The helicopter arrived urgently.
The neonatal department and other specialists were already waiting.
Seeing that Conrad didn’t know how to hold the baby, George immediately took the child into the operating room himself.
Conrad followed behind, completely lost and unsure of what to do.
He just stared at the operating room door, his nerves on edge.
“Why is this happening? Why?!”
“Why didn’t she want the child? Why didn’t she come find me while she was alive? Why did she leave the child and walk away?”
And she left the child out there in the cold, refusing to show up.
Was she angry with me?
She must have been angry.
She said it before.
Countless voices filled Conrad’s head again.
“Wake up!” George’s voice suddenly cut through the chaos.
It interrupted Conrad’s thoughts.
“The child has type A blood, a girl, and is less than 18 hours old. We can only determine that much for now. She’s experiencing respiratory distress and other complications. You need to be prepared.”
Conrad stared at him, his voice cold. “Prepared for what?”
“The baby could die at any moment…”
“No! George, please save her!”
George took a deep breath and said, “We’ll do everything we can. All the top specialists in the hospital are here.”
Old Mrs. Brown heard the news and hurried over.
She almost tripped when she stepped off the elevator.
“Where’s the baby, where’s the baby?”
“Inside, being treated.” Gordon answered.
“Such a tragedy, such a tragedy!” Old Mrs. Brown collapsed into a seat. “Is it a boy or a girl?”
“A girl.”
Old Mrs. Brown seemed momentarily disappointed but eventually muttered, “A girl is fine, a girl is fine.”
At least it would give Conrad a little hope.
Conrad wasn’t sure how he ended up waiting outside the hospital room.
All he got were repeated head shakes.
His fists were clenched, pressed against his forehead.
In that moment, he thought of every god he could imagine.
He only prayed they would spare this child.
That was the child Lillian had left him.
Hogan had just gotten off the plane and rushed over with Lionel.
Melissa almost got into a car accident downstairs. She didn’t even park properly, just left the car on the side of the road and ran inside.
“Where’s the baby? Where’s the baby?” Melissa grabbed George. “Where is she?”
“She’s not out of danger yet.”
“She’s alive, she’s alive, that’s good,” she muttered.
She cried, laughed, and watched the red light outside the operating room.
No one spoke, no one dared to say anything to Conrad.
When the operating room light turned off, everyone rushed forward.
“The baby needs to be observed for a month in the neonatal ward. If she pulls through, she’ll be fine. If not, I’m sorry.”
Conrad wiped his face. “Can I see her?”
“No, she’s being taken care of by professional nurses.”
He didn’t leave. He stood outside, looking through the glass windows, searching by the code, one by one.
When he finally saw the sign with Lillian’s daughter’s name on it, this proud and reserved man’s eyes reddened.
As his vision blurred, Conrad was shocked to feel his face.
It was tears.
He was crying.
He thought he would never cry again in his life.
Lillian, I have human emotions too.
Can you come back and see me?
His hand pressed against the glass as he looked at the tiny, fragile baby covered in tubes.
“I’m your dad. Baby, I’m your dad.” He repeated the words softly.
“God, please let her live.”
“From now on, I’ll do good deeds. I’ll never be like before.”
“I, Conrad, beg you.”
“As long as she can live, I’ll give up everything. Anything.”
“Anything!”
Melissa watched the tall figure kneeling there and turned away, crying uncontrollably.
If only he had known this would happen, why did he do what he did back then?
Now Lillian’s gone, what’s the point of saying all this?
She wiped her tears, but they kept falling.
Hogan took a cigarette, and wiped his face, and his eyes were a little red. “I’ve never seen him like this. Does this baby have a chance to survive?”
“Three out of ten.” George’s voice was hoarse.
Everyone was in a heavy mood.
If the child died, Conrad’s mental state would collapse.
It would be too easy to destroy him. All it would take was one piece of news about Lillian.
Hogan cursed, “Can’t we find anything? She came back-there must be some trace.”
“They didn’t show up on the surveillance footage.”
With just that one sentence, everyone fell silent.
“Besides, she probably didn’t want to be found.”
Conrad no longer dared to search everywhere for her.
What if Lillian got angry again?
What if she didn’t want him anymore?
At least now, he still had a daughter to hold on to, so he has the motivation to live.
As long as this child could survive.
Suddenly, Conrad stood up and started walking downstairs.
George and the others quickly followed. “Where are you going?”
“Before, when I went with Lillian to Ruth Temple, a passerby there said that if you pray sincerely, your wish will come true. It must be that I disrespected God back then, and spoke carelessly, and now the consequences have fallen on the child. I’m going to beg, I’m going to beg!”
If they made him wait here, he’d really lose his mind!
“I’ll go with you!” Melissa was the only one who didn’t try to stop him.
The Nine-Tiered Ladder-he would kneel and atone for his sins.
Melissa couldn’t keep up, and she collapsed into George’s arms, still sobbing.
But Conrad continued
His forehead touched the ground, praying earnestly.
He had walked this path with Lillian.
A lover’s road, tangled for a lifetime.
God had given him a child.
He wanted to keep her-perhaps this was the path he and Lillian were meant to walk together.
He was born under an unlucky star, despised by the world, with no father’s love and a deceased mother.
He didn’t ask for a long life or extreme wealth.
“Conrad is willing to give up everything to keep my daughter safe and healthy.”
“With my life, I will exchange for her long life!”
She was his life!
Every time he knelt, he repeated it.
Andrew followed him, praying with him again and again.
Lillian, if you knew, would you come back?
