Saying such words was tacit permission for him to waver between two women.
Nelson frowned, not expecting her obsession with him to reach this point.
“Maeve-”
“Nelson, I’m tired and want to rest. Please leave,” Charlotte forced a smile that looked worse than crying.
Outside the hospital room, Sienna had been waiting. Seeing him come out, she anxiously asked, “How is Maeve?”
Nelson rubbed his temples, “She’s asleep, I should go now.”
Sienna seemed to have aged overnight. She nodded and said, “Nelson, please don’t mind. Let’s make up for the love Maeve has missed over the years.”
She had attempted suicide, and Sienna was truly scared.
Facing her plea, Nelson’s frown deepened. He wanted to say something but ultimately remained silent.
Outside the hospital, Anthony had been waiting for a long time. “Miss Marsh was picked up by Jamir.”
Nelson closed his eyes to rest. As expected, she was disappointed when he didn’t show up. It was better that she left.
In the coming days, there would be many more disappointments for her.
Without a response, Anthony couldn’t help but say, “Maybe if you explain now, she might understand.”
Nelson didn’t reply. After a while, his private phone rang. The caller ID showed Bianca. He took a breath and adjusted his voice, “Bianca.”
The person on the other end quickly said something, causing Nelson’s expression to change drastically, as if a storm was approaching.
…
“These are the companies working with Lucia,” Joaquin said as he hurried in, gulping down an entire bottle of water.
Callie quickly reviewed the list he handed over. It was detailed, clearly indicating which group each company belonged to.
The Oconnor Group wasn’t on the list. It seemed Nelson had really cut ties.
The other companies didn’t reveal much either. Callie frowned, wondering if her investigation direction was wrong.
Joaquin noticed the bandage on her head. “What happened to your head? Did Nelson hit you after the art exhibition?”
He knew about the art exhibition because he had informed her which painting Charlotte had copied.
Callie shook her head. “Which company owns Star E-commerce?”
Joaquin glanced at it. “I don’t know. It’s an independent business.”
“Help me find out who the owner is.” Lucia’s main partner was this company.
Joaquin agreed but then worriedly said, “Sis, Nelson has been at the hospital these past two days… Charlotte is using a sympathy ploy.”
Callie gave him a look. “A sympathy ploy only works if someone is willing to fall for it. He’s willing, so there’s nothing more to say.”
Joaquin wanted to say something else but received a phone call at that moment. After listening for a while, he seemed surprised.
After hanging up, he muttered to himself, “It looks like this sympathy ploy won’t last long.”
Callie didn’t hear him clearly and continued typing on her keyboard.
“Sis, my contact at the hospital just told me that the Oconnor family’s grandpa is dying, and Nelson is by his side. It seems he can’t take care of Charlotte now.”
Joaquin spoke lightly, as if watching a show. He didn’t notice that Callie’s typing had stopped.
She opened her eyes slightly and looked at him in disbelief. “What did you just say?”
Joaquin was startled by her expression. “I… I said that the Oconnor family’s grandpa is dying, and Nelson…”
Before he could finish, Callie stood up and strode out. But after just a few steps, her legs gave way, and she had to lean against the wall to avoid falling.
