CHAPTER 1
David and Mike had been friends for years, meeting back in their freshman year at College, when they were forced into the same dormitory room. They barely spoke for weeks, with David looking at Mike as some alienated geek, who seemed to have a greater interest in Math than in getting laid. They simply had nothing in common.
David, on the other hand was a star athlete, and Captain of the football team. He was sought after as one of the mos promising players in a long line of All-American boys with the potential to go pro.
Both students and professors idolized him, and there was nothing that he could do wrong. He was simply too valuable. In the event that he did break a rule, it was a given that they’d simply turn the other cheek and pretend not to have noticed.
But being a star football player has other perks than just media attention and raving fans. David could also fuck just abou any girl he desired, and he did so, almost every night.
“Mind going for a walk?” he’d say, grinning at Mike with the usual nod. Mike, knowing the routine, would grab his backpack and head out, squatting on a bench, returning to his studies while David fucked the bleached blonde bimbo.
Mike really didn’t care. After all, David only ever needed thirty minutes, anyway.
Mike spent most of his days with his head down, absorbed in a book, or programming some complicated code into the computer, and to the onlooker, it would appear as though he really had no interest in women. Secretly, however, Mike desperately wished that he had David’s Midas touch when it came to the opposite sex.
The problem was, Mike couldn’t even close to getting lucky. He struggled to even make contact, and when he finall mustered up the balls to strike up a conversation with a girl in the dorm, his awkward conversation starters usually led to impending dead silence and embarrassingly public strikeouts.
In fact, since he started College, he’d only ever hooked up once and that was to Betty Mae, a volunteer librarian. Not exactly what he considered “prime pussy.”
David, sympathetic to his roommate’s plight, eventually started inviting Mike along to parties, and every once in a while Mike would get lucky, with one of David’s sloppy seconds. No complaints. He’d take what he could get.
Now, twenty years later, the odd pair still remained friends, although they’d often go months without seeing one another. They lived very different lives these days, and with such incredible distance between them, it wasn’t always easy to find time to get together.
David having never gone pro was now busy coaching full time, and lived in Vermont with his wife and daughter.
Mike, a successful architect, lived out of New York.
Things had certainly changed for them, and in many ways it was like they switched lives, with Mike having the time of his life living as a bachelor with unlimited funds and pussy, and David, licking his wounds back in Vermont, still bitter about having never been drafted.
Father Time is sure one hell of a wicked bitch.
“Yeah, can’t wait to see you buddy,” David smiled into the phone. “I’ll pick you up at the airport. No need to take a car out here. Why would you do that?”
“Ahh, don’t worry about it. I have a driver,” Mike replied. “It’s all taken care of. Really. Just relax, I’ll be there in a couple of hours.”
David shook his head, silently mouthing the words, “Fuck Sakes”, before hanging up the phone. Growling to himself, he popped open a cold beer and slunk into the sofa in the living room.
“What’s wrong?” his wife Vanessa asked, sensing her husband’s frustration. She walked over to her husband and sat down beside him. “I thought you’d be excited about seeing Mike?”
“Oh, I am,” David sulked. “I just hate him rubbing his money and success in my face.”
Vanessa sighed. “Here we go again…”
David understood his wife’s annoyance. She had heard the same spiel many times before, and he knew it only upset her.
It wasn’t like he wasn’t happy. He had a great family, a loving wife and a fantastic daughter. It’s just that it was such a hard pill to swallow, seeing the geek from College doing so well, when David’s dreams had been snuffed out long ago. He reached over and affectionately squeezed his wife’s leg.
“I’m okay, baby. Just every time I see him I think about the old days. Back then, things were a hell of a lot different.”
Vanessa shook her head in exasperation. She understood just how worked up David got whenever Mike came around. Sh knew the routine; She would console him, tell him what a wonderful husband and father he was, build him up and simply wait out the storm. Eventually, David would shake off this somber mood and realize that he had it pretty good. Even if he wasn’ raking in the big bucks, or flashing his smile across the television screen as millions of viewers watched him score a touch down.
