I tossed the food wrapper I just finished into the trash can that wasn’t too far from us. Even though Ethan initially wanted us to leave the place immediately, I still wanted to enjoy the night outside the big villa, which felt stuffy, so we ended up staying here.
“You sure you don’t wanna leave yet?”
“Of course. This is fun. Hearing street music that’s different from my old place, seeing people with different clothes and ways of speaking, even different languages. It’s just too fun to miss,” I answered.
Ethan clicked his tongue in annoyance and laughed at what I said. “Huh, what kind of nonsense are you talking about? You never even left that church dorm for years, right? So why are you talking like you’re actually enjoying something you’ve missed?”
“I didn’t go out often. But didn’t I say that I often went with Sister Alberta to attend some important masses at big churches in several Packs? There’s no reason for me to feel that this is my first time in a foreign place, in a crowd, enjoying a meal,” I replied. And that wasn’t a lie.
Ethan whistled after hearing that I had left the small Pack church many times with Sister Alberta and did many things I couldn’t do while in the Pack.
“That’s because you don’t look like someone who’d leave that place, so I thought you’d never gone anywhere. Even when we met at that beachside restaurant, you looked like someone who’d just seen the world for the first time.”
That’s true. Nothing Ethan said about how I lived in the church dorm was wrong. My life as someone who never went anywhere in my whole life or stayed too far from the nuns really made me like a frog in a well who’d shiver when suddenly startled by an ant.
“Aren’t you always there to protect me? Isn’t that the Alpha’s job to guard his Luna?” I said with a smile.
As expected, Ethan gave a terrifying smirk. As if it was a smile that signaled immense disgust. Of course, Ethan couldn’t possibly do that to me, given that he had another very precious woman in his life.
“By the way, I want to eat a bit more. Can we buy something over there and come back?” I pointed randomly. Even though I didn’t know what kind of food vendor was there, I could ensure this would slightly divert Ethan’s attention from when I disappeared earlier.
When choosing some foods sold at the night market, I saw a few people standing, doing nothing. They were people sent by Christopher Gale to watch me even though that man had gone somewhere.
I don’t know what he wanted, but my gut told me I should be warier than him. Not just him but everyone around me, including Ethan.
After buying more food, we strolled around the city while Ethan drove. It was something to be enjoyed because if we returned to Silver Fire Pack, I would never experience something like this.
When I returned to the villa, Chen Lien was still not there. Did Ethan give him too much work that he hadn’t returned yet this late? But isn’t that how their job as mafia works? What’s the difference between that job and what I’ve seen on TV all this time?
Unable to sleep, I just sat while staring at the high-rise buildings clearly visible in front of me. A view that made me feel different from what I had seen while in the quiet Silver Fire Pack. By the way, how is Lady Spectra after getting the deal they wanted from Ethan? I’ll visit them after returning to the Silver Fire Pack.
Knock… knock!
I was startled when someone knocked on the door. Something quite unusual, even when I was in Silver Fire Pack, Ethan or the servants there never did this to me in the middle of the night.
“Am I bothering you?”
“Chen Lien?”
“Hey, wanna step out for a bit?”
“What’s going on?”
“There’s something I want to talk to you about.”
Wow, this is something I didn’t expect. I’d like to know what Chen Lien wants to discuss. Curiosity got the better of me, and I nodded, agreeing to the long-haired man’s invitation to speak outside.
The whole villa was very dark. No sign that there seemed to be anyone still up at this hour; could Ethan already be asleep at this time? Seems unlikely because Ethan wasn’t the type to sleep early like most normal people.
“Is all your work done?”
“How did you know I went for work?”
“Ethan wouldn’t let some of his affairs be handled by others just like that, and considering you are his trusted person, and I thought, you probably couldn’t do what you wanted to do in this country,” I said. But my words made Chen Lien smile. A smile that seemed to mean nothing.
“Has Ethan been treating you well?” he asked.
“Why do you ask that? Are you worried about me, if I’m treated poorly by the Alpha ruler of The Silver Fire Pack?”
“Considering Ethan isn’t a man capable of doing good things, this question seems quite rational to ask.”
Oh, this is something that made me want to laugh and feel very pathetic at the same time. “Ethan isn’t a good man, but he treated me quite well today.”
“Even though he said he wouldn’t hesitate to kill you even if you’re his Luna?”
I stopped. This felt like I was hit by an unusual question. I was angry with Ethan because I overheard Chen Lien’s conversation with Ethan, but I didn’t expect Chen Lien to ask me this.
I looked at Chen Lien, who also fell silent. He looked at me, noticing how the man looked at me like I was an interesting object.
“If I think that’s what he wants, then maybe he will do it. Because haven’t I always been just a useless pawn?” I said, and my words successfully made Chen Lien silent.
