“Work, should I expect you.”
“A night out of the house might do me good. What time.”
“Seven.”Sage nodded.”See you later.”When Kim was gone she went upstairs to see the boys she heard Bruno was in their room talking to Margarita.
“I’m going out tonight don’t prepare food for me, I don’t know what time I’ll be back.”He’s going out alot and coming home late sometimes he doesn’t come home at all she’s suspecting there might be someone else the thought brought little comfort to her already broken heart. She went inside making her presence known.
“How are you feeling.”She asked him.
“Fine.”He clipped and headed for the door.
“Is there someone else.”
“What if there is. What then.”Sage didn’t know what hurt more his harsh tone or the possibility that he’s trying to forget her with someone else.
“Nothing I was just asking.”
“You slept with my brother why can’t I do the same. I have needs as a man and we’re not sharing a bed or sleeping together I need to sate my lust, and since I don’t have a wife..”He didn’t finish his sentence instead he turned and left. I don’t have a wife those words stuck in her head, he’s moved on and forgot about her and what they have. She no longer matters to him and if so what is she still doing here. She stayed with the boys to ease her pain around six she went to get ready for dinner with Kim, around quarter to seven she left the house.
“I’m glad you’re on time.”Kim said inviting her in.
“I won’t stay long.”She followed Kim into the living room.
“I have to tell you something.”Kim said.”Luca is home he just got here.”
“It’s okay why do you look so worried.”Sage asked with a smile.”He’s your husband.”
Sage saw Luca enter the living room followed by Bruno they looked shocked to see her she looked at Kim.”I didn’t know Bruno was coming I swear.”She said softly.
“Sage. How nice to see you I was just asking your husband about you.”The way he was talking tells Sage he doesn’t know anything about what happened.
“I invited her.”Kim said.”Luca called Bruno over. Dinner will get served why don’t we all retreat to the dining room.”So this is him going out tonight Sage told herself. They were forced to sit next to each other and she can tell Bruno didn’t like that one bit, she kept her distance although it was hard because she’s aware of him, the scent of his skin and cologne reminded her of how long it’s been since she’s been in his arms. Dinner was brought and for some strange reason the smell of egg flared up her nostrils causing her to become nauseous. “You look a bit pale. Are you okay?”
She nodded.”Suddenly the smell of egg doesn’t sit well on me.”
“Are you pregnant.”Luca asked, she saw Bruno froze in drinking his wine those grey eyes pinned her down.
“No!”She replied quickly.”I finished my period a week ago.”Which was a lie she hasn’t seen her period in two months but she’s never had a regular flow and the stress she’s been under it could’ve disrupted her whole cycle. The look in Bruno’s eyes told her he doesn’t believe her she averted her gaze and drank her wine. The whole dinner was awkward for Sage Bruno mostly talked to Luca and Kim she might as well not be here she kept to herself when dessert was brought he excused him.
“I honestly didn’t know Bruno was gonna be here, I wanted to call you but it slipped my mind.”
“It’s okay I understand. Dinner was delicious thank you.”
“You welcome.”
“I better get going too.”She said standing up.
“You don’t have to.”Kim told her.
“I know but I wanna be alone I’ve got alot of thinking and planning to do. I take it Luca doesn’t know.”
“No and after tonight he’ll ask me that is if Bruno hasn’t told him.”
“It’s okay. You can tell him if he asks. We’ll talk soon. Goodnight.”She hugged Kim and went home, to an cold empty bed as always Bruno didn’t come home.
She woke up not feeling well her stomach felt a bit weezy, she got out of bed and went to take a shower afterwards she went to have breakfast.”Good morning Margarita.”
“Senora. Tea.”
“Yes please. How are they treating you this morning.”She took the tea.”Thank you.”
“They quiet this morning. Shall I serve your breakfast.”
“If you don’t mind I’m starving, I wake up feeling very hungry these days.”The second Sage smelled eggs her stomach churned and she was forced to rush to the bathroom, she felt weak after getting sick and had to sit down on the floor to regain her strength a few minutes went by before she decided to get up and brush her mouth, a knock on the door brought her back to earth probably Margarita wanting to know how she’s doing.”Bruno.”She asked amazed.”What are you doing here.”He held out a small package to her.”What is that?”
“I want you to take a pregnancy test.”He said.
“What!”She gasped.”For what. I’m not pregnant.”
“Then you won’t have a problem in taking the test.”Sage stared at the box dumbfound.
“Is this about what Luca said last night, I’m not pregnant Bruno.”
“When last did you get your period. Don’t lie to me.”He warned.
“A month ago maybe two, I’m not sure but I’ve been stressing it could explain why my cycle is unregular and I told you before my period is never on time besides that I never missed a day of drinking my pill.”Even as she spoke doubts began to creep in and she’s sure Bruno must see it too, she can’t be pregnant.
“Take the test Sage.”He put it in her hand.”Or do you need me to help you.”
Her eyes clashed with his.”I don’t want to, I told you I’m not pregnant.”
“You don’t really wanna push me into a corner. Do you.”He took a step forward the lethal tone of his voice made a cold shiver course through her body.”Either you take the test or I’ll call my phycision to come and take a blood test. Your choice.”She took the test and went back into the bathroom, Sage has no idea why her hands were shaking so much while she waited for the results Bruno had bought not one but two different pregnancy tests clearly he wanted to be sure two different tests cannot lie.”Are you done?”The sound of his voice on the other side of the door made her jump, he didn’t leave nervously she checked first one then the other, she couldn’t believe it. This cannot be true, she cannot be pregnant it’s impossible. It cannot be. How did it happen. The door swung open and Bruno stepped inside.”I can tell by the disbelieving, shocked look on your face it’s positive.”
“It can’t be.”She whispered.”I took my pill on time everyday.”She didn’t bother to stop him when he took the tests.
“This proves you haven’t.”Her eyes met his they were cold, hard.”Who’s the father. Hugo.”
Sage gasped.”How could you say that. How dare you!”
“How dare I not you’ve been screwing both of us at the same time. Any one of us could be the father but how would you know.”Anger boiled inside of her she slapped him right across the face.
“Don’t you ever degrade me like that again, I know you’re hurt and I get it but it doesn’t give you the right to walk all over my honour and cheapen me like I’m some sort of whore. Hate me, despise me do and feel whatever you want but never question my values or principles.”
Silence filled the air around them.”This isn’t how I pictured to find out about your pregnancy.”He came closer to her.”This moment was suppose to be the happiest day of my life, I should be sweeping you up and spun you around in my arms due to excitement and happiness but I can’t do that because that baby you’re carrying might not be mine it could be my brother’s.”
“Bruno..”
