Chapter 40

Book:My Stepfather's Mate Published:2025-4-2

Dave
“Dave!” Aileen called my name and hugged me tightly. “You are my home as well. Mom and you are my precious family. I can’t afford to lose any of you. I’m sorry for acting so rudely with you these past days. I was stupid for behaving like a brat. Even though I knew I was wrong, I kept going at it. I’m so selfish, and bad. I’m not suited to be your mate.”
I patted her back. “It’s okay. As long as you understand your fault, that’s all that matters. And I know, you didn’t do it intentionally. There must’ve been a reason behind it. But, I can assure you that no woman can take your place in my life. No matter what happens.”
She nodded, burying her face into my chest. “I did it out of petty jealousy. Because you were out all day with Mom and ignored my calls and texts. And even after coming home, you were acting quite indifferently with me. I couldn’t accept it that’s why when you approached me, I kept pushing you away and kept running away from you. I even used Marshall for my selfish wish.”
“Hm…that much I know. He confessed it himself earlier during the day. Begged me to fix things with you.”
She looked up the very minute, shocked. “What? He did?”
“Yeah. He was so worried about the fight between the two of us that he voluntarily listened to your demands no matter what they were. But, today he flatly told me to talk with you cause he didn’t see your upset face anymore. Said you look like a lost puppy. And he feels bad for it.”
“I…see…. I troubled him quite as well. He’s a perfect guy, and is also empathetic.”
“Yes, he’s a softie like you. Anyway, we are on good terms now? Or are you still angry?”
She narrowed her eyes at me with a smirk playing up her lips. “Why? Would you kiss me again if I say I am?”
“You bet I would,” I replied, about to press my lips on hers. But she covered my mouth with her hands.
“I was just teasing you. You don’t have to take it seriously,” she giggled. “Go back to your seat and put on the seatbelt. We’re getting late to return home.”
I frowned in response. “You’re no fun. Ruined the mood like that.”
“As if I expect you to be in the mood in the middle of the road like that. Start driving!” she commanded.
“As you say, your highness.” We drove away heading towards our home.
Suddenly, Aileen received a call.
She picked it up with a smile on her face.
“Hello.”
“Uh, yeah. He’s with me,” she glanced at me while answering. “Yes, everything is alright. Thanks for your help. No, no you really helped me out. Yes…see you again and let me treat you to a meal. Sure, it’s a promise. I’m hanging up then, bye.”
She heaved a sigh in assurance afterwards putting aside her phone.
“Who was that?” I asked.
“Uh, Marshall. He wanted to know how everything went between us. I told him everything was alright and you are with me. He was truly happy to hear it.”
“I see. He told me to inform him but I forgot about it. Glad he called you. You don’t have to use him against me anymore.” I teased.
She looked away with a pouty face. “Yeah, good for you. Now, don’t make me mad again or you’ll suffer the consequences.”
“Aren’t you scary?”
“I am”When I placed my hand on her thigh she looked at me with a flustered expression.
“You”
“I’m what?” I continued to caress her thighs slowly and she averted her gaze trying to distract herself.
“You’re unbelievable,” she mumbled underneath her voice but I could hear it clearly. “Can’t you see we are outside? Just bear with it, till we reach home for god’s sake. It’s so embarrassing.”
“Why? Are you getting wet? Am I turning you on?” I whispered low.
She gave me a death glare with reddened cheeks. “Will you just focus on driving? Put your hand away.”
She’s so fun to tease with. “Sure, party pooper. I didn’t even do anything yet and you are already scolding me.”
“Yeah, right. I could see where your hands were going. No inappropriate touching when driving or we might get into an accident for your reckless driving.”
“You don’t have faith in me and my driving skills?” I asked.
“Yes, I do,” she replied, with a mocking smile. “But, I don’t have any faith in a horny man’s driving skill. So, you gotta focus. No more yapping.”
“You’re calling me horny now?”
“You aren’t?”
“That’s…. fine you win.”
Can’t win against any women in arguments. They always manage to win.
After we reached home, I asked the maid to find out if Emilia wasn’t back home yet.
I called to ask when she’ll be back. After ringing two times she picked up the call. “Hey, when will you be back? It’s getting late.”
