Chapter 42

Book:The Virgin Wife Published:2025-3-31

Eve..
Since we weren’t that far from Max’s store, we walked back to the store instead of taking a cab like I insisted.
Max insisted that walking is good for the body and so I had no choice but to follow him because whenever Max throws a tantrum, I’m left with no options.
We walked until we got there and then we saw a courier coming out of the office.
“Looks like someone got a package.” I teased Max who walked faster to the office to meet the courier who seemed to be waiting for what I assumed to be the signature of the recipient.
“I’m the one you’re waiting for.” Max said the moment he stood in front of the courier.
“You’re the one I’m waiting for?” The courier seems to be startled.
“Yes, didn’t you just drop off something for me?” Max asked, confused by his attitude.
“You’re Mrs Coleman?” The courier asked, drawing my attention.
“I was told she was a woman.” The courier seems to mumble to himself.
“That would be me.” I said stepping forward so he could see me.
“Mrs Coleman, I was asked to deliver this document personally to you.” He said.
“To me?”
“By who?” I asked.
“I don’t know who the message came directly from but it’s from Jason’s Tech.” He said, giving me the file in his hands.
“So you didn’t drop any package for me?” Max asked and if not for how tense the situation seemed, I would have laughed.
“No, when I got in, I was told Mrs Coleman went out with the owner so I decided to wait out here.” He said to Max who was sulking.
“My work here is done then.” The courier said and put on his helmet before getting on his motorcycle that’s parked not far from where we stood.
Soon, he drove off leaving me to wonder what was in the documents I was just given.
“Let’s go inside and open it then.” Max urged dragging me inside the building.
We got to his office and sat facing each other. I was feeling very nervous.
“You don’t think it’s what I’m thinking, do you?” I said to Max who seemed to be in the same predicament as me.
“Nah, I doubt it.” Max said but I could tell that he was only saying that to make me feel better as there was a hint of doubt in his words.
“If.. if.. it would make you feel better, w-why don’t I.. I open it and c-check it out?” Max stuttered.
“Okay.” I barely said as I passed the file to him.
He opened it with shaky hands and pulled out the papers in it.
“It’s a divorce agreement.” He said in a broken voice.
“Divorce agreement?” I asked surprised.
“It even has his seal on it.” Max said with gritted teeth.
“His seal?” I mumbled.
I couldn’t process this new information.
Jason wants to divorce me?
Because I broke the rule of the contract?
I knew this day would come but I didn’t expect it to be this fast.
Does what we share not matter to him?
Because he’s had sex with countless people?
I gave him my dignity!
I gave him myself!
And he throws it away like this?
I felt hot tears dripping down my face like a tap turned on.
“That fool!”
“That fucker!”
“I’m gonna teach him a lesson!”
“How could he?”
Max kept yelling and screaming in anger but I was lost.
I couldn’t feel my body. It was like I was in a pool of nothingness.
I guess this is what it feels like to be in an unrequited love.
I’ve always heard stories and read books about the pain in it but I never knew that one day, I would be feeling it myself.
“Eve!!” Max snapped me out of my trance.
“Don’t cry for that jerk.” He tried to comfort me.
“He’s a fool for throwing what you both have away.”
“He doesn’t know what he’s missing on.” Max tried but it didn’t seem to be working.
The moment I heard what was written on the paper, I just started crying, I need to check it out myself.
To be sure that max is not pulling a prank on me.
I pushed away Max’s hands and held my arms to pick up the paper on the table but the moment I saw the heading, I knew it was real.
It was not a prank or a joke.
It is real because it has his stamp on it. Is he really divorcing me?
“Oh God!!” I groaned in pain.
“Why???”
“What did I do so wrong?”
“What did I do to deserve this pain?”
I groaned louder as I clutched my clothes tightly.
My heart felt like it was ripped out, thrown on the floor and stepped on.
I could hear it getting broken into pieces.
The heart is pretty fascinating if you think about it.
I heard one could die of a broken heart. How the tiny strings in your heart – chordae tendineae, would cause arrhythmia when under severe emotional distress.
The Japanese called this condition – Takotsubo which means octopus trap.
I wonder if one could truly hear a broken heart. You could hear abnormalities like arrhythmia so you can surely hear a broken heart.
Did it sound sad?, Like how if you could hear someone’s heart stop beating when someone’s heart is struggling to function properly would be sad.
Because right now, my heart is sad and I want someone to hear it.
Who could possibly pull me from this despair?
How could he?
“Eve..” Max called my name quietly seeing that I was no longer screaming but sobbing quietly.
He pulled the crumpled paper from my hands and dropped them on the table that separates us before. Then, he knelt down before me and pulled me to a hug.
“Shsss..”
“Everything will be fine.” He said soothingly.
But will everything really be fine?
Will I truly be alright?
Can I bounce back from this?
“Don’t think about anything. Just let it all out.” He said rubbing circles on my back and I cried like a new born baby.
Hope sometimes can be a cruel beast.
