SHAWN’S POV
Her eyes snapped open as she looked up at the ceiling.
“Oh, thank Goodness. You did it! You are awake!” He screamed getting on his feet.
She turned slowly to look at him and made to sit up, but immediately winced in pain.
“No. Don’t try to sit up. Remain the way you are. I will go and get the doctor.” He said and turned to leave.
“Who are you?” She asked in a low tone and he immediately turned to look at her.
“Who am I? Don’t you remember me?”
“I…I don’t.” Then she coughed briefly. “Water, please.”
“Of course. Hold on, I will get the doctor.”
He rushed out of the room and returned with the doctor afterward.
“Hello, Tiffany. Can you hear me?” The doctor asked, smiling down at her.
“Yes, I can. I want water please.”
Shawn gave the Doctor a questioning look and she nodded in affirmation, before he made for the fridge and took out a bottle of water. He walked to Tiffany on the bed, and gave her the water.
His heart raced as he watched the doctor run a vitals check-up on Tiffany. He couldn’t help but worry about her inability to remember him. The doctor had mentioned she might suffer from memory loss but he had not given much heed to it since it was under probability.
The doctor held up his hand and asked Tiffany, “Can you see how many fingers I’m holding up?”
She frowned for a moment, her eyes squinting. Then, she tentatively raised her hand and counted, “Five.”
He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. At least her cognitive abilities seemed intact.
The doctor turned, pointing at him. “Do you recognize this man?”
Tiffany stared at him for a moment, her expression pensive. Slowly, she shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I don’t remember you.”
His heart sank at her words, but he tried to keep a brave face. He knew that her memory loss wasn’t her fault, but it still hurt to hear her say those words. He was a stranger to her now.
After examining her, the doctor placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It’s common for individuals with memory loss to not recognize loved ones. It will take time, patience, and supportive experiences for her memories to come back. In the meantime, it’s crucial that she focuses on her physical healing and gets plenty of rest. Physically, she is stable. The fractures will need time to heal, but nothing too serious. However, her memory loss is a cause for concern. We will need to monitor her closely and see if it improves over time.”
Relief washed over him at the doctor’s words, but it was quickly replaced with a new tide of worry. How long would it take for her memories to return? Would she even remember him or anyone else at all?
As the doctor left the room, He turned back to look at her. “You may not remember me now, but I promise to always be here for you.”
She gave him a strange look before reluctantly nodding.
Then he remembered he had not informed her father and his parents of the latest development, so he took out his phone and placed a call.
TIFFANY’S POV
She was being discharged from the hospital after the doctor declared her fit to go home. As usual, her hospital room was filled with her strange people that called themselves her father and in-laws.
A boy and girl even visited her and said they were her best friend. The hurt on their faces when she said she didn’t recognize them was heart wrenching. She wished she could regain her memory and recognize all of them.
Without being told, she could see the underlying hurt in their eyes whenever they looked at her. She hated the fact that these good people were hurting and worried because of her.
“Are you ready to leave, princess?” The man who called himself her father, asked.
“Yes, I am.”
“Do you need help in standing up?” The one who introduced himself as Shawn and her husband asked, rushing to get side.
She let him raise her up to her feet, and she slipped her legs into her flip flops before heading for the door. Everyone followed suit as they exited the hospital.
A car was waiting, and the door was opened for her as Shawn helped her get in.
“Are you comfortable?” He asked, joining her in the back seat.
“Yes, thank you.” She replied simply and turned to look out the window as the car drove off.
“Where are we headed? She asked, after a few minutes of silence.
“Home.”
“Home?”
“Yes, home. Our home. You stay with me in my house. Our house.”
“Ohhh…okay.”
The remaining drive to the house was graced by silence. Shawn alighted, and helped her out.
“Follow me,” he beckoned as he led her into the House.
The driver followed closely behind, with her luggages. Shawn led the way upstairs to a room he called hers.
“And this is your room.” He gestured to the room. “I bet you missed it. I had to ask your father for your preferences and had it redecorated.”
She nodded as she walked fully into the room, her eyes scanning it. The room looked like a girl’s. Unfortunately, she doesn’t remember being the owner or ever being in it.
“It is nice, but I still can’t remember ever being here or owning this room.”
“It’s fine. I understand and I’m not trying to force you to remember anything. Take your time, okay?”
She nodded and continued looking around the room as she traced her hands on the wall, admiring the interior.
“Are you hungry? It’s noon and you need to eat. Remember, you need to take your medication.”
She nodded again and he led her downstairs to the kitchen.
“What would you love to eat? You love seafood a lot, I will take you to a nice eatery tomorrow for Lunch.”
“Anything is fine.”
“I will make you noodles.” He said and turned to bring out the items he would be needing.
A few minutes later, lunch was ready and they had it in the kitchen.
“Hold on, I will go get your medicine.” He stood up, went upstairs and returned later with the nylon containing her medicines.
He helped her take out the right dosage according to the doctor’s prescription before handing her a glass of water. After she was done, he cleared their plates.
“I’m tired and would love to rest.”
“Oh, that’s fine. The doctor said you should have enough rest as it would help with healing your wounds.” Then he stood up. “I will lead you up to your room.”
She nodded and stood up as he trailed behind her. They got upstairs and he opened the door for her to walk in.
“Let me know if you need anything. That’s your phone on the table, I doubt If you remember the passcode. If you don’t, kindly use the intercom on the table. My number is on it. I will come back to check up on you. Have a nice nap.” And with that, he turned away and closed the door gently behind him.
She sighed in Satisfaction as her body touched the bed, and a few minutes later, she was fast asleep.
