocketing my hands.
She pointed to her cheek, clearly expecting a kiss. I let out a soft sigh, walked over, and gave her a peck on the cheek. She turned to the other cheek, pointing to it, and I obliged with another kiss.
Just as I was about to pull away, she held my face and kissed me deeply, taking my lips with full force into her mouth. I kissed her back, and when we broke apart, she waved at me, and I waved back before she scurried back into the dorm building.
As I walked away, I sighed deeply, wondering what I had gotten myself into. Dating Yvonne while still having feelings for my step-sister, Allison, was complicated. I felt uncomfortable even kissing my own girlfriend. But I pushed the thought aside, reminding myself that everything with Allison was going to end, and I would focus on my relationship with Yvonne. It wasn’t like I loved Yvonne, but I had no choice.
I hailed a taxi and headed to the restaurant where Frozen Gamer was waiting for me. He had sent me a picture of the restaurant via the gaming messaging platform, and thankfully, it wasn’t too far away. Who would have believed that he was still close by?
As I stepped out of the taxi, I asked him, “What clothes are you wearing?”
“I’m wearing a white top with a red striped jacket over it,” he replied. “I’m sitting down, facing the counter, not far from the door.”
I nodded, took a deep breath, and pushed open the door. As I entered the restaurant, I scanned the room, looking for him. My eyes landed on a person wearing a red jacket, sitting with their back to me, facing the counter. He was also wearing a blue baseball cap. I smiled, thinking I had found him.
I sent him another text: “Tell me, are you wearing a cap?”
He replied with a smiling emoji, “Yes.”
He added soon after, “I’m also wearing white sneakers.”
I looked at the person’s feet and saw the white sneakers. I was assured it was him. I texted him back, “I’ve seen you. I’m coming over right now.”
Just as I was about to approach him, the person turned around, and our eyes met. My mouth dropped in shock. What the fucking hell?!
The person’s eyes widened in surprise, and he looked like he had seen a ghost. I was taken aback by him completely. What was going on? How was this possible?
For a minute, we stood there, frozen in time. Colby’s eyes narrowed, his brows furrowed, and he asked, “What are you doing here?”
I was thinking, Should I lie or should I leave? Colby knew too much about me already though! I swallowed hard and said, “What does that mean? Why do you think people go into a restaurant? I obviously want to eat something.”
I noticed his annoying looking eyes sparkled with amusement. “Are you Gamer Pavil…?” he started to ask, but I cut him off, my heart racing.
“Shut it,” I growled.
However, he repeated his question, his voice low and deep. “Are you the one… the person I helped with the gaming tournament? The person who told me he was in love with his step-sister?”
My eyes widened in horror. He really knew everything about me, huh? My life couldn’t get worse? So, who’s next? Yvonne! Oh yeah, and I’m supposed to send Victor some money tomorrow so that he can keep up as he promised.
“Shut up!” I yelled, my face burning with anger and embarrassment. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
He let out a chuckle which sounded like mockery to my ears. “Wow, this has got to be a joke,” he said, shaking his head. “Right? You… were joking when you said that to me, right? I mean you’re fucking dating my sister!”
Panting, I charged at him without a second thought, delivering a sharp punch to his face. His lip split open, blood splattering out.
“Didn’t I fucking tell you to shut up?!” I yelled, ignoring the curious stares and the possibility of getting kicked out before we even had a chance to begin.
