She took the initiative to hook her arms around his neck, her eyes seductive. “Stay here today. You’ve been missing for days already; one more day won’t matter.”
He lowered his head, their foreheads touching. “Okay.”
But then his phone rang again, this time it was Sienna. Seeing the caller ID, Callie didn’t speak for a moment.
Nelson frowned but answered the call.
Sienna’s voice was crisp and clear. “Nelson, I’m begging you.”
Callie clutched the hem of her clothes, her whole body cold.
After hanging up, Nelson picked up the umbrella and held it over both of them, offering it to her.
“If you get wet, take a bath when you get back. Don’t catch a cold.”
Callie didn’t take it.
“She’s in critical condition. I have to go.”
Callie looked at him. “When I was in Anbusea, I was also in critical condition. It wasn’t a big deal.”
Nelson placed the umbrella handle into her palm. “Listen, her health is weak, and she has no will to live. I have to go.”
“Are you a doctor?”
Callie took a deep breath and asked forcefully, “Do you have to leave today?”
He lowered his eyes. She was trembling all over, her gaze icy cold.
Nelson squeezed her hand, unable to bear seeing her like this. “I’ll just take a look and come back tonight.”
“Nelson!” Callie’s voice trembled too. “If she really wanted to die, she wouldn’t wait for you to go. She’s done all this to bring you back to her side!”
“You just hugged me, and I stayed. Now I don’t want you to leave. Will you stay?”
Nelson frowned. “Oconnor Group still has cooperation with the Ellison family. Besides, her suicide attempt started because of us. I can’t just abandon her.”
Callie found his words unbearably harsh and screamed, “She has already become Maevelyn! The Ellison family lacks nothing. You can compensate her with money or reputation. If necessary, I’ll apologize to her personally. But you can’t leave.”
She was almost at the point of desperation, unwilling to see him favor Charlotte any longer.
The car Anthony arranged was already waiting at the alley entrance. Nelson glanced at it and his tone grew heavier. “Callie, understand me, this is the last time.”
Callie felt a chill all over, her hand slipping weakly. She knew she couldn’t stop him.
Nelson walked past her into the rain and got into the back seat of the car.
The engine roared to life before Callie snapped out of it. She dropped the umbrella and ran after him desperately, but the car had started moving. She chased it in the rain like a fugitive.
“Nelson!”
She wanted to tell him that she was Maevelyn, the girl who grew up with him, not Charlotte.
Callie ran and cried simultaneously, tears mixing with the rain. Never had she wanted so desperately to tell him the truth.
But the car sped away too fast for her to catch up. At the corner, a small stone tripped her foot, and she fell heavily to the ground-
“Ugh-”
Her forehead hit the ground, blood oozing out, quickly washed away by the rain.
The car screeched to a halt.
Through her blurry vision, Callie saw a figure get out of the car and run towards her, squatting in front of her. “Callie!”
She couldn’t make out what he was saying; she only remembered being lifted up and quickly placed into the car, voices speaking around her, but she couldn’t comprehend any of it.
Her mind was a tangled mess, unable to think clearly.
Overwhelmed by immense sorrow, she finally lost consciousness.
