CHAPTER 1
“It didn’t hurt nearly as much as I thought it would,” Rachel breathed into the phone. “I figured it would hurt like hell and I’d end up regretting it.” “It didn’t hurt nearly as much as I thought it would,” Rachel breathed into the phone. “I figured it would hurt like hell and I’d end up regretting it.”
Rachel giggled and pulled the phone closer to her mouth, muffling her whispers. “In fact, it actually felt really good after the first few minutes and I didn’t want him to stop but he didn’t last very long.”
The girl on the other end of the line went quiet. Lily had been thinking about sex nearly every day lately, but she was terrified that she wouldn’t know what to do when the time came for her to lose her virginity.
Lily thought for a minute about whether she dared ask her best friend more about her sexual conquest last night, but decided against it.
“Lily?” “I’m here, Rach”, Lily replied, unsure of what to say. “I know you haven’t done it yet, Lil, but when you do you are going to absolutely love it, I promise.” Rachel replied.
Lily felt awkward, and for the first time since they were kids she felt disconnected from her friend. Rachel was no longer a virgin yet Lily hadn’t even had her first kiss. She wasn’t sure whether Rachel was going to even want to hang out with her anymore, especially since she had started going out with a faster, more experienced crowd.
“I’m so happy for you, Rachel,” Lily replied, ignoring her friend’s reminder about her virginity. “I really am.”
Rachel sensed that Lily was uncomfortable and tried to change the subject, but after a few minutes they hung up, making plans to meet on the weekend.
Lily sat in stunned silence as she thought about the conversation she just had with Rachel. They had been best friends since they were only five years old, sharing everything together.
From secrets, to their hopes and desires for the future, there was little that they hadn’t discussed. But lately, things were changing between them and Lily felt the distance growing between them.
“All because she had sex before me,” she thought, frowning in frustration. “She thinks she’s oh, so experienced now that she screwed David last night.”
Lily flopped on her bed, running her hands over the soft pink, frilly comforter. She grabbed a pillow and pushed it over her face.
“Argh!” she growled, not caring who heard her groans of frustration. She kicked her feet into the footboard of her bed, and rolled onto her back, staring up at the ceiling in anger.
“What the hell is going on in here?”
Lily twisted her head so that her neck stuck out at the ceiling and her head hung off the bed. She peered over to the open door. Her stepfather stood in the doorway, his hands held out, palms up in mock questioning. “What’s wrong, Lily?” he asked, smiling.
Lily blushed. What a time for questions, she thought.
“Nothing, Dad,” Lily replied, sitting up on her bed.
“Are you sure?” her stepfather asked, walking into the room.
“Okay, then. If you ever need to talk, I’m here.”
“Yeah, it’s okay,” she grinned. “Thanks, though.”
Her stepfather Doug nodded with a quick smile and walked out of Lily’s bedroom, closing the door behind him.
Lily thought about how nice her stepfather was, and how she was so sure that he’d be a dick to her the way her last stepfather was. Her mother, Karen sure knew how to choose them.
Karen had been married twice before, and both times ended in complete disaster. The guys were rude to Lily, feeling as though she was nothing more than a burden that they were forced to deal with simply because they wanted to be with her mother. She was thrilled that Doug was so accepting, and never tried to take the place of her father.
Lily smiled to herself, as her mind wandered to a place it had gone before many times over the last two months since Doug became part of her life.
Doug was a good-looking man, with the kind of muscular brawn that caught the attention of many women.
With his chiseled face and 5 o’clock shadow, he had a rugged look of a cowboy, and Lily thought her mother sure got lucky this time.
Lily got up from her bed and walked over to her wooden desk, slowly opening the small drawer that was nestled just underneath the rim of the flat surface. It was a secret drawer that could only be felt, not seen, and as she slid it open, she quickly scanned the door to make sure it was still shut tightly behind her.
She pulled her diary out of its secret place and sat down to write today’s entry.
“Dear Diary,” she began, her handwriting floating in round circular shapes. “I talked to Rachel today and it seems as though her world is changing forever. Her and David finally had sex last night and now she is on top of the world.
I must admit I am slightly jealous but also quite angry. I always thought we’d both have boyfriends together and that when she lost her virginity, I’d lose mine. I guess that was stupid of me.”
Lily second-guessed her entry, not wanting to even confess her feelings to herself. She twisted the pencil in an attempt to erase it but the pink eraser was worn down to the metal tip. She sighed.