“Uh, I’m sorry, I won’t be back home today. I have a friend’s shift to cover she had a newborn and he’s sick. So yeah, will be back tomorrow morning.”
“I see.”
“What about Aileen? Is she back yet?”
“Yeah, I drove her back from college. Do you wanna talk?”
“Uh, no, it’s fine. What I wanted to know was, um…. did you talk with her regarding what I asked you to?” she was a bit hesitant.
“Oh, that…. yeah. I did.”
“What did she say?”
“Hm….”It’s not like I can tell her she was jealous of us. It would’ve been so easier that way.
“Well, she was a bit stressed about her studies and college life. After talking it out with me, she feels better.”
“Really? Are you telling me the truth? It looked way more complex than just college life problems. It’s something way more than that.”
The keen sense of a mother. Aileen couldn’t hide her true feelings from Emilia. And it’s logical if we think about it.
But, she doesn’t need to hear the truth. Right away yet.
“Dave? Why aren’t you speaking?”
I cleared my throat. “If you don’t believe it hear it yourself. Wait,” I looked around to see Aileen sipping water from a glass on the couch.
“Aileen! Can you come here for a bit? Your mom wants to talk to you.” I yelled.
She heard my voice and came over to my side running.
“What is it?”
I forced my phone into her hands. “Your mom wants to talk. Take it.”
She answered it right away. “Um, hello Mom. How are you? Will you be back home?”
“Oh…I see…Me? Yeah, I’m fine. No, I’m still in my outside clothes. I’ll take a shower then we’ll have dinner together.” Aileen looked at me when saying that.
Is she hinting me something?
“Yeah, you too eat on time and don’t overwork yourself. See you tomorrow. Goodnight. Bye, love you. I’ll give him the phone.”
She ended the call and handed the phone over to me.
“Hello, did you believe my words now?”
“Dave, she sounds a whole lot better than how she did yesterday. What magic did you do? She’s back to her old self.”
“I know right? But, it’s no magic, just some conversation.”
“Whatever it may be. Thanks for it. You really deserve more appreciation.”
“Now, you are embarrassing me. Stop with the thanks. I only did what I was supposed to do. Anyway, now you can work in peace, I hope.”
“You bet. I’ll treat you to some nice sushi as thanks. When do you want to eat and where?”
“Let’s see….. maybe you can make it at home then all of us can eat together. Sounds better?”
“Definitely better. Let’s do it tomorrow.”
“Sure.”
“Goodnight honey. Goodnight dear. Bye.”
When I ended the call Aileen stood in front of me with a curious face.
“What did she say to you?”
“Uh…. she’s making sushi tomorrow at home.”
“Not that! What did she say earlier before that?”
She has very good hearing it seems. She knew I was talking about her previously.
“Well,” I wrapped my arm around her back pulling her close to me. “She was worried about your behavior like I was. That’s why she told me to talk with you about it. That’s why I was letting her know everything was alright. You are back to normal.”
“She was…. worried about me?” her face fills with guilt the second later.
“Uh-hm. After all, she’s your mom. Why won’t she be worried about her daughter’s rebellious attitude? I don’t blame her. You went way overboard this time.”
“I know…. I’m sorry.” She took it seriously and apologized genuinely.
“Come on,” I lifted her face by the chin. “I don’t want you to apologize, nor see your sad face. So, let’s not talk about this sad matter, and let’s do something exciting, shall we?”
“Exciting?”
I smiled running my hand down her lower back, stopping at her hips and squeezing it gently.
“I mean, she’s not coming home tonight and there’s no one to interrupt us at home either. And as a punishment for ignoring me, you should please me while we have a great time together? Sounds good?” I whispered against her ears while burying my face in the crook of her neck.
“Sure. Why not?” she replied playfully. “But, I’d like to take a shower and eat first before that. I’m sweaty and hungry at the same time.”
I chuckled, pulling away, “That’s not a problem. I was going to do the same as well. How about I help you wash down and you help me as well? We can save water together like that.”
“Yeah, only if you manage to catch me,” she snorted before running past my side at a fast speed. Playing cat and mouse huh? It’s giving me an adrenaline rush.
