CHAPTER 1
Morgan and Megan came into my life three years ago, when I married their mother in a shotgun style wedding. They were the sweetest of twin girls, and they welcomed me into the family, despite their father still being a big part of their lives.
I worked a full time job as an engineer and my wife worked as a nurse at the local hospital. The twins lived together in a high-rise condo in the city, while my wife and I owned a three story split level home in a quiet neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle.
One night when my wife was driving home from a late night shift at the local hospital, she was rear ended by a drunk driver. When the police showed up on my doorstep, their faces grave with the news of my wife’s death, I fell to my knees, my life suddenly changing forever. She was my best friend and soul mate, and I lost everything in one fell swoop.
After my wife’s death, the twins rarely came around to visit. They were both working models who had little time to spend with a step father that they barely knew, so when they both showed up on my doorstep one fall afternoon, I was surprised, yet happy, to see them.
“Hey, girls. It’s been a long time,” I replied, greeting them with a bright smile.
They looked amazing, their long blonde hair hanging loosely on their shoulders. The sunlight caught the speckles of yellow in their hair, forming light golden circles above their heads. They looked like angels.
“Too long,” Morgan replied, shooting me a warm smile. “We’ve just been really busy, that’s all.”
“No worries,” I replied, wanting to make them feel welcome, without having to explain their absence from my life. After all, their father was still active in their lives, and I was just a backseat Daddy.
The girls followed me through the foyer and into the living room, where we sat on the soft leather sofa, me in the middle with one girl on each side.
“How have you been?” Megan asked me, her face filled with concern. “Everything going okay?”
I nodded my head, trying to hide my grief.
“Everything’s just fine. How are things with you, two?”
Morgan’s deep blue eyes shifted uneasily, as she analyzed my face for signs of the truth. She could see my sorrow, that much I was sure of, but she said nothing. Instead, she waited for Megan to break the silence.
“Everything’s great,” Megan replied, looking deep into my eyes. The girls were breathtaking, and I couldn’t help but miss their Mother terribly whenever I saw them. They looked so much like their Mother that I forced myself to tear my gaze away, for fear that I wouldn’t be able to control my grief from showing. was still very much in love with my wife, and even though she had now been gone for almost two years, not a day went by where I didn’t miss her terribly.
Morgan shifted nervously on the sofa, reaching forward to pluck a candy from the dish. I appreciated the girls dropping by, but I couldn’t help but feel as though they did so only by a sense of obligation. Perhaps they felt they needed to check in on me, as their Mother would have wanted.
“Have you been keeping yourself busy?” Morgan asked, sliding the red and white striped candy into her mouth. Her lusciou pink lips sucked the edge of the candy, before crunching the mint between her teeth.
“Yeah,” I replied, doing my best to lighten the mood. “I’ve been playing golf with some old friends, going out for drinks and you know, working hard as always.”
Megan nodded unconvincingly. It was as if she could read my mind, sensing my sorrow and wanting to comfort me, but unsure what to do.
She leaned over and leaned her arm on my shoulder, snuggling against my side. I crooked my head towards her and gave her a flashy smile. The girls were such a vivid reminder of the life I had with thei Mother that I could barely find the words to keep the conversation flowing between us.
Morgan twisted her small body on the sofa, and sucked in her breath, her eyes shifting around the room, as if she were trying to remember lines from a play. I sensed that the twins had rehearsed what they’d say, and as soon as Morgan spoke, I knew I was right.
“So, we were thinking that maybe we could all go out to dinner this weekend. What do you think?”
I looked from Morgan to Megan, trying to catch their secret glances as I struggled with a response. I didn’t want to forc them into being part of my life, yet I did enjoy their company. “Sure,” I responded hesitantly. “Sounds good to me.
How about Friday night?” The girls nodded in unison as Megan’s hand slowly slid from my shoulder, to my arm. “Perfect,” she replied, in a voice barely above a whisper. She squeezed my arm tightly, looking thoughtful and serious. Hereyelids fluttered as she sucked in her breath, her face pleading with her sister for help.
Morgan caught her glance, and slowly stood up from the sofa, picking up her small purse and wrapping the strap over her shoulder.
“Well, great! We’ll meet you on Friday then!”
I smiled up at her, and she beamed back at me. She was so beautiful that she took my breath away.
Megan followed her lead, rising from the sofa.