Vanessa squeezed her husband’s arm tenderly and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek.
“You two will have a great time. By the way, I have some good news to share with you.”
“Oh, yeah?” David replied, still reminiscing about the days of old, and only half paying attention to his wife. “What’s up?” “Cassie called this morning. She is coming home today!”
“Oh, really?” David’s face filled with excitement. He hadn’t seen his daughter in months. Ever since she went away to College, she rarely had time to fly home.
“That’s awesome, baby! How long is she home for?”
Vanessa beamed. “She’s here for the weekend.
i guess she had some free time and thought she’d come home and see us. Her plane will be landing in about an hour.”
David was thrilled. He certainly had missed his little girl, and with Mike arriving shortly, it would make for a fantastic weekend ahead.
***
David was in the shower when the first of his visitor’s arrived.
“Hey, anyone home?” the voice shouted from the front door welcome mat. David ducked his head out of the shower, and yelled down to his friend.
“I’ll be right down, Mike!”
Mike was all smiles as David bolted down the stairs to greet him.
“Well, hey buddy!” he grinned as his friend reached out to embrace him.
Mike had certainly bulked up since David saw him last.
“Damn, dude. You been working out?”
Mike chuckled, flexing his biceps. “Yeah, a little.”
His blue eyes twinkled at his friend, who was clearly surprised at Mike’s transformation. He had been hitting the gym hard these days, and while he had just turned forty-four, he didn’t look a day past thirty.
“How have you been?” Mike asked, feeling a little awkward. He knew David had a fragile ego and he felt obligated to shift the topic over to him.
“How’s the family?”
“Everyone’s doing really well.” David replied. “Callie is coming for the weekend. She should be here any minute. Wife’s gone to pick her up from the airport now.”
Mike’s eyes lit up. He hadn’t seen Callie in over a year, and he was looking forward to seeing her again.
Callie was certainly a beauty, who could light up the room without even trying. With long blonde hair that was cut at shoulder length and the deepest blue eyes he had ever seen, she was absolutely stunning.
“Well, that’s awesome!” Mike smiled, taking off his long, black coat. “Have somewhere I can put this?”
David nodded, taking the coat from his friend.
“Hey, where’s your luggage?” David asked.
“Oh, I had my driver bring it by the hotel.” Mike replied, following David as he walked to the front closet and hung Mike’ coat up on a rack.
David swung around, glaring at Mike.
“Why? My house not good enough for you?”
Mike balked. “Huh? No, No. David, come on, it’s nothing like that. I just thought it would be more convenient.”
David shook his head in frustration, his shoulders rising and falling in deep breaths.
“Fine, whatever you want.” he replied, leading Mike into the front room. “You want a drink?”
“Sure, that’d be great.”
David disappeared into the kitchen and Mike settled into the black leather sofa. It had been a long flight, and he was glad to finally be here. It had been too long since he last saw his friend, but as David angrily clanged bottles in the kitchen, Mike was reminded as to why he appreciated the distance between them.
David was far too sensitive about how well Mike was doing, and Mike found himself always struggling not to say the wrong thing. David returned with two beers, and handed one to Mike. “So, you want to go golfing in the morning?” he asked, finally relaxing next to his friend.
“Yeah, that sounds great,” Mike replied. “But go easy on me. It’s been awhile since I’ve played.”
David chuckled. Mike might be a successful architect but when it came to athletics, he couldn’t hold a candle to David. “Sure, I’ll go easy on you,” he replied, doing his best to hide his excitement.
The two friends continued talking about everything that had happened over the last year. Mike explained how he was being
offered a higher position in his company while David tried hard to produce his own offerings of accomplishments, with little to say.
Before long, they heard the sounds of a car pulling into the drive, and before David could make his way to the front door, his daughter came bustling in, her eyes wide with excitement. She threw her arms around David and snuggled against his chest.
“Dad! I’ve missed you so much!”
