CHAPTER 23

DYLAN DONOVIC
My sock cladded foot tapped the floor impatiently as I watched the phone in front of me, not knowing exactly what to think or what to do.
It had never been like this. Caily had never been this hard to appeal and I knew that she could not be as hard as she was feigning to be this time around too. I just had to meet her in person, tell her sweet words and that would be all I need to get her back on my side.
I knew that very well. I knew it from all the other times it had worked, Caily could not say no to me. She could not end this relationship as long as I still wanted it but still, something about this time unnerved me.
Where was she staying? Knowing Caily quite well, she didn’t have friends good enough to let her stay with them for a couple of nights. And Caily could not have possibly decided to check in to some hotel for the next few days, right?
That was possible but I wasn’t so positive that was the case.
“Still thinking about Caily?” Kate questioned, walking into the room while tying her hair up in a bun.
I let my eyes roam her leather outfit clad body for a second before looking at her face which was slightly wet from a visibly light splash of water.
“Is there anything else I should be thinking about at the moment?” I responded Kate with a question.
“There most certainly is. We’ve got a mission in our hands, Dylan. We have to get rid of Dreiken tonight.” she walked over to the table on the other side of the room as I groaned and leaned back into the couch I was sitting on.
“Oh, don’t tell me you completely forgot about it.” She glanced back at me, understanding the meaning behind my groan.
“Just pick one of the guys and take them along with you.” I said uninterestedly, raking a hand through my hair.
“Nah, that can’t happen.” Kate turned from the table and leaned against it to face me, a stern and stubborn look on her face.
“You said it yourself that it was important to get rid of Dreiken without any traces. You have to be the one on it.” She pointed out in a tone that made it clear that she meant business with her words.
“Pick one of the best guys.” I replied in the same tone, leaning forward and switching my gaze to a serious one to match her own gaze.
“You ARE the best we have, Dylan and tonight needs you if it’s going to work out perfectly. Postpone your thinking about that innocent, little thing you call your woman.” Her words were harsher and I couldn’t help but find her tone concerning Caily a bit degrading.
“Kate.” My voice was a harsh groan as I rose from my seat and took long but slow strides towards the other side of the room.
“The only reason I am in this fucking situation, thinking about where the hell Caily is at the moment is because you could not properly handle a simple clean-up job and had to call me in for it.” I reminded her, moving closer to her.
“Dylan!” Kate called my name sharply, almost in a snappy tone and I stopped in my tracks, just a few steps away from her.
“Oh.” She suddenly scoffed and folded her arms underneath her breasts.
“I had no idea I could not call you when you are out with your pretty woman.” She sounded taunting and that was ridiculous. This attitude wasn’t usually Kate’s thing.
“Right.” I pressed my lips into a grim line. I took two steps closer to her with the stern look still on my face.
“From now on, Kate, whenever I am out with Caily and you get stuck on a mission, somehow, call for backup from the other guys. Don’t reach out to me.”
“Really, Dylan? Is that what this is going to lead to now?” Kate uncrossed her arms and dropped both hands on her waist.
“You are going to prioritise some woman over your job. I thought we both agreed that this job would always matter first to us.” She pointed out and I suppressed an eyeroll.
“It can’t keep fucking coming first all the fucking time. Once I get Caily back, I will only be following schedule. Any urgent job or mission would not be taken up by me.”
“And how sure are you that you are going to get Caily back?” She took a step close to me.
“I will. I always do and this time will be no different.”
The look on Kate’s face made me wonder for one tiny second if Kate was actually jealous of Caily, if she really wanted the position that Caily occupied in my life but the wondering was gone in a second. I knew Kate very well. If there was something Kate would never delve in, it was love, crushing or relationships. The only thing that mattered to her was missions, jobs and making us enough money to get us up.
There was a bit of tension between us as we stared at each other. My eyes were questioning her words and her actions towards me but her eyes were unwilling to let up on any information. I tilted my head a little, still trying to get something from her.
“Fuck this!” she cursed, breaking the tense eye contact.
I was going to call her name and say something but a knock on the door made me press my lips back into a thin line.
“Come in.” It was Kate who let in whoever was at the door.
The door opened and one of our men walked in. He was dressed in casual wears, an indication that he wasn’t on duty or any mission for the day.
“Why are you here?” Kate asked and he looked towards me.
“Tim.” I called his name and he headed towards me.
“I will just get the fuck out of here, okay?” Kate said and walked towards the door. I watched her steps as she stopped by the door.
She looked back at me.
“She won’t always come back to you.” Those words made my suspicions come back but then, again, Kate was never the type to be interested in any sort of relationship.
Without another word exchanged in the room, she pulled the door open and stepped out of the room. My gaze remained on the door for the next few seconds before I diverted it to Tim.
“Did you find out her location?” I asked. It was not my thing to use my business for my personal gains but I really needed to know exactly where Caily was. I needed to go get her back and calm this fucking anxiety in me.
“Yes, I got her location. But it’s a little bit..” there was hesitation on his face.
“Where is she? Out of the country?” I asked.
“No sir. She is still in the country but she will not be easily accessible, in my opinion, except at her workplace.”
“Tim, shut the fuck up about accessibility or inaccessibility and tell me exactly where the fuck Caily is!” I snapped, having just enough of the irritation I was been caused today.
“She is currently in the Giacometti’s Estate. Let me be clearer, she is currently residing with Pietro Giacometti” he replied and my brows furrowed.
With Pietro? The same Pietro Giacometti I knew? How in the world would Caily have met with Pietro? What was between them? How could Caily be staying with that psychopath?
Everyone in this fucking line of business knew Pietro Giacometti and people like me knew best how to avoid ever coming across him. It was best to never know why he was called the devil and a lot of other similar names that were said to not be befitting enough of the psychopathic evil that resided inside of Pietro Giacometti.
“Caily has no business with him. There is no way they could have met. They have no reason to meet and there is especially no reason for Caily to be spending days with him. That… that Psycho… Caily can’t stay with him.” I shook my head and grabbed my phone to call Caily.
She had to get the fuck away from Pietro Giacometti. Whatever reason or whatever way she had entangled herself in his web, she had to untangle herself and get out while she is alive.
“Fuck!” I cursed and threw my phone across the wall, recalling that she had blocked me.
“Pietro… Pietro… Pietro Giacometti” I whispered the name underneath my breath.
It was a name I could not scratch. Whatever he does to me or to Caily, I would never be able to stop him or get back at him. If he decides to claim Caily as a sex toy, I would never be able to fight back.
I could not let that happen. Caily belonged to me and I loved her. She had to remain mine forever, I could not lose her to some psychopath who would only use and ruin her.
“No, Caily has to leave him now. Like fucking now.” I muttered underneath my breath and stretched a hand towards Tim.
“Give me your phone.” I demanded and he hastily dug a hand into his pocket and pulled his phone out.
My head was pounding as I dialed Caily’s contact, feeling beads of sweats gather on my forehead.
“Caily, you have to leave him. You have to… You have to.”
