When Issac and others arrived, they only saw Olivia standing anxiously in place. Issac quickly went forward to support her and asked, “Madam Clarkson, why are you alone? Where is Mr. Clarkson?”
Olivia replied tearfully, “It’s all my fault! When Edward opened the door, Nanci was just lying there silently on the floor. He immediately rushed her to the hospital. It’s my fault-I shouldn’t have left so easily. What if something serious happens to Nanci?”
Issac quickly consoled her, “That won’t happen, Madam Clarkson. Right now, you need to stay calm. We just need to wait for news. Mrs. Clarkson will be fine. Let me take you to the office where we can wait for updates together.”
Olivia kept muttering quietly, “It’s all my fault…”
Maggie and Jacob, following behind, exchanged glances as they thought about the recording they had just made. After some consideration, they decided to wait until Mr. Clarkson returned before playing it for him. For now, the fewer people who knew, the better.
At the same time, Edward quickly got out of the car, carried Nanci, and rushed toward the hospital, shouting, “Help! Someone, please check what’s wrong with my wife!”
Hearing his call, several doctors came out, brought a stretcher, and gently placed Nanci on it before wheeling her to a room. One doctor stepped forward and examined her carefully, then let out a sigh of relief. He had thought it might be something serious, but it wasn’t. Looking at Edward, who was pacing back and forth, he said, “Hello, your wife’s condition isn’t serious. She likely fainted due to stomach pain. I’ll put her on an IV and ask a few questions to determine the cause, but for now, we need to wait.”
Edward looked at him and asked, “Are you sure? Have you checked thoroughly? Get the best doctor to examine her again. Nothing can go wrong with her, or the responsibility will be more than you can bear!”
The medical staff quickly defended the doctor, “Mr. Clarkson, please don’t worry. He’s one of the top specialists in our hospital. Many patients specifically request him. If he says there’s nothing serious, then Mrs. Clarkson will be fine. Please trust him!”
Edward felt irritable and waved his hand, saying, “All of you, leave. I want to be alone for a while.”
Outside the room, the doctor was frustrated that someone would question his medical skills. He instructed a nurse to set up the IV and returned to his office in an annoyed mood. He called Antony to vent, but all Antony heard was that Nanci was sick. Concerned, he asked, “Is his wife okay now?”
It turned out the doctor was Antony’s friend.
He angrily replied, “Antony, aren’t you on my side? I’ve been talking so much, and you didn’t hear a word? Don’t you trust my medical skills? His wife simply fainted. I suspect it’s due to chronic digestive issues causing stomach pain severe enough to make her pass out.”
Hearing this explanation, Antony wasn’t sure how to feel about worrying for her, and just said, “That’s just Edward’s personality. Seems he really loves her. Well, that puts my mind at ease.”
The doctor was confused by this response and asked, “What are you relieved about? What’s your connection to Mrs. Clarkson? Don’t tell me… She’s a married woman! Antony, don’t do anything crazy. I know many excellent women-why don’t you come out for a drink tonight and I’ll introduce you to a few?”
Antony replied irritably, “Get lost! I’m hanging up now.”
…
Edward sat by the bed, holding Nanci’s hand, saying softly, “Nanci, please wake up. Tell me who did this to you. How dare someone target you right in my company. I swear, the person will pay his price!”
Edward closed his eyes, thinking about who would be bold enough to make a move in the company, or whether it might be an outsider who had slipped in. As he grew more agitated, Nanci’s hand moved. He quickly looked up to see that she had awakened and was looking at him, saying, “Water.”
“You want water? I’ll get it for you right away. Here, drink slowly, don’t choke.” Throughout the process, Edward was extremely careful, afraid of causing her any pain.
Seeing how nervous he was, Nanci teased, “I’m not dying. You don’t need to be so nervous. I’m really fine, just tired. My period should be coming in the next few days.”
Edward looked at her with mild exasperation. “You still have the energy to joke with me. Tell me what happened while I was in the meeting. How did you end up fainting in the restroom? Do you know that I suddenly felt uneasy in the meeting room? I sensed something had happened to you, and then I really couldn’t find you…”
Hearing his increasingly worried tone, Nanci softened her voice as she replied, “I remember showing Olivia around, and then I had a stomachache. I thought my period had come early, so I went to the restroom, but it hadn’t. By then, my stomach hurt so badly I couldn’t stand. I was too embarrassed to call Olivia in to help. Later, I heard someone talking, but I thought the woman was calling her friend, so I didn’t speak up…”
Edward asked helplessly, “Then what happened? Who locked you inside? Did you see who it was, or at least what the person looked like?”
