Kevin’s POV
“Let’s do this.” I shouted at the men, cheering them on. “Let’s do this one more round.”
The men groaned but it wasn’t because they were complaining but were tired. I knew they were tired but they also knew as much as I did why we had to keep training even if our bones are dying in pain and begging us for some minutes of rest.
I was tired as well but couldn’t afford to stop because of what was at stake. I had no doubt that Kenneth of a bastard was planning something disastrous and we couldn’t afford to slack on building our strength and training our muscles harder, knowing that we would be outnumbered.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he came and hunted us down with all his soldiers. He always seemed to go overboard with everything that he did. Even if he came with a quarter of his soldiers, we were still outnumbered, considering that we weren’t up to twenty here and couldn’t ask for help from our packs.
I couldn’t ask for help to fight this war because I didn’t want my people involved in it and Caleb and Zeke couldn’t dare ask for help from their packs because they mustn’t be found here with us. I was on bad terms with the alpha of the blue river pack and his heir. The two wouldn’t hesitate to chop off Caleb’s and Zeke’s heads if they found out that they were lodging and hiding us here close to their territory.
Being a son to the alpha of the pack and an elder wouldn’t be enough to save those two if they got busted and accused of betrayal. I couldn’t let those two lose their lives because of us when they had been nothing but good to us and only watching out for us. I had to protect them and train harder.
We weren’t even up to twenty and now I had sent two of my men home to get reports from there. I hoped they got back as soon as they could before the rogues find us. It wasn’t like we weren’t still outnumbered by the rogues if they came but having two less soldiers in our camp would affect us.
“Again.” I shouted at the men, busy with my own stunts as well.
Ella wasn’t here. She was busy training with her father and I was glad that she wasn’t here or I wouldn’t be focused on training as hard as I wanted. I would be busy watching out for her and when I wasn’t looking at her, it would feel her looking at me and then I would lose my focus.
I could already feel myself losing focus just by thinking of her and I sighed as I picked up the pace again and continued with my stunts and stretches. I wished that this would end as soon as possible. I couldn’t wait to get rid of Kenneth and his men and put this behind me.
“One more time?” Damien asked, teasing me as he slumped to the ground.
I smirked at him for being naughty. I wasn’t that brutal and he knew it. The men were visibly tired and so was I even though I was doing a great job of hiding it well to keep pushing them on.
They were tired and they ought to be. They had been working their asses off since morning and deserved to be have their rest. They had earned it.
“You can all rest.” I announced and smiled as the men groaned in relief and fell down on their asses to the ground. I did the same as well, stretching my legs as I fell to the ground.
I closed my eyes as I laid on the ground, folding my hands behind my head and allowed the thoughts of Ella to fill my head. I wondered what she was doing at the moment. I wondered if she was still busy training, stubbornly going on till she breaks herself or had given up to rest like we did.
I wished she was near me so I could tell her that it was okay to take some rest, even as a warrior. It would do her no good if she overused herself before the big war day.
“Someone is coming.” Liam announced, his voice breaking into my reverie and shattering it.
I flipped my eyes open and let my senses fly and scan the environment. Liam had always been fast to pick up on scents and sounds which was why I trusted him as my beta among all of my men. I would have picked up on the sound of footsteps before he did or at the same time he did if I hadn’t been distracted by Ella.
Ella. I smiled at the thought of her name. My distraction and my peace.
I stilled. Liam was right. Someone was coming. No, more than that was coming. I thought as I picked up on another footsteps closer than the one I had initially heard.
Had the rogues found us so soon? I shook my head at the thought. It didn’t sound like an army was moving towards us. Maybe they were spies. If they were, we could finish them off in minutes. I didn’t think they would be up to our number here. Even if we were tired, we could still deal with some pesky spies.
Those who were coming were still far off from us but with the way they were walking from the sounds of their feet hitting the ground that I could hear, they would be close to us soon.
They were almost here and I let my sense of smell travel, sniffing the air for their scents. My heart soared as I picked up on their scents. It was a familiar one and my worries subsided.
“Our men are back.” Liam and I said at the same time and looked at each other, smiling at speaking together.
My men was back and I was glad to receive them. What a good way to end the day.
