Danny has been the Beta and Ethan Randall’s right-hand man for nearly two decades. It’s quite the perk for Danny; besides being the Beta, he knows the ins and outs of the money-printing business owned by the Alpha, the ruler of The Silver Fire Pack.
Danny didn’t answer my question immediately. He just stared at me with his light brown eyes-warm and bright colours, especially in the summer.
“Is it because the Alpha already has a fiancee that this is bugging you?”
Finally, he replied. Even though it wasn’t what I wanted to hear, it was impressive because Danny responded to my seemingly dumb question.
“Isn’t that obvious?” I shot back. “If you’re guarding someone who isn’t your Luna, it’s a waste of your time ’cause you’re serving a stranger who will never be tied to your Pack.”
“Why do you think that? Isn’t that the reason Alpha Ethan lets me be here? Is it because he’s trying to keep you around? So-”
“Keep me around for what?” I cut him off. “Even the people I loved are no longer in this world just because I wasn’t wanted. They killed the only family I had-Sister Alberta.” I added.
“What exactly do you want to know from me?”
“From my conversations with your Alpha, isn’t it clear that I want to hear more about who killed them?”
I wanted to know, but Danny was hedging. “I don’t have any information on that ’cause Alpha didn’t involve me in the investigation.”
Lies! Of course, it was a lie cooked up to sound believable, and I bought it.
Oh, come on. Where in the world is a Beta not involved in Alpha matters? The Alpha hardly ever goes alone to get info; they need the Beta and trusted Warriors and Informants to do all that. But look at this guy, acting like his lie was natural, and I genuinely believed him.
“So, you’re saying Ethan trusts Chen Lien more than you?”
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing. You’re incompetent if you’re not involved in situations and conditions that make Ethan think you should be. Ethan could replace you with anyone, including Chen Lien.”
“Chen Lien is Packless,” he stressed.
I glanced at Danny. He seemed ticked off, and I could see how my words hit a nerve. “Precisely because he’s Packless, he can be recruited anytime, for any position. Besides, Chen Lien has done a lot for Ethan, right? Chen Lien builds arms trade, narcotics, and most business relations, and you guys are like different chess pieces. The difference is that Chen Lien is played more than you, who sits and watches the game end.”
“Spending some time with The Silver Fire Pack has made you arrogant, huh?” he countered with a sentence that felt like anger.
“Ethan brought me there, and Ethan also didn’t let me go, even if I wanted to.”
“When did you want that, my lady?”
I sighed. My neck ached from turning my head towards the window during the trip to avoid eye contact with Ethan as much as possible. But now, my neck felt stiff.
So, I rested my chin on my hands, dropping them onto the table while staring at Danny’s face as if wanting to scold me. “I always asked Ethan. I asked him to reject me, but he never did. I also told him to choose Lucy Torrance, but I was still in the Packhouse. If not for your narrow-minded Alpha, maybe he wouldn’t have let his Luna stay in the same nest as a fiancee who might become trash.”
“Why are you so bold to talk about Miss Torrance like that? Aren’t you afraid Alpha Ethan will get mad because of your attitude?”
“Ethan never liked me from the start, so why should I be afraid if he gets offended by one of my words?”
That’s true. I’ve never been anything significant in Ethan Randall’s eyes. Worthless, that’s the right word to describe me in the perfect life of an Alpha leading The Silver Fire Pack. From the beginning, Ethan and I never had any sweetness. I’d be shocked if Ethan Randall suddenly defended me for everything I did, regardless of whether he liked it.
“You know, Danny,” I shifted our conversation. “If Lucy Torrance had never been Ethan’s fiancee, and he met me sooner, we might have taken over The Moon Fall Pack completely.”
“Y-you?!”
“Didn’t I hear that Christopher Gale is-hemp!”
“Don’t ever mention that man’s name carelessly!” he suddenly covered my mouth, making it hard for me to breathe.
After saying that, Danny immediately let go of me. “I don’t know what’s going on in your head, but I hope you can keep your mouth better than today, Lady Halle.” He warned me as if what I just said was something he couldn’t tolerate.
“Why say that? Isn’t talking about someone with far less power than The Silver Fire Pack supposed to be normal?”
“Do you think The Silver Fire Pack is on par with The Moon Fall?”
I raised an eyebrow. What is this? Does my thinking differ from the common understanding that The Silver Fire Pack, led by Ethan, is a large Pack that makes everyone think it’s the strongest?
Not. Seeing how Danny acted, I thought The Moon Fall Pack, led by Christopher Gale, was the strongest among all the Packs in this country. So now, should I feel scared, just like Danny?
“Does a fake Alpha like Christopher Gale deserve such power over a Pack that isn’t his?” I asked. And that question made Danny even more flustered.
Everyone was watching us. Especially those in the room, observing me and indirectly, listening to our conversation. Like Danny, they looked scared.
Initially, I didn’t want to get too involved, but seeing their condition made me wonder what kind of strength Christopher Gale had that scared everyone.
No. It’sIt’sIt’s not about that fake Alpha but The Moon Fall Pack. Is that Pack so big that everyone trembles in fear? I need to find out about that Pack itself. As I suspected, I’ll be playing words with many people, no matter if it means I’ll die.
