“In your early stages of pregnancy did the doctors find any abnormality with their heart beats.”
“No!”Sage practically shouted.”Everything was fine throughout my whole pregnancy even when they were born.”
“Is there perhaps anyone in your family that has a heart condition problem.”
Sage paled.”Heart condition. Is something wrong with his heart. How’s that possible he’s perfectly healthy when we went for his last doctor’s visit he was fine.”
“Sage I’m gonna need you to answer the question.”Camilla insisted.
“No.”Sage said again.”Not that I know of, I never had any problems growing up. Is he gonna be okay. Can I see him.”She’s close to tears.”Why is this happening to him.”She half whispered to herself. She heard how Bruno and Camilla spoke in Spanish from their serious tones she knows it’s important what are they discussing at a moment like this. If it’s about her son then she should be apart of their conversation.”What are you talking about.”She asked.
“Logan has congenital heart disease.”Sage collapsed on the nearest chair at hearing her words.”He has a hole in his heart if we don’t close it soon he can die.”A sob came from Sage.”We gonna need your consent to do the surgery immediately.”Sage couldn’t hold it back anymore she burst out in
tears. Camilla came to comfort her as her body shook with each tear.”He’s gonna be okay Sage, Logan is a fighter. Be strong cause he needs you to be.”
“Why him.”She sobbed.”He’s so small.”
“In cases like these it’s usually genetic. If one of the parents were born with a heart defect it usually turns out to be genetic and since we’ve detected it in Logan we gonna have to take a look at Liam too. They are twins. Identical. In cases such as this it’s a must.”
Sage sniffed and looked at Liam he was fast asleep in Bruno’s arms.”Could he..?” She didn’t even finish her sentence.
“We’ll see. Normally such abnormal heart beats get detected before birth I’m surprised you say they didn’t find anything. It could be it wasn’t that serious but as he got older the hole on his heart became bigger and bigger.”
“Will Logan be okay? After the surgery. Will both of them be fine.”
“Yes, I give you my word.”She took Sage’s hand in her own.”I’ll explain the surgery to both of you once I get someone to take Liam.”She disappeared and came back with a nurse who took Liam from Bruno, Sage saw the slight hesitation in him but Camilla reassured him by placing her hand on his. Sage watched helplessly as they took Liam away, then Camilla came and explain what they’ll do Sage is glad they not gonna cut her boy open all they gonna do is insert a thin flexible tube into his blood vessel at his groin that will lead up to his heart through the tube they’ll place a mesh patch to close the hole, the heart tissue will grow around the mesh sealing the whole permanently. She is happy it sounds like a easy procedure and she’s happy Logan will make a good recovery, she signed the necessary documents giving her consent for this procedure. When Camilla was gone it was only her and Bruno, he looked so desolate, lost the look of despair on his face touched her heart, he didn’t deserve to find out this way about the boys she can only imagine what he must be going through. It felt like she was in hell, Liam and Logan are her life they mean the world to her, without them she’ll die. She went to sit next to Bruno.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way Bruno.”He didn’t answer her, he wasn’t even looking at her.”I didn’t know how to tell you or where to begin.”
His silence hurt her she’s trying to explain and he’s sitting there as if she wasn’t here.”Talk to me please.”He looked at her then.
“I asked Camilla for a DNA test.”Sage flinched, he didn’t trust her enough to take her word for it, even the boys features spoke volumes.”We used protection Sage it’s only fair I make sure.”
She get where he’s coming from even she had been shocked when she had found out she’s pregnant.”Of course. I understand.”She said, she didn’t like his cold attitude towards her it was distant. It scared her. What was he thinking. Why isn’t he biting her head off like she expected him to. His silence worries her if she hadn’t been afraid of him all along. She should be now. What if he decides to take away the twins only because she kept the truth from him. Is he really than cruel.”Bruno. Liam and Logan mean everything to me if I had to lose one of them I’d die. I hope you understand that I never meant to hurt you or the boys.”His eyes held hers, but he didn’t say anything Sage got even more worried.”Bruno..”She said softly. Camilla came back holding Liam in her hands Sage stood.”And..”
“He’s perfectly fine.”Camilla said with a smile.”If he had it than it probably grew close but we didn’t find anything.”Sage wanted to take Liam but Bruno beat her to it, the gesture rose red flags but she shrugged it off. He’s their father he’ll want to form a bond with them there’s no hidden agenda behind his actions.”Are they taking any prescribed medication that we should know of before we go into surgery.”
Sage told her the antibiotics and fever syrup the doctor had given them.”They also diabetic, and allergic to dust other than that they fine.”Camilla’s eyes met Bruno but no one said anything.”How long will the surgery take.”Sage asked instead.
“Two to five hours, if we don’t have any problems during surgery it could take less time.”Sage nodded.”Okay, I’ll see you after the surgery is done.”She and Bruno had another conversation in Spanish Sage wonder why the secrecy deciding she’s had enough she confronted Bruno about what they discussed when Camilla was gone.
“What are the two of you discussing that I can’t hear. If it’s about my son I have a right to know.”He gave Sage a deadly stare well she wasn’t afraid of him especially when it comes to her kids.”I’m waiting.”
“You in no position to make demands here.”He threw at her.”The only one here who has a right to demand is me. Like why you never bothered to tell me about my sons.”He cocked a brow. Sage averted her gaze from his.”Be glad I’m not demanding anything because if I can trust me when I tell you this no one will be able to save you from me.”A warning Sage told herself it was send, loud and clear a cold chill went down her spine.”Be thankful the boys are still in your custody and once it’s proven they are my sons don’t think for one second I’ll be a part time father. I won’t miss a second of what’s happening in their lives.”
“You won’t take away my boys Bruno. I won’t let you.”
“Our boys.”He corrected.”Camilla wanted me to call the family and let them know what’s going on that’s what we were discussing. Happy.”
Sage felt stupid for putting her nose where it doesn’t belong.”And will you.”
“Not yet.”He said going to sit down.”Not until I’ve had time to think.”
“You mean to plan your next move on how you’ll get rid of me. Liam and Logan isn’t going anywhere I’m their mother Bruno. They need me.”
“This isn’t the time or place to discuss this matter. Rest assured whatever decision will follow next will be in the best interest of our sons. I’m done discussing this Sage.”He added when she wanted to argue.”Why don’t you go home and fetch some stuff for the boys anything that they will need. Liam will get hungry soon.”Sage thought he wanted to get rid of her and was about to tell him but stopped herself just in time, he has a point Liam hasn’t had breakfast yet he’ll get cranky and fussy soon not to mention he’ll need a bath, she too. Going home to freshen up and getting clean clothes for Logan is the logical thing to do.
“Call me if anything happens.”She told him.”I won’t take long.”She took Liam from him.”Can you borrow me your phone I wanna call a taxi I forgot mine at home.”
“Jorge will take you home. I already called him.”Next thing she saw the very same gentleman from last coming over to them.”Take senorita Palmer home Jorge and wait for her too.”
“I don’t need him to take me home I can call a taxi.”
“We not gonna argue about this Sage, Jorge will take you. End of discussion.”
“I will not be bossed around by you I’m not one of your employees.”She stormed off leaving him to stare after her. No Sage he thought you not one of my employees but I will make you my wife. His head felt like it’s about to explode with all the questions and thinking. Was it possible. Could Sage’s boys be his. He dragged one hand through his hair. What was he thinking, the second he’d looked at them his question had been answered they look exactly like him and Hugo when they’d been babies, even Camilla had seen that, when he’d asked for her to do a DNA test she’d looked at him as if he was crazy.
