CHAPTER 136
LILY’S POV
The next morning, I got up earlier than usual because of two reasons. The first was that I couldn’t sleep even after feeling better after I talked to Jane. I kept thinking about how Robert managed to get the kids’ DNA samples and run that paternity test. Does it mean he’d been seeing them long before now because I know it takes quite some time before one can get their DNA results. Robert was just full of surprises. Just how desperate can he be?!
The second was I needed to prepare the kids for school. It was hard doing it alone without Nana Mae’s help while also preparing for work. This made me realize how valuable she was and how much I needed her back. I have to get her back. I hope she agrees to come back even after what I did. I messed up big time and deeply regretted my actions.
Coupled with the kids’ attitude, the morning was torturous, one of my worst. It was clear they were still angry with me. Whenever I tried to make a conversation, they only remained quiet or gave me one-word answers.
It was tearing me apart seeing them act that way towards me. Maybe I was wrong to think they wouldn’t be angry with me for long. If it’ll make them feel any better and take their mind off Robert, I was willing to release the toys for them and lift their punishment.
With everything set, we stepped out of the house to the driveway. I pressed my key fob, and my car chirped as the headlights flashed. The kids got in. Just as I opened the driver’s side door to get in, I noticed the car had a flat tyre.
I stepped a little away from the car. Taking my sunglasses off, my brows furrowed in confusion. How had this happened? But before I could process it, another shock hit me like a punch to the gut-the front passenger-side tyre was flat too.
This prompted me to check the remaining two tyres on the other side of the car only to realize they were flat; all four tyres of the car were flat.
This left me feeling utterly confused and helpless, not knowing what to do or how the hell this happened. This car was in perfect condition as of yesterday. Ever since I got it-after my first one was wrecked the day Noah saved me from those filthy bastards that tried to have their way with me-I had barely even used it. So how is it possible all four tyres had gone flat?
The passenger door squeaked open and the kids came running to me.
“Mummy, what’s the problem?” Lila asked, noticing how worried I looked. They must be wondering why I was taking time to get into the car and drive them.
At least, I felt a little better knowing they talked to me like they weren’t angry with me anymore.
“It’s nothing serious,” I reassured, forcing a smile. “The tyres had gone bad but I’ll fix them in no time.”
“Ok. Just be quick so we won’t be late for school,” Liam said.
“I will,” I kept up with the smile. “In the meantime, you guys can wait for me inside the house. Once it’s been fixed, I’ll call you two out.”
They nodded and darted inside the house, looking cute as they did.
Once they were out of sight, I blew out a frustrated sigh, clutching my forehead. I lied. This was something serious and I didn’t know how to fix it.
Checking my phone, I saw it was 7:25 am. Only thirty-five minutes left till it was 8:00 am, the time school activities started. Which means I had just thirty-five minutes to fix this car or the kids would be late or miss school entirely.
I only had one spare tyre in the booth. If one of the tyres had gone flat, I could have changed it easily. But all four? I had no idea what to do-I was completely clueless.
If I call my mechanic now, it’ll take a long for him to arrive and have all four tyres fixed. The kids will be late. I couldn’t call a ride because Noah made me promise not to take a ride again after the taxi driver Cassandra sent tried to fly me off a bridge.
Even though some kids in the neighbourhood attended the same school as Liam and Lila, asking their parents for help wasn’t an option-they were far from helpful. In this estate, everyone was wealthy, lived in their own world, and preferred to stay out of others’ business.
I couldn’t call Noah now to ask for his help. Even though I knew he’d come in a lightning flash or send someone if I called him, I didn’t want to disturb him. He has done more than enough for me and will probably be in the gym now. I was left with no other option.
My face turned sour like I had taken lemon, the weight of this feeling of helplessness crashing down on me. I didn’t want Liam and Lila to miss school today.
Amid my frustration, a sleek black Sedan car, one of the latest models glided smoothly into my driveway, stopping just a few feet away from me like a carnon showcase.
I thought maybe Noah had somehow managed to find out the kids and I were stranded and sent someone. But as the passenger door opened, I was surprised to see Robert stepping out in style and approaching like a superhero coming to save the day.
Seriously? Can this day get any worse?
