Elena’s POV.
“Set the glass aside.” My voice trembled as I spoke.
“Like you said, we need to talk.”
He nodded and dropped the glass back to the table.
Almost immediately, there was a knock on the door.
“I can’t see anyone right now! Go away!” Killian gritted.
“Alpha, it’s Luna Drusilla, she wants to see you for a minute.”
Killian heaved out a deep sigh.
“It’s okay, go ahead. I will wait for you.” I mumbled.
He quickly snapped his head towards my direction, a wide smile lingering on his face. “Really?”
I nodded slowly.
“I promise you, it won’t take longer than five minutes.” He assured, standing up and hurried out of the room.
I quickly released the breath I never knew I was holding. That was close.
I felt a pang of guilt wash over me, why couldn’t I just shut my emotions out and carry out this mission? Why am I finding it extremely hard to kill Killian?
If I hadn’t interfered, Killian would be lying lifeless on the floor right now and all I would have been thinking right now was how to leave the pack unnoticed.
But I just had to develop cold feet at the last moment.
What is going on with me? At this point, I was beginning to question my ability to kill Killian, could I really do it?
I exhaled a deep breath and grabbed his glass of wine, standing up, and headed into the bathroom.
Maybe I could really do it at another opportunity, but not tonight.
I emptied the entire content of the glass into the basin and flushed thoroughly. After which I rinsed with clean water and headed back into the room.
I filled the glass yet again but this time, I couldn’t bring myself to add the poison into it anymore. Instead, I relaxed back on the couch and awaited his return.
After a short while, the door flung open and he walked in. Without saying a word to me, he grabbed the glass and gulped the whole contents down his throat. “Hosting a ball these days is exhausting as hell.” He groaned.
I couldn’t help but imagine if it had been the poisoned drink he took. The image of him crawling to the floor and struggling for his life before finally surrendering to the cold hands of death flashed through my head and I shuddered in irritation.
“Oh no.”
“What?” Killian furrowed his brows at me.
Shit! I said that out loud.
“It’s nothing, I was just thinking out loud,” I mumbled.
Surprisingly, he stood from his seat and came to sit close to me, reaching out and grabbed my hands.
“Elena… I really want to apologize for last time, I didn’t mean to go that far.” He stroked my hands gently as he spoke, sending sparks of warmth through my body.
Why does my body have to react to him this way? Why am I so gullible to his touch?
“But you have to understand that I can’t seem to control how I feel whenever I’m around you, the mate bond might be broken but believe me, I am still insanely attracted to you.”
I swallowed hard, my eyes boring into his as he continued.
“I know I promised to wait until whenever, but I can’t seem to be in control of myself anymore. I burn for you, Elena. I want you so badly. I want to reclaim what we shared.”
His words were swift and the look in his eyes displayed true yearning. It slowly getting to me and if I stayed back for longer than five minutes, I would be jumping into his arms begging him to reclaim me.
In a swift move, I stood to my feet and made to run out but he quickly beat me to it, now standing before me, blocking me away from the entrance.
“Killian please, I have to leave right now,” I mumbled, my gaze anywhere but his face.
Universe knows I’m trying to shut out my feelings for this man but it is painfully hard. Narla, my wolf, wasn’t making it any easier with the way she leaped and kicked against my wish to run away, she wanted to be in his arms, she wanted to be reclaimed by him again.
“Elena, you can’t tell me you don’t feel this too, you can’t tell me I’m the only one suffering this insane attraction that has eaten deep into me.” He growled, pinning me to the wall, his hot breath all over my face.
“It’s you alone Elena, it has always been you, and it’s forever going to be you in my life, no one else makes me feel this way,” I could see through his eyes, the authenticity of his words. The passion and admiration laced in his eyes were unmistakable.
“I know you might still have doubts, but I promise to protect you henceforth, I promise to protect what we share with my last breath, that’s because I love you with every inch of me Elena, you are my life…
“Stop!” A loud yell escaped my mouth as his words haunted my head. The more he confessed his genuine feelings for me, the more weak I became to my own feelings as well. I couldn’t let it happen. I was here for an entirely different mission, and not to get caught up in my chain of feelings.
“Let me go please.” I whimpered, tears trickled down my cheeks uncontrollably.
I saw the glint of disappointment and pain in his eyes as he slowly moved away from me, granting me access to leave.
“It’s okay if you don’t feel the same way for me anymore, it’s okay if you want to leave.”
I quickly brushed past him and headed towards the door.
Soon as my hand grabbed the doorknob, I suddenly froze on the spot, I couldn’t move any further. Narla fought persistently against me. She didn’t want to leave his arms, and strangely, I came to realize that I didn’t want to leave too.
Slowly, I turned back around and bolted into his arms at a heavy speed.
Crashing my lips on his, my tongue swiftly slid into his mouth as I moaned uncontrollably, finally letting my long-caged feelings overwhelm me.
