Crystal stood up immediately and yelled a curse at the stranger who had sped off in his car.
She couldn’t believe that the man almost killed her only because she made him look like a fool in public. He was at fault in the first place so she had done nothing wrong.
“Is he blind or what?” The male who had saved her half-yelled
Crystal froze after hearing that voice, she had not even seen the face of the man who saved her life.
She turned slowly and her eyes met with his, even though it was dark, she still recognised him.
Why wouldn’t she recognise her baby’s Daddy? Logan Stewart!
She was surprised that Logan had just saved her life, this was the same man who said that he didn’t want to ever see her face again.
“Are you alright?” he asked, while cleaning the dirt off his shirt.
“Ye… yes” she stuttered
Even after three years, his presence still had that effect on her.
Logan paused for a while and stared at her face closely, that was when he realized it was Crystal.
He wanted to know if she still remembered him.
“Um… do I know you?” he asked her in pretense.
Crystal was happy and sad at the same time. She was happy because Logan didn’t recognise her, so at least she didn’t need to worry about meeting him at the castle, she expected that he would treat her like every other maid and not like the girl he loathes a lot.
On the other hand, she was sad because the man she had given her virginity to did not recognise her, the man who she has a son for, the only man that had ever seen her naked.
Yet he didn’t recognise her. It hurt a part of her but she didn’t show it.
“No… I don’t think I’ve met you before” she replied in denial
It was difficult lying straight to his face but she had to do it, she knew it was for the best to keep the past where it belonged.
Logan found it surprising that she didn’t recognise him, it’s true that he had changed a lot in the past three years but he didn’t expect her to forget about him so soon.
He wanted to remind her of the very night they spent together but when he remembered his last words to her that day, and that revealing his identity would ruin his current plans, he decided to leave things the way they were.
“Alright, I just thought I have seen you before”
Crystal noticed that some of the items she had purchased in the market had been condemned as she fell down.
She picked a few things that were still good and put them back in the shopping bag.
“Thank you for saving my life,” she said in appreciation.
If not for him, she would have been dead.
She planned to have that man arrested the next time she sees him.
“It’s fine, I can see that your items have been damaged, please tell me how much it cost so that I can replace it” Logan offered.
“No… thank you so much for the offer, but I can manage” she said, rejecting his offer politely.
“Alright, it’s late already, let me give you a ride home” he offered again.
“Please don’t bother yourself, I will be fine on my own”
Logan was surprised with her response, the Crystal that he knew three years ago, would have jumped at his offer. She’d always wanted to be around him, but now she wouldn’t even look him in the eye or come in his car with him?
“Young lady, don’t be stubborn, it’s dark already, there are no more cabs on the street and a lunatic almost killed you with his car, I think it’s best you come with me” he insisted.
Crystal was reluctant at first, but after giving his offer a thought, she saw reasons with him.
“It is just a ride anyway, it’s not like I’m getting close to him” she said to herself in thoughts.
“Alright, I will come with you,” she agreed.
For some reason, Logan was glad that she agreed. He couldn’t understand why his feelings for her had suddenly changed positively
Before he was usually irritated by her presence, he didn’t want to be anywhere close to her, but now he was concerned about her, he felt the need to protect her and he couldn’t explain why.
They both got into his car and he headed in the direction of her home.
“So what’s your name?” he asked as they rode silently.
Not like he didn’t know her name, he just wanted to call her by it without her suspecting how he knew her name.
“Eva” she replied
He was surprised that she lied to him, or is that her second name but if it isn’t then why would lie about her name.
It didn’t feel right but he was not going to argue about it or he might blow his own cover.
“Okay Eva, do you live alone?”
He did not even know why he asked that, he just found the words leaving his mouth.
“No, I stay with my stepparents,” Crystal answered truthfully.
She didn’t see the need to lie about that, she lied about her name because she did not want him to remember her.
He was a part of her past now, and she didn’t want to bring back old memories.
The rest of the ride home was awkwardly silent. Logan would steal a glance at her once in a while and she would pretend like she was too concentrated on the busy roads of California to notice him.
“There!” She said, pointing at her destination as they arrived.
Logan pulled over and she dropped off. She bade him goodbye and walked away even before he could reply.
Logan sat there watching her as she entered the little building.
“What is happening to my heart” he muttered to himself, before driving off.
