Chapter 289: Unease

After seeing off Martin, Darnell didn’t leave the diner. Instead, he continued to sit at the table and asked a few of the Apex members to finish the chicken soup.
The four Apex members who were protecting Darnell were pleasantly surprised. They never expected Darnell to be so approachable, and their fondness for him grew.
After several unsuccessful attempts to decline, the four of them sat down together to drink soup. They chatted about the gang’s ups and downs, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
Darnell had little interest in gang fights. His interests lay more in beautiful women and freedom. However, he agreed to Luca’s request to help resolve the Apex’s predicament, so he was willing to do his part and help the Apex get through this difficult time.
Moreover, he thought that being friends with the Apex would make it easier to protect Areli in the future. Of course, his feelings towards the Apex did not mean that he fully trusted Luca.
With that thought, he patiently listened to the wild stories told by the Apex members.
The five of them ate for over an hour before Callum and a few others walked in with smiles on their faces. Before they even arrived, their voices could be heard.
“Mr. Halford!”
Darnell stood up with a smile and hugged Callum. “Callum, did you see Martin off?”
The Apex members quickly stood up to greet Callum and then stepped aside, bringing cutlery for him.
Callum patted Darnell’s back with enthusiasm. “I saw him off. The Apex might not be strong in battle, but we still have our connections.”
“I’ve sent Martin onto the ship and assigned three skilled individuals to protect him. They have already left Whiteville Port.”
“In any case, I’ve made all the necessary arrangements, and he will definitely return safely.”
He added, “The police won’t be searching for him either.”
“I also arranged for a look-alike brother who was involved in the morning brawl to lie in the hospital with bruises and bandages. It will take three to five days before anyone suspects anything.”
Callum took out his phone and showed a picture of Martin’s impersonator with a swollen face covered in bandages. It was difficult to identify him.
Darnell smiled. “As long as he isn’t discovered for three days, our plan of switching identities will be successful.”
“Rest assured, we will definitely get through these three days. By the way…”
Callum looked curious. “Mr. Halford, how did you tame this wild horse?”
“When I rescued him from prison this morning, he had an arrogant attitude and looked down on the Apex. But when I sent him off on the ship just now, he was extremely polite and even more respectful when talking about you.”
Darnell joked, “It’s simple. I just showed my strength, and he submitted.”
Callum burst into laughter and patted Darnell’s shoulder. “Alright, if you don’t want to say it, I won’t ask further.”
“But now that our first step of the plan succeeds, shouldn’t we move on to the second step? We’ve been oppressed by the Axe for so long, and I really want to have a good fight.”
Callum was an experienced member of the Apex and a prominent figure in the gang. He had experienced countless fights and killings that ordinary people couldn’t imagine.
In theory, he should have grown tired of this life long ago. But for some reason, when he saw Darnell, his dormant heart came alive like spring flowers.
He enjoyed fighting side by side with Darnell.
“Callum, you’re injured right now. Let’s take it easy on fights for now. Besides, it’s not the right time yet.”
Darnell smiled and invited him to sit down. “Come on, let’s eat something and then go watch a show. Today is the day Gisselle shines.”
Callum sat down with a look of disappointment.

At 6:30 pm at Radiant Entertainment-one of the Axe’s industries.
In the president’s office, Valentin leaned back in his chair with an unpleasant expression as he stared at a dwarf and his group.
“Are you all useless? Over thirty people couldn’t handle one Martin. Not only did you fail to kill him, but most of our brothers were injured as well, and our prison connections have been severed.”
“It’s not our fault,” the dwarf said.
The man touched his swollen face where he had been injured.
“It wasn’t that we weren’t willing to sacrifice ourselves. It was because the Apex interfered and ruined our plans. We had Martin pinned down. It was only a matter of delivering a fatal blow.”
“It was those scumbags from the Apex who ambushed us and got us beaten up by prison guards.”
The dwarf lied shamelessly without blushing, “If it weren’t for me blocking all Martin’s attacks, our brothers would have all been killed by the Apex.”
He waved his fists around a few times to demonstrate his fierceness before swiftly changing the subject. “Boss, we need justice. Otherwise, we’ll become a laughingstock.”
“As members of the Axe, being beaten up by the Apex is not only going to make Rex furious but also bring shame upon us in the underworld.”
“Damn!”
Upon hearing these words, Valentin’s face filled with anger. “The Apex is getting bolder by the day. They dare even attack us. It seems we have been too lenient towards Luca and the Apex.”
“When Rex returns, I will definitely tell him that we must strike back at the Apex with devastating force. We can no longer let them off the hook.”
He knew that there might be some exaggeration in what the dwarf said, but deep down, he understood that there was no exaggeration when it came to what they said about how ruthless the Apex had been. Even after receiving news about Luca wanting an alliance with Seven Wolves, it was still hard for him to accept that they were being outsmarted by the Apex.
How dare these losers challenge the Axe!
The dwarf was filled with excitement as he exclaimed, “Yes! Let’s kill Luca and them!”
Valentin narrowed his eyes slightly before looking at them. “Today’s mission failed again, and we received another warning from the police. Rex is very angry.”
“Although he was away for business matters, he called earlier, asking for an explanation. You will have to report to him later.”
“Remember not to embellish or exaggerate. Otherwise, you’ll end up at the bottom of the sea.”
Hearing that Rex wanted an explanation from them made them nervous. They knew that if they didn’t give an honest account of what happened earlier or if Rex found out they were lying about their involvement in Martin’s attack it would lead them to an even worse fate.
After some time passed by, Valentin spoke softly, “Tell him everything truthfully.”
“Otherwise… you know the consequences.”
The dwarf and his men nodded repeatedly. “Understood! Understood!”
Then they left Valentin’s office as instructed.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door again. A seductive woman wearing stockings called out. “Boss, two candidates are here.”
Valentin’s previously dark and angry expression immediately transformed into a broad smile upon hearing it. “Let them come in.”
Five minutes later, Valentin sat cross-legged with great interest as he looked at two college girls standing before him.
These two girls were art students at the University of Whiteville who were introduced by Valentin’s sister-in-law.
They had tall figures and delicate faces that exuded youthful charm that men liked.
But for some reason, when he looked at these two delicate girls, there was a sense of unease deep inside Valentin’s heart…
