Mary Davies
I could not keep my eyes off him as he walked towards the empty seat beside Xander which was right in front of Aminat and I.
“He is cute, too bad he is not a Muslim.” Aminat whispered to me, I fought the urge to roll my eyes. She won’t be saying this if she knows what he is capable of and the things he has done. I groaned out loudly, almost facepalming as I remembered the packaged box he sent, I still haven’t gotten rid of it. It should still be under my bed where I left it all this while.
“Mary Davies,” Mr Lucas called out, that got my attention immediately.
“I will still be needing your help like I told you on Friday, this announcement is for you and the new students.” Mr Lucas added, that made my heart race, maybe because I had a little bit of idea of what might be coming next.
“Mary Davies is the scholar who has been topping the class grades, her grades her higher than everyone else’s and it keeps getting higher weekly. Aminat Akash is the second on the list, but Mary Davies is far ahead of Aminat Akash.”
My grades have actually improved and I was back to being the straight A student I have always been.
“They are both nominated as the student of the year, three more people will be added later to the nomination list. But for now, the Principal and I have decided that Mary Davies will be assisting the new boy, Edward Jones in his studies, so he can catch up with everyone.”
“So, basically you are going to be his tutor. Don’t worry, it is going to be for just a few weeks.”
Trust me, I was literally screaming. But I wasn’t screaming out, I was screaming on the inside. My head was muddled up, I felt like something was about to shift in my world. Trust Hawk Andrews to plan something has despicable as this. He obviously has everything planned out and he was back to make my life miserable.
I will rather tutor the other new student than tutor Hawk Andrews. I was about to suggest it to Mr Lucas, when Clive Owen suddenly slammed his hands on the desk.
“Dad, I also deserve to get a tutor like him. I am a new student too.” Clive Owen said. I blinked my eyes rapidly, pushing a finger into my ear to confirm if I heard correctly.
“Dad!” Everyone in class said at the same time.
I heard Mr Lucas groan, I am not sure if I heard him cuss. But he looks frustrated.
“Sorry class, I forgot to make proper introductions.” Mr Lucas said.
“Didn’t seem like you were planning to,” Clive Owen said, snickering loudly.
“Clive here is my son.” Mr Lucas said, murmurings followed. I guess none of us expected this. Lucas Owen and Clive Owen. I won’t have figured it out, if Clive didn’t say anything. I wonder why Mr Lucas doesn’t use his last name though.
I sighed, there goes my chance of avoiding Hawk Andrews.
“And I will be tutoring him myself,” Mr Lucas added. I immediately raised my hands up.
“Okay, Mary Davies. You have something to say to us.”
“I am sorry sir, but I won’t be able to help Haw… I mean the new students with his studies, can you please appoint someone else.” I said, trying my best not to have eye contact with anyone.
“I have a problem with sleep, I think I have insomnia.” I added, it was obviously a lie to everyone but not to Mr Lucas, he already assumed I don’t get enough sleep based on the wet dream issue of last week Friday.
“Okay, that is fine with me. Aminat Akash will you be able to help the new student in studying?” Mr Lucas asked Aminat.
“Yes,” Aminat said smiling, I turned my gaze to her and she seems to be excited about it. Seeing Aminat all excited to help Hawk Andrews in his studies made me angry, I was expecting her to refuse like I did.
Mr Lucas seems to be happy about finding a tutor for the new student, but I wasn’t. I just wanted him to leave the class so I could also leave without taking an excuse, first period won’t be starting anytime for now.
To make matters worst, Hawk Andrews turned back to face Ami.
“Thank you, I appreciate this and I am going to repay you soon.” He said. Hawk Andrews or should I say Edward Jones was really ignoring me, he didn’t even spare me a glance, it was like I never existed to him. I scoffed as I watched him and Aminat talk and laugh together, they looked like old friends, they were getting along with each other.
I was so sure this is Hawk Andrews, it is definitely him, maybe he was only pretending. Unless he already lost his memories, maybe that was it. I face palmed, I didn’t want them to catch me watching them. But seeing them laugh together was really pissing me off.
I didn’t even notice Mr Lucas already left the class.
Suddenly Jemima screamed out loud, everyone immediately turned their attention to her. She was staring at her phone in shock, whatever she must have seen must be a problem.
“O D Eleven’s new update is similar to what is happening here,” She said, I rolled my eyes. What a stupid way of getting attention.
“Come on Jemima, what is that supposed to mean?” Jordan, the principal’s son asked boredly.
“I am not kidding here, you guys need to read the new update on the story that has to do with the pregnant girl. There are two new students in this chapter update. Just like we have now!” Jemima exclaimed loudly.
“Oh my goodness, that is true.” Aminat said, scrolling through her phone.
“Remember, the information he gave about himself. O D Eleven is here in L S.” Aminat added.
“What if the story is actually real, what if someone is pregnant amongst us.” Jemima said, the class was suddenly quiet.
