Elena’s POV.
“What do you mean by you “calling in and saying they are not in school?” Marie screamed at the top of her voice as she looked at me.
“I just spoke with Mr. Heather and he said a man introduced himself as my brother, and he said he was going to drive them home.” I responded as my heart raced fast.
I just couldn’t find a better positive explanation for this. I couldn’t let any harm come to my little angels.
“How could Mr. Heather be that careless? Why didn’t he call in to confirm if the man’s story was actually true? How could he just give out your kids to a complete stranger?” Marie growled angrily.
Her heart also raced fast and wild as she paced about in the room. “I don’t want any harm to come near my godchildren else, I will break hell loose.” She panicked even more.
“They are an hour late.” I whimpered as I stood upright, my eyes fixed on the wall clock and I knew absolutely nothing to do.
“What proof did the stranger even show Mr. Heather to make him give my little adorable angels away?” Marie snarled.
I paused for a while as I recalled him mentioning the man who showed him a picture of us.
“A picture of us!?” I gasped as I felt this sharp excruciating pain dig deep into my stomach as I fell down on the chair with my fingers inside my hair.
It felt like my head was going to explode anytime soon, as I couldn’t just guess right who the stranger was or the fate of my two little adorable angels now.
“A picture?” Marie asked in a confused tone as she looked at me.
“Yeah, a picture. He said the man showed him a picture of us and said that it was three years ago, and he had just arrived in New Kingston.” I said as I panicked.
I couldn’t recall anybody I had taken a picture with since I came to New Kingston to start life all over again.
“Three years ago? A photograph?” Marie mumbled as she looked at me and I could tell that she was also lost too.
I couldn’t hold back myself as tears swelled up my eyes. All I could think of was one negative conclusion to another.
“But who would want to hurt my two innocent babies? They have done nothing wrong.” I whimpered as I broke down.
“This was why I never wanted to stay back. I knew it wasn’t going to be safe anymore for me and my little babies as far as Rex had tracked us down. Two days of being back in my life and then this?” I cursed as my tears messed up the light makeup I had done.
The doorbell rang as I rushed to see who it was. All I wanted to see was my two little adorable angels standing there unharmed, but then, I had seen the face of the last man I ever wanted to see.
“How did he trace me down to my apartment? Was he now monitoring my every move?” I cursed within as I wiped off my tears.
“What do you want from me, Rex?” I growled angrily as I tried shutting the door, but then, he held it with his right hand.
I got it already. He had more strength than me, but why in God’s name was he here? “What exactly does he want from me?” I shrugged in pain, still pushing the door hard.
“I brought back Kanu and Kiana.”
I opened the door as I gave him a dirty slap on his face as I looked at him.
“What do you want from us, Rex? Leave me and my kids alone, please!!” I growled.
“And where are they?” I snapped, paying no interest to whatever he had to say about picking them up from school.
“In the car.” He said calmly as I walked past him and I saw them, hiding inside the car as they peeped through the car glass.
They knew I was definitely going to punish them for following a stranger again, but right now, that wasn’t what I was thinking about.
The joy of seeing them safe was everything that mattered at that point in time.
“I never wanted to go with him, mummy!” Kanu mumbled as he kept those pulpy eyes again.
They were fond of giving me that face whenever they were trying to avoid me scolding them.
I carried them both in my hand as I walked back in.
“Bye, Rex.” Kiana waved at him happily as we walked past him.
He remained quiet as he looked at me. I felt stupid for slapping him, but then, I couldn’t just control the emotions that rushed in at that point.
And there was no way I was going to apologize for it either. I shrugged as I shut the door against him.
Marie, not wasting a single second, rushed me as she carried them from my hand, hugging them tight as she sobbed softly.
“Are you okay, aunty Marie?” Kanu asked.
“Yes I am, baby.” She responded as she printed kisses on them. “I was just worried about you both.” She snapped with a broad smile now trying to lighten up the room.
“How many times do I have to tell you that you shouldn’t talk with strangers, take things from strangers or even get comfortable around strangers?” I scolded them as I rolled my eyes.
“Mr. Heather said we could go with him and he also said we should extend his warm greetings too.” Kanu responded in an apologetic tone as he played with his fingers.
“But uncle Rex said he is your very close friend and he is also a nice man. I wish he was my daddy!” Kiana mumbled with a smile as she brought out the last chocolate bars in her pocket as she looked at me.
Her last wish struck me as I looked away, trying not to break down before them.
“How could I tell them that he was their biological father?”
