Chapter 38: confession

Book:Alpha Kai's Revenge Published:2025-3-4

Verena paced the floors of her room, her mind in deep disarray.
It had backfired. Everything she did had backfired. The clever plans, the newly developed drugs, the set up, the poisoning, each and everyone of them backfired.
She had thought that by removing Karen, the one blockage in her way that she could have Kai all to herself. She would be reinstated in his life as the one , and soon she would marry him and be crowned Luna.
A grave misconception.
It now seemed that when Karen was around Kai paid even more mind to Verena. At least back then Kai hadn’t been obsessed with the idea of finding a run away slave. But now, everything had changed for the very worst.
The weeks had rolled off and before Verena knew it, five months had passed. And in those five months all she saw was Kai getting colder and colder. He no longer spoke to her. He no longer allowed anyone in his suite, not even Nicolas. He poured himself entirely to the pack duties and searching for Karen.
Five months and he hadn’t even as much as touched her.
Verena really believed she could try her luck. Try to seduce him, try to get him to bed her. But all of her efforts proved in vain. The last time he had sent her out of his suite with a stern warning.
“I can’t believe this,” She mumbled to herself. “If I had known it would be so much trouble…”
She trailed off, not daring complete her sentence.
She couldn’t ask he father for help this time. This was personal, this had to do with Kai. Nothing her father could do with help. For all she knew, Karen had probably died in a ditch somewhere, forgotten by the world
For crying out loud it had been five months! And the most trained warriors couldn’t find her anywhere.
Verena became more and more frustrated as the days went by, wishing desperately that Kai was her mate. If they were fated mates then maybe she wouldn’t have to suffer through all this right now. If he was her mate she would have been Luna long ago, her lifelong dreams finally coming through.
She couldn’t understand why Kai was still so interested in that servant. He didn’t even know the favour Verena had done him by taking away that manipulative bitch. If she had stayed who knew the kind of nefarious plans she would have plotted.
This was the daughter of Zeke Winterblood for heaven’s sake!
Verena groaned, stomping her feet in frustration. She decided she wasn’t going to stay in her room forever, bemoaning her fate.
She made her way out of her room and headed to the throne room. She would try her luck, no matter how bad it was.
She walked through the halls, rehearsing what she would say over and over in her head. All she had to do was make Kai see that chasing after Karen was futile, completely so.
She turned down a corner, bumping face first into someone’s chest. The tug in her heart told her who it was before she got a look at his face.
“Verena,” Nicolas’ soft voice said. She raised up her head and looked at him.
“Hello, Nicolas.” Verena said.
She had been doing her best to avoid Nicolas due to certain reasons. But for some reason too, they kept bumping into each other.
“Where are you off to in such a hurry?” Nicolas asked, his eyes sweeping over her form.
“The throne room.” She said.
He shook his head. “Well good luck with that.”
She nodded. “That bad huh?”
“Yeah.”
Verena sighed heavily. All she wanted to do was spend time with the man she loved. Was that too much to ask for?
“Bye, I’ll see you later” She said to Nicolas, already hurrying off without waiting for his response.
As she approached the throne room doors, she felt her heart start to hammer eratically in her chest. The guards on both sides opened the door and ushered her in. She walked in slowly, her heels clicking on the tiles.
Kai looked up at her, his blue eyes burning.
“My alpha,” Verena said and bowed before him. “Please, I request an audience with you.”
“Verena” his deep voice rumbled through the throne room. “What is it you want?”
“A moment of your time.”
“You have a moment right now. ”
“Not this kind of moment.” She said a bit shyly. “A personal moment, alone with you.”
“I do not wish for that to happen, Verena. Make yourself useful elsewhere.” Kai replied coldly. The chill on his voice making her shiver.
She had never seen him this cold before. Even when her father had rescued him and he had a long distant look in his eyes, it wasn’t this bad. It hurt Verena even more, the fact that he was like this because of that slave.
If she could, she would kill that slave herself.
“My alpha,” Verena said, thinking of another way to get what she wanted. “Pardon me for saying but … she is probably dead by now.”
“Do you have a body to prove that?”
“No… but it’s been five months with no lead. Plus, she is Zeke’s daughter. Her death is….”
“I will strangle her myself.” Kai said darkly. “I will find her and strangle her.”
“My alpha please let her go!” Verena cried. “She’s hurting you, even when she’s not physically here! She’s an evil person, manipulative and evil! It’s a good thing she’s gone!”
Kai watched her, his expression unreadable.
“Remember how her father caused you so much pain? And now she is doing the exact same thing. Continuing his legacy even in her absense!”
She noticed how he tensed up, the mention of Zeke making his mood shift. Verena smiled to herself, he plan working.
“I can’t bear to see to like this…” Verena said softly. “It’s almost like someone else in your place! She’s gone, my alpha. That’s in the past. Why won’t you…”
“Get out of my face.” He growled at Verena.
She stood her ground, knowing how risky it was. Being fed up with all of it. Having enough of it.
“I can’t do that, my alpha.” She replied. “I will not continue to stand by and watch you destroy Yourself over a slave.”
Kai rose from the throne and stalked his way up to her. Each step he took reminded her of a vicious predator about to strike it’s prey.
In this case she was the unfortunate prey.
Verena held her ground even though she was shaking in fear. She looked at Kai dead in the eye.
“You won’t leave?” He asked. Her.
“Not until you see my point.”
He backhanded her. The sound of it echoed through the throne room. Verena gasped, her head flying to the side with the impact of the blow.
She raised her eyes and looked at Kai. Tears filled her eyes, tears of pain, tears of the painful backhand. Her cheek was starting to swell and throb painfully.
“If I had known she was this much trouble I would
“have killed he instead
