Neo’s POV
It was early morning, the second day after mummy told us that some people were trying to hurt Melody. I couldn’t believe it still. Who would want to hurt a girl as sweet as that?
I couldn’t sleep at all through the night and kept tossing about on the bed, trying to think of a way to protect Melody on our own terms. I couldn’t leave it to mummy, daddy and Uncle Liam alone to solve. They wouldn’t be there all the time. I had meant it when I had said we would also protect Melody. Now, the problem was I couldn’t think of how we were going to do that.
I thought of telling Melody and decided against it. It was a bad idea. She wouldn’t believe me and asides that, it would only freak her out. There was no way we could tell her without telling her that we heard it from a witch and revealing that we were werewolves. To humans, we were monsters based on all the stories they heard and movies they watched.
It was either she thought we were monsters or crazy and both weren’t going to let us stick close to her as we needed to. If she thought we were monsters, she would file a restraining order on us if she was nice enough to not get us killed and if she thought we were crazy, we were going to find ourselves in a rehabilitation center before we could argue our case.
I let out a prolonged sigh, groaning as I turned in bed. Saving someone seemed harder than I thought.
“What is wrong with you?” Nathan asked as he sat up in bed, turning to face me.
“I couldn’t sleep.” I admitted to him.
“Me too.” He confessed. “Because of Melody?”
“Hmmm.” I grunted.
“Why are you both chattering so early in the morning?” Nick grumbled as he rolled in his sleep.
He got up and checked out the window and frowned as he turned to face me and Nathan, walking back towards his bed. I knew what he had seen that had made him sour. It was still dark outside as it was barely morning and Nick hated getting awake until it was fully dawn.
I had to admit to myself that I admired how he could sleep with the revelation we had found out yesterday.
“It will soon be dawn.” Nathan said.
Nick rolled his eyes. “Try another lie, please. It’s still more than two hours to dawn. I would like to sleep if you don’t mind.” He said and turned his back to us.
“How can you sleep in a situation like this?” Nathan accused him.
“Are we at war?” Nick scoffed without looking back.
I knew he would be asleep soon within minutes.
“Aren’t we at war?” Nathan countered. “Someone is trying to hurt Melody.”
Nick turned to Nathan and blew out an exasperated sigh. “And we can stop them by not sleeping?” He said with dripping sarcasm.
“We don’t have to act like we don’t care. Do you think Neo and I didn’t want to sleep too?”
“You clearly don’t want to. I don’t see how I can be of any help to Melody by having a headache tomorrow. Have you been able to come up with a way of saving her by thinking all through the night?” Nick hissed.
Nathan colored up and didn’t say anything. I sensed he was unable to. He probably hadn’t been able to come up with anything like me. I saw Nick’s smirk at his expression and Nathan was going to get mad soon and a fight was going to ensue. I couldn’t allow that.
I wasn’t about to let my brothers fight because of Melody and we shouldn’t wake our parents up either. They would never tell us anything again if we caused trouble.
“Let’s not fight.” I told my brothers. “Why don’t we think of a solution together?”
Nathan relaxed and looked at Nick. “Do you have any idea? Should we sneak out at night to watch over Melody’s house?”
“I’m sure dad and Uncle Liam are already doing that and rotating the shifts between themselves.” I said.
That was the problem with ideas. I would have come up with a new one all through the night if not that I knew the adults were already doing that.
“If only we can kidnap her and keep her safe in an undisclosed location till her sixth birthday and everything would be fine.” Nathan sighed.
“Don’t think that would make her hate us?” I asked. Not that I hadn’t thought of it. It had seemed like a smart idea before turning to a ridiculous one. If it was right, I knew dad and Uncle Liam would have done that.
Nick snorted. “Have you forgotten that her enemies who want to kill her are witches and wizards? They can locate her no matter where we keep her with spells.” He sighed. “I can’t believe you are staying awake and choosing not to sleep just to come up with ridiculous ideas.”
“Tell us your own smart idea then, genius.” Nathan snapped, getting annoyed at him.
“Why do you have to make everything complicated?” Nick sighed. “We school with this girl. We can stay close to her everyday, and ring dad or Uncle Liam on the phone if we suspect anything. We can stall for time till either of them gets there to save the day.”
“That sounds good.” Nathan smiled and then looked at me. “What do you think?”
I nodded, thinking it was a good idea too. “It makes sense. We wouldn’t get in the adults’ way and Melody wouldn’t suspect anything. She will think we are only being friendly.”
“We should tell them our plans when everyone wakes up.” Nathan agreed.
“See? You should have slept. Can you see the benefits of sleeping well?” Nick teased, beaming with pride.
Nathan looked at me and shook his head. I chuckled, knowing what he was thinking of without saying it. Nick could be annoying at times and he was being like that right now. I couldn’t deny that he was right though. We needed to sleep.
“We should sleep.” I said to Nathan. “We will continue making our plans later.”
Nick nodded. “Good thinking, Neo. Operation save Melody can wait till after dawn.” He turned back on his side, turning his back to us. “Please sleep. I don’t want to be disturbed again.”
