Chapter 48: Envy is Desire

Book:Arya's Second Chance Mate Published:2025-3-31

Mika’s POV
I watched chase. He was in the field playing with his son. He was laughing and all jovial. Unlike the serious face he was. He rarely got angry these days and took lightly at what should have made him angry. He’s changed. It’s no news that he and Arya had spent the night. I hated her for it. I knew I had to do something about it
Chase was mine all along. We were not dating but he was going to ask me out until she came along. I believe we were close. He said he was okay without a mate.
I felt movement behind me and I turned to find Hercules behind me.
“Hey” he smiled.
“Hey” I said.
“So you back from your parents?” I nodded.
“Nice. Wait where are you from?”
I smiled. ” You must not know”
“So why come here?” He said. ” Why leave home?” and just like I was catapulted to a moment that made me who I am now.

The time was 11pm but we were yet to have dinner.
I walked downstairs and sighed as I stared at the faces at the dinner table. My mother and my sisters. I could see my sisters from underneath my lashes, as they sized me from top to bottom. Looking for evidence to tell on me to Dad. I smirked at them as they began looking away.
I had covered my tracks well, this time.
“Hi mum hi girls,-looking at the table, my tummy grumbled-Yummy look at all this food!” I immediately grabbed a spoon.
“Mika!”I looked up to find my mother glaring at me.
“Mum I -“I began but she raised a hand at me.
“How many times have I told you, we have to wait for your father to come home” my mum said still glaring at me.
“But mum I’m starv-”
Mum shot me a death glare and I shut up. I dropped the spoon and slumped back into my chair. I sighed. I hate this family. When I looked up, I could see my sister smirking at me. I rolled my eyes.
“Mum I-“I began.
“Hello everyone!” my father walked into the house and walked straight to the table. “Oh Ava thanks for waiting for me” he leaned and gave my mother a small kiss on the lips. She smiled up at him, rubbing his arm.
“Hi dad” I and my sisters chorused.
“Hi girls” he took off his jacket and took a seat, right next to my mother.
“Alright everyone let’s eat” my mother said smiling broadly. We bow our heads and said the grace. Immediately I scooped the soup into my plate and began to eat.
The moment I looked up, I could see that they all had eyes on me. Just before I could open my mouth to defend myself, they all burst out laughing.
“Oh Mika, you are such a foodie” my Dad said in between laughs. My lips spread into a big grin.
Suddenly, I realized they were the ones that made me feel loved.
“Baby tell me, what was your day like….” My parents began to talk about some mundane stuff they had been involved in. I zoned out of that conversation.
My sisters shut daggers at me, as we silently dragged the salad bowl around the table.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. It was the guard. I recognize him as the one, who was stationed in front of my pack dwelling.
I didn’t think about what might have brought him into the house at this old hour. Who cares? It was a usual thing for us to have visitors at this hour.
My father turned around. “Henry spit it out, what is it this time” he said, dropping his fork.
Being the alpha of the Grouse moon pack, was no child’s play. Dad said he had been training for this position since he was five. And honestly, I could not think of any other perfect Alpha for our pack but my father. Now I think of it, I think my father was born a leader.
But just like everything on earth, it had its bad side.
My father was called upon at very odd hours. I still find it hard, understanding how he and my mum are still madly in love after, all the disturbance.
The guard looked around the table and suddenly his eyes fell on me and he immediately looked away. I felt a cold shiver down my spine. What was wrong?
“Sir, can I speak to you outside?” he said. My father wiped his mouth and stood up. He patted my mum’s shoulder and left.
The moment they left the house, I became restless. I dropped my fork. My appetite suddenly disappeared like a ghost. What was that about?
A thousand and one thoughts ran through my mind. Just then I felt a movement on my shoulder. I flinched.
” Mika is everything all right?” Riley, my immediate elder sister, asked with an eyebrow raised.
“Oh its nothing, I just got my period” I gave her a weak smile as I gently rubbed my belly.
She slowly nodded her head. I knew she didn’t quite believe me but I wasn’t ready to put in more effort, to convince her.
I twirled my head around, looking through the windows.
My breath cut in my throat when I spotted the guard and my father. I watched them as I tried to read their lips but the clashing of cutleries, against china and the chattering from my sisters, made it hard for me to concentrate.
At some point, I would look away and nibble at my food as I tried to maintain my cool. I almost had a panic attack when I looked outside and didn’t see them there again. Where did they go?
Just then the front door opened and I saw my father walk in.
I gulped in some air. My heart beat incredibly fast in my chest. The unease I was struggling with was swirling in my tummy. It was threatening to take my dinner out of me.
I stole a peak at my father. His nose flared and I could hear his ragged breath, from where I sat. I wanted nothing more at that moment but to be a witch and vanish into thin air but unfortunately, I was a werewolf.
He glared at me and I looked at everywhere but at him. It was then that I knew that I had been caught.
“Mika, would you like to share something with us” his voice boomed through the room as the sarcasm in his voice is so thick, that it can halved with a knife.
“Baby what did she do?” my mother asked.
“I don’t know, why she don’t say it” my father said deadpanned.
Suddenly I felt so small.
I stood up quietly. “Daddy I can explain”
“Well start talking” he said.
“What did you do this time?” my mum said as I looked down at my plate, feeling color draining from my face. I could already feel claustrophobic, as I watched them all stare at me. I knew my mother was torn between trying to calm my father down or to defend me.
Then my mother stood up and walked to my father. She looked him in the eyes and she turned back to me. Her face mirroring that of her husband’s.
I knew she was not all my side. My sisters were looking mainly at their food. In as much as they always wanted to tell on me, to Dad, none of them ever had the courage to do that.
Last night was Cassidy’s birthday party. I had promised her that I would come.
“I had to attend my best friend’s party” I muttered.
“How dare you!” my father snarled.
“But dad-”
“Save it, I don’t want to hear it -he walks to my side of the table-I warned you Rebecca, stay off that club!” his voice rose a different tempo as he slammed his fist on the dining table and we all flinched.
Tears pooled at my eyes. I had never seen dad this pissed but I had seen something almost similar. He always got like this whenever he caught wind, of my extracurricular activities.
Suddenly an unfamiliar rage pulled from within me.
“Dad I didn’t kill any one, all I did was go for a party!” I cried out. Shock and anger was awash on my parents face.
“I have never received support and love from this family!” I raised my hands and wiped the tears off my face
“Is that how you see it!” my father barked.
“Mika! Don’t raise your voice while speaking to your father!” my mother scolded. I looked down.
And when I glanced at my sisters, they all look sad. Riley, the one I was close to, had her eyes all glossy. Any moment now, she could start crying. Now dinner had been ruined.
Immediately I pushed back my chair and ran upstairs.
“Mikawhere are you going! Come back here!” my father shouted from behind me. I didn’t stop. I walked out of the house with that no intention of coming back. It was in that cold I met a boy who wanted to kill himself. After I calmed myself, he said his name was Chase.
