Jayden
I felt disappointed and unhappy when Allison didn’t answer my call. I tried calling her again, but her line was switched off.
“Why is she not picking up?” I wondered, worriedly.
I wanted to tell her that I was heading back home and feeling sad about it. We wouldn’t be able to talk or see each other for some time.
I decided to send her a message instead: “I went back home, baby. See you later. I’ll be back within a few days.”
As I sat at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to arrive, I felt down. Even a little baby would be able to see this lad wasn’t feeling too good.
“God,” I groaned, my hand running through my hair.
Soon, the bus finally came, I got my ticket, boarded, looked out the window, and soon the bus started moving. As it moved, I watched the scenery pass by and let out a deep sigh.
I checked my phone, reminding myself of the text I got from my biological mother that morning. She had claimed she was sick and wanted to see me.
I was torn – I was going back to the woman who had told me to leave her life, someone I had promised myself I would never see again. But despite everything, she was still my mother. I had no choice but to run to her when she was calling for me even though I knew she doesn’t deserve me or my help. Was I this gullible?
The drive on the bus continued and soon I got lost in thought, until I finally arrived home. From the bus stop, I took a taxi to the home.
When I entered, I met Sally, who looked at me with a mixture of surprise and curiosity.
“What are you doing here? Did my sister call you here?” she asked, signing slowly.
I was taken aback by her question and replied in sign language, “What do you mean? Am I not allowed in my father’s house?”
Sally’s expression suddenly darkened, and she signed fiercely, “I want to tell you to stay away from my sister, do you understand me?”
With that, she spun around and left. I was surprised, wondering what had triggered her outburst and sudden change of character? And why the hell would she tell me to stay away from Allison as if she knew something was going on between us.
“I hope not,” I prayed, tugging my bag properly against my shoulder.
As I headed upstairs, I ran into Allison, who looked startled. Her eyes darted around before she grabbed my hand and pulled me into her bedroom.
“Allison?” I called, a surprised expression on my face as I scrutinized her from head to toe. “What are you doing here?”
“I should be asking you that,” she retorted, her eyes widening in surprise. “What are you doing here? Did mother call you too? How did you know I was here? Did you probably ask Sally or something? Tell me, did you see Sally on your way? What did she tell you? What’s with the bag? Why are ”
“Allison, calm down!” I shouted as I couldn’t understand why she was being this anxious. “Just calm down and stop panicking. Everything is fine, I promise.”
She sighed deeply, nodding her head.
“Firstly, let’s answer some of the questions,” I began, exhaling loudly. “Honestly, I didn’t even know you were here. I actually came because…” I trailed off, hesitant to reveal my true reason for returning.
Allison’s eyes narrowed. “Because of what? Why did you come here, Jayden?”
I hesitated before replying, “I have something important to take care of.”
“Okay then,” she sighed, sitting down on the bed. “If you aren’t going to tell me, fine.”
“Hmm, but is everything okay though?” I asked trying to divert from the discussion. “You don’t really look good.”
“No, everything is not okay,” Allison replied, shaking her head. “Goodness, Jayden, you shouldn’t have called me earlier. You almost put me in trouble.”
My eyes widened in concern, and I came closer to her. “What do you mean? I thought as much! When I called, you didn’t answer which was unexpected. So, tell me, what happened?”
“Sally saw the call, and she was really mad at me. I had to explain that you were just calling to ask me a simple question. I couldn’t even answer the call in front of her.” She explained.
“Why?” I asked, a frown appearing on my face. “Why does Sally think calling you is wrong? I didn’t do anything wrong, did I?”
I remembered how she had acted earlier and I gulped heavily, hoping it was not what I was thinking.
“You don’t know this, but Sally actually knows about us.” She said, a serious look on her face.
I was too stunned to speak so I simply stared at her, the silence filling the whole room.
“Won’t you say anything?” She suddenly screamed as if trying to pull me out of my deep reverie. “Jayden, I fucking said Sally knows about us.”
“So, what the hell does she know about us?” I asked, my voice shaking with anxiety. “What does she know is happening between us?”
Her eyes flashed with anger. “What do you mean? Are you trying to act oblivious right now?” she snapped. “Isn’t it obvious what I’m talking about? She found out about our affair. She even saw us having sex the other day at the hospital. What are we going to do?”
I took a deep breath. “We should tell her it was a mistake. That’s what we should say. We aren’t in any affair or has she forgotten I’m in a sincere relationship with my girlfriend, Yvonne?”
My words hung in the air, and I could sense her skepticism.
“You can’t be serious,” she said, looking at me incredulously.
“You heard me?” I replied. “That day was a mistake, and that is what she should keep at the back of her mind, anyways. And doesn’t she know that you’re actually dating me?”
“I can’t believe this,” she scoffed, shaking her head as if in awe.
I stood up and bent over, our faces a few inches apart. “Come on, baby, we should use common sense while doing all these. Why make things complicated?”
But her expression remained serious, and I couldn’t help but wonder what could be in that mind of hers.