Nanci looked at Edward innocently and shook her head. “I don’t even know when the door was locked. When I couldn’t bear it anymore, I called for Olivia, but she didn’t respond. I was afraid something had happened to her out there alone, so I used all my strength to stand up, but I couldn’t open the door… I kept calling out, but nobody answered. There wasn’t a single person passing by who could help me. In the end, I couldn’t hold on and fainted.”
Edward held her in his arms tenderly, comforting her, “It’s okay now. I’m here. I’m sorry I was late. Don’t think about it anymore. I’ll definitely find out who did this to you. I’ll make them apologize and make them pay dearly!”
Nanci didn’t know what to say. She also didn’t understand why someone would target her at the company. Suddenly, she asked anxiously, “What about GOlivia? Did you find her? Is she okay?”
“Don’t worry. Grandma is fine. Nothing happened to her. An employee saw her standing outside the restroom for a long time and took her to the lounge to wait.” Saying this, Edward remembered that the woman had claimed Nanci told her she had gone to the hospital. He quickly took out his phone and messaged Issac, asking him to investigate whether that woman had any close contact with Nanci.
Issac was in the office chatting with Olivia to calm her down when he received the message. After reading it, he looked at Olivia and asked, “Madam Clarkson, did that woman who was with you earlier say anything about Mrs. Clarkson?”
“She seemed kind-hearted, so I asked her to go check on Nanci in the bathroom. When she returned, she told me Nanci said she couldn’t bear the pain and had gone to the hospital alone. I wanted to go to the hospital too, but she said Nanci specifically mentioned not to look for her or she would be upset. So I sat in the lounge waiting for Edward to finish his meeting.”
After hearing this, Issac understood what had happened. The woman likely saw Madam Clarkson alone and had bad intentions. Then, hearing Mrs. Clarkson in the restroom, she devised a plan and locked her in there.
Olivia also noticed the inconsistencies in the woman’s statement. She clearly said that Nanci had gone to the hospital, so how could Nanci end up being found in the restroom? Olivia felt deceived, and anger rose within her.
Olivia stood up angrily and said, “Issac, take me to find that woman. Tell me the truth-did she cause Nanci to faint in the restroom? I want to confront her right now. How dare she play tricks on me! How foolish I was to believe everything she said. I’ve let Nanci down. I need to get justice for her.”
Issac helped Olivia sit back down and said, “Madam Clarkson, we don’t have any substantial evidence yet, so we shouldn’t act rashly. What if it’s all a misunderstanding? That would be difficult to resolve. Why don’t you stay here while I investigate? By then, we can figure out what to do next.”
Olivia knew it wouldn’t be good to cause a scene in the company, so she relented and sighed, “I understand. I won’t be impulsive again. Go ahead with your investigation, and I’ll wait here.”
“Then I’ll take my leave. Call me if you need anything, or you can also contact Jacob.”
After Nanci woke up, she felt bored. Looking at the needle in her hand, she frowned and said, “When can this be removed? I hate getting injections-they leave bruises…”
“I’ll stay with you until it’s finished, then we’ll remove it. I’ll ask the doctor for a fast-acting bruise removal medication, okay? Just be good. You need to take better care of yourself.”
Nanci muttered quietly, “It’s not like I wanted to end up like this.”
Edward quickly said, “It’s my fault. I didn’t protect you well enough. Just bear with it a little longer. After this is done, I’ll grant you one wish, okay?”
Nanci’s eyes lit up, “Anything? Are there things you won’t allow? Just tell me in advance.”
Edward grinned mischievously, “I’m completely yours now. What wouldn’t I allow? Except for leaving me, you can ask for anything.”
“Then I want to go to the street food stalls. I miss the flavors there. I used to go often after work, but even though I’m not busy now, I rarely go anymore. Is that request acceptable?” Nanci blinked her big eyes repeatedly, silently urging, “Say yes quickly.”
Edward looked at her adoringly and said, “Okay, but only after you’ve completely recovered. Right now, you shouldn’t eat that kind of junk food-it’s not good for your recovery.”
Suddenly, a delivery person appeared at the door, knocking and saying, “Hello, did either of you order something? Please sign for it.”
Nanci and Edward looked at each other, both with expressions of confusion.
“Don’t look at me. How could I order something in my dreams?” Nanci said.
Edward replied to the delivery person, “I’m sorry, we didn’t order anything. Are you sure you have the right place?”
The person checked his information again and said, “This is for Nanci Ross. I’m just responsible for delivering it. Please sign for it-I’d appreciate your cooperation.”
Seeing the delivery person’s awkward situation, Nanci said, “Edward, just sign for it.”
Edward reluctantly got up to sign. He then saw a basket of fruits. The two of them looked at the basket in confusion, wondering who sent it.