This only made my heart race, does someone else knows about me other than Justin and Juliet. Justin can’t write this and Juliet hates me, but I don’t think she is capable of this.
“What if the writer is Mr Lucas.” Alphonso said, breaking the silence.
Clive Owen began to laugh out loud. “Trust me, my father can never write a piece like that, I thought I was the only one who enjoys O D Eleven’s stories.”
“Guys, stop fretting. I guess it is only a coincidence. Let’s just forget about this, it is an ordinary story.” Juliet said. I tried my best to calm my racing heart, yes it is a coincidence. I kept reassuring myself. But I was shocked Juliet said this, was she trying to help or is that a way of looking out for me.
You know that feeling you get when you feel someone is watching you. I was having that feeling right now, but I didn’t dare turn my head. I sighed heavily before slowly turning my head to Aminat. They were both back to talking and they were exchanging numbers, something settled at the pit of my stomach but I couldn’t place what it was.
My eyes scanned him, suddenly he looked up and our eyes met. It was like his eyes were summoning mine. It was like I was in a trance. He looked away, breaking eye contact. I noticed something, there was no form of recognition. Is he really Hawk Andrews.
*******
The doctor’s appointment has been fixed to this Saturday, I will be knowing my child’s fate in few days time. I was glad to be in the comfort of my room, I just hate Monday’s. If there was a way I could have avoided going to school, maybe I would have gone for it. Sometimes I wonder who created the idea of schooling.
Today wasn’t that fun, Mondays were not my thing. Friday is the only day I look forward to in a week. Weekends are like a pill for relieving pain. I am not sure of how to take the events of today, most especially the new student, O D Eleven’s story which is similar to what is going on with me right now and of course the sudden closeness between Aminat and Edward Jones.
“Edward Jones.” I muttered under my breath as I sat up in bed. He was definitely the same person as Hawk Andrews. Suddenly I remembered the packaged box. I immediately got down from my bed and squatted below the bed. I checked every corner of my room when I couldn’t find it under my bed. I left it under my bed and I am so sure of that. It’s not possible for the box to grow legs and walk away.
I sat on the floor with my hands on my head. Who could have taken the box.
I got up from the floor, grabbed my phone and pushed it into the back pocket of my jean. I am going to try my luck by asking Justin and Juliet about it, I halted suddenly. I was hearing sounds from the room next to mine.
I shrugged my shoulders as I walked towards the window I had in my room, I pushed the burgundy colored curtains to the left side, the afternoon breeze brushed against me, sending my hair swishing over my shoulders.
I heard a tap on my door. “Come in.” I growled out. Justin peeped in.
“Dad wants to see us right now. Come downstairs and leave whatever you are doing.” Justin said.
“Okay,” I replied, walking towards him. We made our way down the stairs. The last time dad called us together, it was because he wanted to inform us about a certain rich guest. I wonder what the reason might be this time around.
“What’s this all about again?” I heard Juliet growl behind me. I didn’t even notice she was behind us.
“The guest is here.” Justin said immediately we climbed down the last stairs.
“Oh my goodness, why didn’t you tell me this earlier. I would have at least made an effort to look better than this.” Juliet whispered.
Vanessa was already sitting on one of the chairs in the sitting room, with a glass of lemonade juice in her hands.
I couldn’t catch a sight of dad and the guest as we all sat down. Then I heard my dad’s laughter, it sounded closer. I turned my head towards the direction the laughter was coming from, only to find that familiar pair of eyes looking at me. I was stupefied, he is the fu*king guest. Not now! I haven’t gotten over the fact that he is the new student, how am I supposed to ignore the fact that he is the guest and he will be living in the same house I live in. Warning bells began to chime loudly in my ears. Every other sound was out.
“What the fu*k, he is one of the new student in school.” Justin shouted.
“Yes, and it seems like someone here has just lost the chance of getting a good job after college.” Juliet whispered, but I heard her correctly. I can’t believe he is the so-called guest dad wants us to impress in order to get a favor from. How the fu*k did he plan all this. Business partner my foot. This is basically a sham, something must be going on which I don’t know about.
His gaze was intense and piercing, it only spells doom for me. I remembered one of the words written on the cut out paper. ‘Wherever you go, I will find you’
The aura of dominance that surrounds him triggered the memories I have been trying to bury. Hawk Andrews wasn’t joking all along. After all he has the power and money.
“Edward Jones, meet my children. Justin, Juliet and Mary.” Dad said, smiling widely.
“And of course, you have met my beautiful wife.”
“We know him dad, he is one of the new students in school.” Juliet said, grinning widely.
“Oh yes, you told me about that,” Dad said facing Edward.
“I hope you enjoy your stay here with us, Mary his room is next to yours, help him feel at home.” Dad added.
My eyes widened in shock, I shifted my gaze to Vanessa and she gave me a smile.
“Isn’t he cute?” She mouthed.
