Kamara’s POV
I opened my eyes to the stream of sunlight coming directly into the room. It took me a while before my gaze finally adjusted. I roughed my hair up drowsily as I looked around me. I was dressed in my nightwear and in the room.
I was confused for a split second before everything that happened last night came flooding my head. My face flushed as I covered my face with my palm. I couldn’t believe I had consented to actually having sex in the car. That’s any woman’s fantasy.
A small giggle escaped my lips as I swung my feet down from the bed, looking at my reflection in the mirror. Diego had cleaned me up against last night and washed me up and one thing I had to admit this new prescription made me see much more gentle sides of him.
Even if it was just because of the baby, in order to reduce my stress level, it wasn’t bad to have him care for me once in a while like he did both times we’ve had sex now.
I walked down towards the kitchen and I could hear the clinking of glasses and sizzling of something. The entire place smelt divine and I could only guess Diego was making something for breakfast. I skipped happily towards the kitchen and I could see the counter set with a few food.
“Good morning.” I greeted and he looked over his shoulders with a small smile. He was wearing anything besides joggers and an apron. I could see the full view of his back muscles and scratch marks designing them all. It made what we did last night flood my memory again. The tips of my ears went hot and I faked a cough.
“Good morning. Great night?” He asked and I nodded, taking my seat to dig in. And just as they smelt, they tasted heavenly. I could get used to eating his meals on a daily basis and not get tired of them.
“We’ll be picking Nana up this morning after breakfast.” He informed me and I nodded, focusing fully on my meal. He slid over a glass of milk and I downed it instantly. “Eat slowly, the food isn’t disappearing. Your medications are over there, don’t forget to use them.”
“Thanks.” I smiled softly.
Diego pulled up outside the hospital after an hour. I exhaled slowly. The events with my family last night have replaced my blissful morning experience and I had to be reminded that the problem hasn’t been solved yet.
Diego parked, and before I could open the door, he was already stepping out, walking around to my side to open it for me.
I let out a small sigh before stepping out. “You didn’t have to.”
“I know.” He said, waiting for me to step out before shutting it behind me.
I followed him into the hospital, hoping I didn’t come across Ciara for any reason at all which I thankfully didn’t. As we stepped into Nana’s room, I could hear cheerful laughter. Chantelle was sitting at the edge of Nana’s bed, laughing at something the older woman had said. The sight made me smile.
“Well, look for finally decided to show up after disappearing with her man.” Chantelle teased when she spotted me.
Nana’s eyes brightened when she saw me. “Kamara, darling.”
I moved closer, taking her hands. “How are you feeling, Nana?”
“Like I’ve been shot.” She deadpanned
Chantelle snorted.
“Nana”
“I assure you, darling, I’m fine.” She assured me, squeezing my hands gently. “And I’m ready to go home. I can’t take another night in this place. No matter how VIP the ward is, the food is still horribly hospital food.”
“Come on, Nana. It isn’t that bad.” Diego replied calmly, personally parking all her bags. “Of all things, that’s what you have to complain about?”
She shot him a look. “What else am I supposed to complain about? The bullet shot?”
Diego exhaled through his nose, but I caught the slight twitch of his lips.
A few min later, a nurse walked in with a wheelchair. And after a little paperwork, we finally got Nana out of the hospital.
The ride back home was very lively as Chantelle and Nana laughed and talked about random things in the backseat while I just sat next to Diego who was focused on driving but I could tell he was listening in on their conversation, mostly about how much Nana hated being cooped up in the hospital.
“I told you, Diego, I don’t need a nurse hovering over me twenty-four-seven,” she grumbled.
“You’re getting one anyway,” Diego replied without looking at her.
She huffed. “You’re as stubborn as your grandfather was.”
“That’s why I’m still alive,” he said dryly.
I watched them with a smile. For all of Diego’s coldness, he cared about Nana. Deeply. It was one of the few things I admired about him.
When we arrived at the mansion, Chantelle helped in getting Nana settled in her bedroom, making sure she had everything she needed. After that, she pulled me out into the garden.
“So what happened yesterday?” She asked, folding her arms across her chest. I let out a sigh as I bit my nails. I didn’t even know what to do. I knew they would have had an idea of what might be going on and would be on my neck again very soon.
“Seriously?” Chantelle sighed as I told her everything that had happened. “I would never have believed your siblings would stand against you like that. I mean I don’t have siblings but are they that jealous?”
There was no way it wouldn’t be shocking to her. I mean, it was shocking to even me. They didn’t even believe me when I spoke about her having a billionaire husband and of course, why would they? I had just lied to them, but for my siblings to stand with Ciara that snake? It was unbelievable.
“So what are you going to do now? They haven’t called you back. What if they still insist on you going back home? Won’t it cause an issue with Diego?” She asked and it was true. And I knew Diego never joked with his threat. I mean, she’s a Mafia boss. He is who he is.
Before I could say another word, I heard footsteps approaching. I turned to see Diego standing not far from where we were, jingling his keys. “I have to go.”
I turned to him. “Where? I thought you said you’d be home today.”
“Business.” He said simply, turning to leave.
Of course.
He had “business”.