“I guess we’re growing apart,” she continued, writing faster as the thoughts poured out onto the light pink diary page. “Nothing will ever be the same again. I guess I should have seen it coming.”
She continued.
“I can’t stop thinking about my new daddy Doug even though I know it’s wrong,” she wrote, her scribbles getting smaller as if to hide her secret thoughts.
“Every time I think about sex, I think about him,” she wrote. “He’s so good looking, and I bet he’s a great kisser.
My mom would kill me if she knew what I was thinking whenever I saw him. I wish I didn’t think that way of him. He’s legally my Daddy! What the hell is wrong with me?” Lily paused, leaning back on her small leather chair; she twisted from side to side in a rocking motion.
She looked out through her window as the sun shone brightly through the windowpane. Lily suddenly heard the front door close hard and loud, and she left her desk to get a better look.
Doug was walking out to his black Mercedes, and Lily heard it chirp as he unlocked the car. Doug walked around to the trunk, opened it wide and threw a dark blue duffel bag inside.
As he walked back around to the driver’s side door, Lily caught a glimmer of sadness in his eyes. Doug looked miserable.
“What the hell did my mother do now?” Lily thought, grabbing her diary from the table and shoving it into its drawer. She raced to her bedroom door and flung it open, heading for the driveway in hopes of catching Doug before he was gone. She made it just in time.
“Doug? What’s wrong?” Lily asked, tapping on the driver’s side window.
Doug pressed the automatic switch and lowered the window halfway down.
“It’s okay, Lily. You’re mother and I are just having a little argument. It’s nothing to worry about. You should go back inside.”
Doug turned away from Lily, staring straight through the front window, not wanting to look her in the eye. Lily knew something wasn’t right, and it seemed to be a lot more than a little fight.
“What is going on with my mother now?” she asked, knowing that her mother had a tendency to overreact to every little thing imaginable. Lily was sure that she lived for the drama of a good fight.
“Lily, really, you don’t have to worry about it. I just need some time away from things.” Doug placed his hand on the gearshift, ready to switch it into reverse.
“Wait Doug,” Lily replied, feeling panic rising in her chest. She wasn’t sure why she cared so much that Doug was leaving but all she knew was that if there was anything she could do to make him stay, she was up for it.
“Can I come for a ride with you?” Lily asked, with a sudden burst of courage. She surprised even herself. “Just for a little ride so we can talk.”
Doug blinked, looking down at his lap. It was obvious that he wasn’t sure of what to do, but he sensed that Lily wasn’t going to let him just drive off.
“I guess so,” he said, still unsure as to whether this was a good idea.
“Get in.” Doug unlocked the passenger side door, and waited for Lily to walk over to the other side of the car. She opened the door and slid in, her short black and red plaid skirt rustling against the leather seat.
Doug backed the car out of the driveway, and slammed it into Drive. The car roared down the street, and Lily laughed at the powerful vibrations.
“This is one hell of a car!” Lily exclaimed, her giggles filling the air.
Doug chuckled, and looked over at Lily. “It’s got some power,” he said, grinning. The car whizzed around corners, and Lily grabbed the hand strap that was buckled into the roof above her. Doug was a maniac, but she loved every minute of it. Her heart pounded in her chest and she laughed harder than she had in years.
They drove for a couple of miles before either of them said a word. Lily was too caught up in the adrenaline-fueled race around curves and corners, and Doug was deep in thought. Something was obviously on his mind.
Lily was the first to speak.
“Doug, you don’t have to tell me but is everything okay?” she asked, looking out the passenger side window. She didn’t want to make him feel awkward, but she was concerned about him.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” he replied quietly. “I just don’t think your mother and I are going to work out.”
Lily felt a lump growing in her throat, as she choked back tears. Why did she care this much about who her mother married? After all, it had been the fourth marriage and even though Doug was much nicer than the others, Lily knew that the odds of her mother staying married to one man for long was slim to none.
“What happened?” she asked, in a voice barely above a whisper. Doug sighed, turning off the music.
“Your mother is seeing someone else,” he explained, the hurt seething through his voice. “I caught her screwing around on me, and I mean, it’s only been a few months since we married.”
Doug’s hands gripped the steering wheel and the pain in his voice was quickly replaced with anger. “I should have seen this coming. I’m what, number four?” he asked, and then quickly regretted it, worried that he upset Lily.
“I’m sorry Lily.” “Don’t be sorry,” Lily replied. She bit her lip in frustration, shaking her head. Wow, my mother is a complete idiot, she thought.