“Well, we have to get going,” she said, moving over to where her sister stood.
“So, Friday it is.” I stood up to join them, and they circled around me, enveloping me in their arms. I breathed them in, their sweet scent lingering in the air. Megan leaned her head on my shoulder as Morgan squeezed my arm tightly, and affectionately ran her thin fingers down my back.
“Take care of yourself,” Morgan whispered, kissing me lightly on the cheek. Her pink lips lingered on my face, and I felt a sudden rush of heat in my groin. It had been years since I had been with a woman, and I was suddenly reminded of how much I had missed the smell and taste of intimacy.
Megan followed suit, kissing my other cheek gently, before pulling away to look intently into my eyes.
“See you soon,” she said, before opening the front door and stepping out into the bright sun.
I stood on the doorstep watching the two young girls walking away. I found myself smiling as they made their way carefully down the walkway to the car. The twins were absolutely stunning, and I remembered what their Mother had said about how they were going to break hearts.
Little did they know, they had already broken mine, for they were a constant reminder of all that I had lost.
I watched them drive away, their hands frantically waving goodbye as their car slipped out of sight. Boy, did I miss their Mother, I thought as I made my way back into the house.
I missed her more than ever. Friday night arrived quickly, and I eagerly got showered and dressed in preparation of my night with the twins. They had called earlier in the week to give me directions to the restaurant, and not sure of the area I wanted to get an early start so I wouldn’t run the risk of being late.
I ran a comb through my hair, gave myself a once over and made my way out to the car. I programmed the address into my GPS and let the slick sound of a woman’s voice guide me along, as I raced down the highway and turned off on Exit 3.
I snaked through the roads carefully, as herds of pedestrians jay walked in between lanes. Annoyed, I slowed to a crawl, remembering why I enjoyed suburban life so much. Sure, city life had its redeeming qualities, and conveniences, but nothin could replace the quiet streets and friendly neighbors of my little town.
Finally, my GPS guide revealed that I was only two blocks away from the restaurant, and I guided my car carefully through the streets until I reached my destination. Finding parking was a whole other matter, and I ended up having to drive around the back in order to find an open spot. Stepping out of the car, I pushed the lock button on my remote pad and walked back around the corner to the entrance of the restaurant.
Looking around, I spotted the twins making their way up the sidewalk, giggling like two schoolgirls who were caught in the middle of sharing a secret. They spotted me, their faces lighting up and I felt my body relax at their warm greeting.
“Hey!” Megan smiled, hugging me tightly. Morgan gave me a quick squeeze, before guiding me to the front door. “This is an experience you’ll never forget,” she grinned.
I looked up at the restaurant sign, suddenly curious as to what was so special about this place. I had never been here before, but it looked like any other usual restaurant and pub. The girls assured me that it was anything but ordinary.
“We’re eating in the dark,” Megan revealed, her face lit up with excitement. “It’s a rather interesting dining experience, that’s for sure.”
Morgan giggled, her hand flying up to cover her mouth.
“Definitely interesting,” Morgan agreed, struggling not to laugh. “It’s a holistic experience that you’ll never forget.”
I was confused as ever, looking back and forth between the girls who obviously knew something that I didn’t. Why not, I thought, shrugging my shoulders.
“All right, let’s go.” We walked into the restaurant, finding ourselves in a well brightly lit entrance hall. Looking around, I mused over the gold trimmings, and expensive paintings on the walls as the girls confirmed their reservation.
“Just one moment”, the greeter replied before disappearing around the corner. He returned a few minutes later, announcing that our table was ready.
“Just hold the person in front of you and you’ll be guided to your table,” he instructed. I looked over at the girls who were smiling widely, their eyes bright and cheerful.
They looked radiant, and I thought to myself how I’d have preferred a regular restaurant where I could look into their beautiful eyes rather than sitting with them in the dark.
“Are you ready?” Morgan asked, looking directly at me. She bit gently on her bottom lip nervously, and I smiled, realizing that it was her first time eating in the dark, as well. “I’m ready,” I replied, winking at my beautiful stepdaughters.
I let the girls guide me into the main doors, where I was immediately blinded. As my eyes struggled to focus, I felt their hands reaching for me, gripping my arms and guiding me along.
A soft, deep voice greeted us as we crept slowly through the dark. “Welcome to the Dark Room,” the man said.
