I picked up some fruits and gently put them in basket. Everywhere I turned I saw something that looked delicious and I grabbed it.
Christian was pushing the cart around, throwing things that we didn’t need at all. He was aloof and absent minded. I stopped to watch him.
He picked up a yellow pictured frame and dropped it in the cart. I laughed and went to meet him.
“We don’t need all these things” o told him.
He looked down at the cart and his expression told me that he didn’t remember putting most of the items.
“Wait here, I’ll put them back” I told him trying to take the cart from him but he shook his head.
“Don’t worry, I’ll just buy them and throw them out” he said.
“Seriously?” I asked him with a raised brow.
I wasn’t raised to throw valuable things away. The thought disturbed me.
He let go of the cart and I handed him the fruits basket.
I trailed back and started to keep the items he picked.
“What you did for Kylee is amazing” I told him.
He shot me a wonderful smile but it was short lived, there was something bothering him.
“I couldn’t leave her there. What her mum did for me was, remarkable. She was the only teacher that didn’t trip me off, I hated myself for not keeping up with her. I never knew she did. Kylee wouldn’t have gone through a second of that if I was aware ”
He had a really soft interior very compassionate and empathic. I was proud that he’s the man I chose to spend the rest of my life with.
He went quiet again.
I was about to put the last item back when he spoke.
“I think you should keep that ” he said.
“A baseball bat, what am I going to use this for?”
His features were hard and smiling.
“While we are at the house, we sleep in separate rooms. Imagine if someone, maybe Josef or someone else, tries to get in your room at night, you hit him as hard as you can”
I almost bursted out in laughter. He must have seen the look on my face because he shook his head and sighed.
“I’m not joking ” he said.
I nodded at the coldness of his tone of voice, something was definitely wrong.
I tried to replay the events of today. Was he still mad at me for wanting him to chase me in morning.
I raised the bat, it was heavy and thick, it could cause serious damage.
It was a weapon.
I shook my head.
“I don’t think I want it” I said trying to put it back on the rack.
“You always do as I say, remember?” He asked me, his voice was low and cold, it sent shivers down my spine.
He was reminding me of my promise.
I put the bat in the cart and tried to hide my shaking hands behind my back.
“Are you okay?” He asked me immediately, his voice was soft and tender.
“I’m fine” I told him.
He held me and pulled me close, I was buried in his chest and his hands wrapped around me, holding me tight.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry”
“What’s wrong?” I asked him, I couldn’t pull away from him. His colognes was doing too many things to me, it made melt into a puddle in his arms, it was a good his grip on me was protective, he wouldn’t let me fall.
“Nothing” he said.
“Then why are you acting so grumpy?”
He chuckled.
“Are you sure everything is alright?” I asked pulling out to look at him.
He nodded and smiled a little.
“Just keep the bat beside your pillow tonight and lock the door and windows”
Just like that, he was back to his paranoid mode.
I nodded and pushed the cart. He followed carefully behind me and I could tell he was still brooding over something.
Two young women were standing still and staring at Christian in awe, it was something I was already used to seeing. I wanted to glare at them and yell that he is mine but instead I shook my head.
“Your mum asked me to come with her to pick gifts for your birthday” Christian said and I froze.
“Wait, she asked you? She was willing to give me a present?”
A funny look crossed his eyes but he smiled and nodded.
“She was. She wants to make sure she gets your birthday gift right this time” he said.
I felt happiness bubble inside me. A kind of happiness I only felt when Christian showed me how much he loved me. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe that my own mother would stir up such emotions from me.
“See, she isn’t so bad after all. I knew it” I said.
I blinked back tears and cleared my throat.
I blinked back tears and cleared my throat.
“Have she told you what she is planning on getting me?” I asked him and he bit his bottom lip, it made me want to kiss him but instead I schooled my thoughts to remain on my mother.
“No, not yet. But I’ll make sure it’s something you love”
“Nah. Don’t influence her decision, pleay. Let her get anything, even if it’s a pencil it would be greatly appreciated and treasured”
Christian stared at me, too many emotions crossed his eyes I wasn’t able to keep track. He turned away and started walking.
“I won’t”
“Promise?” I asked him and he stopped walking, I was behind him so I couldn’t see his expression but I heard his voice come out forced.
“I promise, Jenna”
Great, he would never go on his promise.
I felt like a little child again, I wanted to hop up and down. It felt funny carrying just the bat in the cart so I looked around and started picking some things.
I picked some lounge pants for Christian, when I looked into his closet earlier, it was filled with suits. I picked some sundress for myself. They didn’t have anything fancy and it made it more interesting, I was buying the clothes not because I wanted people to see them on me but because I wanted to be comfortable. Never before have I done something so… Unfashionable, fashion was my life, everything I wore stirred up emotions, it was like art.
I didn’t know if anyone had noticed yet, but my belly was showing some swelling already in the lower part. There dresses would be a good concealer before I spill the news.
