Kevin’s POV
This fight was hard on me and it wasn’t because I didn’t trust Ella. I knew that she could handle herself but that didn’t mean I would stop feeling overprotective when it came to her.
I wanted to go there and yank her away from the fight but I dared not. Ella would be mad at him and more importantly, I doubted that we would be able to go with the daisies if we interrupted the fight.
I couldn’t do that. We needed to save Liam and had already wasted so much time. I didn’t dare risk Liam’s life because I couldn’t control my emotions.
I knew Ella was going to fight with all that she got because of the love she had for Liam and the guilt that he was lying there for her sake. I had no doubt that she wouldn’t stop until she won so I had to trust her that she would. I had to believe in that smile she had given me before sparring with the spirit.
She had told me with her eyes to believe in her and that was what I was going to do and wish her luck.
I winced as the spirit got a blow to her on her stomach. She doubled over in pain and shrugged off the pain immediately and slashed at his face with her claws. His eyes shone with challenge at Ella’s resilience and he increased the speed and frequency of his blows.
I watched as Ella dove and struggled to evade his blows. She bent low and slashed at him at where he was exposed. He rained blows on her as much as much as she hit him as well and slashed at him with her extended claws.
I turned away from the fight, my ears ringing with an odd sound. I couldn’t watch it again. Ella was bleeding and that was enough to break my heart.
“Oh!” I whimpered as I heard the grunts of both of them though I already had my eyes closed and didn’t know what was going on or who was winning.
“Yay!” I flashed open my eyes as I heard Damien shout. I knew that was a shout of victory and swirled my eyes to where they were fighting.
There she was, my girl standing proud on the fallen body of the guardian spirit. I could see that he was still alive but he was bleeding all over and his chest was heaving. His nose seemed to be bleeding as he had a hand clamped to it and was growling loudly in his throat. It would take him some minutes to be able to stand up with the way he was slumped down on the ground and by that time, we would have plucked all the daisies we needed and left.
“What happened?” I asked, looking around in wonder.
Damien smiled at me. “The Luna slashed at his nose and that was what fell him.”
I smiled. That was my girl. I didn’t have to doubt her. I ran to her and pulled her to me, kissing her fully on the lips. “I’m so proud of you.” I beamed.
“I told you to trust me.” She smiled back at me.
I pulled back and checked her for wounds. She had sustained some injuries but was already healing up. “I’m glad you are okay.” I couldn’t imagine her losing and being kept captive by the guardian spirit.
I had just gotten her free and wasn’t about to lose her to another bastard.
“Let’s get the daisies and leave here before he catches his breath. I can’t trust that this bastard wouldn’t break his promise and want to keep us here once he regains his strength.”
I nodded. I agreed with her. He was indeed a bastard.
We moved towards the daisies, picked as many as we could and walked away, heading home.
Damien started laughing as soon as we were far away from the Dale river.
“What is funny?” I asked, looking at him.
“Maybe he is laughing at how the guardian spirit fell after feeling that he would beat me.” Ella laughed.
“Is that so?” I smiled. “I must say that the bastard got what he deserved. So much for being a spirit.”
Damien shook his head. “I wasn’t laughing at the spirit. I was laughing at you, my lord. I can’t believe how fast you turned into a coward. I was shocked when you closed your eyes and couldn’t watch the fight.”
“A coward?” I gasped at his words. “When your mate is fighting a mean bastard to save everyone’s asses, you will understand why I had to close my eyes.”
Damien sighed and nodded in understanding. “I am glad we have put it behind us. I hope we can go home as soon as we can once we treat Liam. I’m done with the adventures.”
I nodded. “We would be gone soon. I missed home too.”
There was no one outside when we got back to the settlement and it wasn’t much of a surprise when we found half of them in Liam’s room by his bed. I smirked, knowing he would hate himself when he got healed and was told that he was turned to a public spectacle.
He was still unconscious and was being still for longer minutes than he had been been before we left. I was glad that we were back on time.
I knew Liam would hate seeing a lot of people in his room when he finally opened his eyes and asked everyone to go out with the exception of Ella and the village doctor.
We brought out the daisies and began to pound in a small mortar till it was powder. It took a long time to pound it and was grateful that we didn’t waste time getting back here. It would have been a disaster if Liam’s time were up and he turned into a cannibal while we were pounding the daisies into powder. It would be a pain in the ass if I have to claw out his heart after going through all that stress.
The doctor poured into the powder and mixed. He scooped a spoonful and forced it into Liam’s mouth. He gulped and started shaking, his eyes bulging open as he cried out and thrashed wildly on the bed.
“Hold him.” The doctor cried.
We didn’t need to be told twice. Ella and I rushed to his side, me holding him by the shoulders while she held him by the legs.
The doctor moved up and scooped more honeyed powder into his mouth. It wasn’t until she had scooped five spoons of the mixture into his mouth that she got satisfied.
“You can let go of him.” She said, looking at us and inching backwards.
I nodded as I let go of his shoulders and watched as Ella let go as well. I had already sensed that he was calming down after he had gulped down the third mixture and wasn’t as violent as he initially was.
The doctor moved back, packed her stuff and smiled at Liam as he slept on the bed, his breathing already back to normal.
I heaved a sigh of relief and smiled as well. I hadn’t ever thought that I would be grateful for the consistent rise and fall of someone’s chest but gratitude filled my heart as I watched Liam sleep. He looked at peace that it was hard to believe he was a centimeter close to death minutes earlier.
“He should be awake in the next thirty minutes. Don’t disturb him and let his body flush out the toxin.”
“We won’t.” I promised her.
She nodded and walked out of the room.
“He will live.” Ella breathed out in a whisper, her face breaking out in smiles.
“He will.” I nodded at her.
We stood side by side and kept quiet as we watched Liam sleep. As much as we wanted him to open his eyes, we didn’t disturb him as promised.
“Uh,” Ella breathed as Liam gently opened his eyes, looking around him. “He is awake.” She cried, shaking my thigh and I wondered if she knew she was doing that.
She was excited she didn’t know what she was doing.
“What happened?” Liam asked.
“Don’t you remember?” I asked.
He closed his eyes for a brief moment and then frowned as he cursed. “The bastard cannibal bit me. I thought I was going to die.” He sighed.
I shook my head. “Not on my watch. I wouldn’t have let you die.”
“Thanks for saving me.” He smiled weakly at me.
I snorted. “You saved me, Liam. I would have gone crazy if I had lost Ella as the cannibal wanted.”
“And that was why I did what I did. I didn’t think I could stand a crazy alpha.” He chuckled.
I chuckled, shaking my head at him.
“Thank you for saving me, Liam. I’m indebted to you.” Ella said.
“You don’t have to be, my lady. I did it with all pleasure.”
Ella went to tell the men that Liam was awake and I watched and smiled as they all crowded round him and took turns embracing him, grateful that he was alive.
What gave me more joy was the blush on Liam’s face as everyone fussed over him.
