ENZO DE-LUCA.
“Wasn’t that too harsh? You could’ve at least taken things a little bit-”
“Shut up or I’m really going to put a pillow over your face and smother you to death.” I cut Levi shut as I leaned back on the chair with my palm over my eyes.
What have I done? Really, what have I done?
This isn’t right, I want to protect her but humiliating her like that and shooting her down when she’s done nothing but care about me is just straight up cruel.
“Ahh,” I sighed, wincing due to the pain that coursed through me, my head was aching really badly and my eyes were almost closed.
I couldn’t even see her properly when she’d come in but I could tell that she looked as beautiful as ever.
The fear, worry and relief in her eyes when she saw me made me wither inside because it’s the first time someone, a woman, had cared enough to look at me like that.
And instead of holding onto her like I wanted to, instead of taking a very strong whiff of her strawberry-like scent and recharging in her arms like I wanted to, I had straight up humiliated her.
I’d invalidated her feelings, made her feel like she was wrong to have even had an iota of feeling for me.
“I’m living up to my title, aren’t I?” I asked Levi who only laughed.
“You mean, the Devil? Arrogant son of a bitch? Heartless bastard? I guess you are.” He responded.
“Don’t think I don’t know you’re taking the chance to call me names, I’ll kill you, I swear.” I threatened even though it was an empty threat.
Moving my palm from my eyes to look at the ceiling, an eerie silence enveloped the room, it wasn’t tense but it wasn’t comfortable either.
I wanted to go after her, pull her into me and apologize for being a jerk but if I want to protect her, which I want to, this is what I have to do.
“How did you get so beaten up?” Levi’s voice seeped through my consciousness, “I don’t think a normal human being should be able to hurt you this much, what happened?” He questioned.
Sighing, I relived the moment in my head all over again. I’d gone to their turf to avenge Levi and make them pay for almost killing him but everything turned around swifter than I’d imagined.
The bastard had a picture of Maeve and even knows so much about her that he knows everything about her best friend and how Maeve was staying with me.
“That bastard had me in a tight spot, Levi,” I explained, “he was going to kill her best friend if I laid a finger on him and as much as I want to kill that son of a bitch, I couldn’t do that to Maeve.”
“Scarlett Wells is the only good thing she has in her life right now, I can’t take that away from her.” I finished with a sigh.
“So, how are you so sure that he’s not going to eventually kill this Scarlett girl anyway?” Levi asked and I laughed, it wasn’t because I was amused but because I knew he wouldn’t dare do that.
“He wouldn’t dare,” I responded, “I have his entire family under my control now but I don’t intend to hurt them, he’s the only one I want to kill.” I added through gritted teeth.
“I’ll keep his family hostage until I can secure Scarlett’s safety and have his fucking head on a platter.” I finished and again, the room fell silent.
“So, in short, you became a total jerk because you wanted to protect her and her best friend?” Levi asked and I nodded.
“Yes,” I answered, my voice low, “I love her so much I hate myself for loving someone like her.”
“She doesn’t deserve to have a good for nothing like me in her life, I haven’t done enough good deeds in my own life to have her in it.” My voice died away.
Levi didn’t say anything and I appreciated it because what I want right now is to drown and probably die in my own agony.
The door soon opened and a doctor and nurse walked in. The nurse looked terrified when she saw me but the doctor seemed to have gotten used to my appearance.
I watched as they took care of Levi before the doctor ordered the nurse to get some kits and soon, he was seeing me up.
“You know, one of these days, I’m going to kick you to the street and let you die there like a homeless dog.” The doctor said as he sewed my last open wound.
“You wouldn’t do that,” I laughed but regretted it almost immediately because my rib hurts, “you’re meant to save lives not end it.” I added.
“I’ll bear the penalty of ending your life,” he sighed as he cleaned up the wounds, “you have a broken rib, it’s a good thing I asked you to take that x-ray.” He added.
“It will heal in two to five weeks but I’m guessing you’ll be back here before then because you just can’t stay out of trouble.” The doctor said and I laughed.
He handed me a painkiller and forced me to take it in front of him before leaving Levi and I alone in the room. My head started feeling light, my vision was beginning to get blurry.
“That bastard-”
“Oh, I forgot,” the doctor’s voice and the sound of a door opening resounded in my head, “you’re going to feel drowsy, I’ll have them arrange a room for you so you can sleep.” He finished and I heard Levi laugh.
“He knows how to get you,” Levi teased and I only clicked my teeth in anger, I was starting to feel tired, “so, what are you going to do to that mafia group?” Levi asked and I smirked.
“There’s only one answer,” I forced out, my eyes were starting to slip out of my control, “I’ll. Wipe. Them. Out.” I slurred and not long after, everywhere became dark.
