For a moment, Sara thought the white wolf was going to finish what the black rogue had started.
But instead of tearing her throat apart, the wolf bit her just enough to taste her blood, and then threw his head back and howled.
One word reverberated in her mind.
Mate.
It was the white wolf’s voice, in her mind. She blinked, staring at him as if he were a mirage.
He was declaring that she was his mate.
But how…
Edna whimpered happily, and Sara felt a strange warmth overwhelm her.
Mate.
This strange white wolf was her mate. But how? Just the previous day, she had found out that Christian was her mate. He too had felt the bond between them, so she couldn’t have been mistaken. So how could this one too be her mate?
While she tried to sort through her confusion, Edna was busy trying to get closer to him, craving more of his touch. They had been saved by their mate. Christian had tried to kill them, but this one had saved them from the rouges.
Sara tried her hardest to rein in Edna. If she let her be, she was certain her wolf would throw herself at him unabashedly.
“Why are you stopping me?” Edna whimpered, impatient. “He is our mate!”
“What if he doesn’t want us?” she questioned. She wasn’t going to make the mistake of entertaining thoughts of a happy ending with him, not after what happened with Victor and Christian. But, even her rational thoughts weren’t enough to get rid of the warm feeling spreading throughout her body. A part of her wanted to do exactly what Edna wanted-get close to him, surround herself with his heat.
“He saved us! Of course he wants us,” Edna pointed out.
The white wolf shifted forms, and standing before her, now, was a handsome, tall guy. Sara’s mouth went dry as she stared up at his naked body. He was so, so gorgeous. Like an untouchable noble, of the kind of beauty you only ever heard of but never got to see.
And as she stared at his naked form, her body reacted, wanting to be close to him, to complete their bond.
She lifted her eyes from his body to his face. Red penetrating eyes stared back at her, stealing her breath. She had never met a werewolf with red eyes before.
But they were so beautiful, that she didn’t think twice as she shifted forms and came to her feet in front of him.
“Your eyes are so beautiful,” she told him, unable to take her gaze away from them. She felt like she could stare into them forever and never look away.
Levi frowned as the she-wolf stared into his eyes as though in a trance. Did she say they were beautiful? Beautiful? Werewolves often took one look at his eyes and went cowering. But she… She seemed as if she wanted to reach out and touch them.
“You are not afraid of them?” he asked.
Her brow creased as she shook her head. “No, why would I be? Why would I be afraid of such beauty?”
Levi couldn’t believe it. First, to find out she was his mate, and then that she wasn’t afraid of him. She was different from everyone else, and he was glad she was his.
A warmth he had never felt before, and not because of the mate bond, reached into his heart. Because no one had ever looked at him with such adoration, such awe.
While the two mates stared at each other, the remaining rogues sensed the aura coming from Levi and decided it was in their best interest to make themselves scarce. He had killed their friend with one blow, and he was without doubt a strong Alpha. If they attacked him and threatened his mate, he would undoubtedly work through them in a flash.
They ran away, not wanting to be his next victims.
“Put on your clothes,” Levi instructed as he too reached for his and pulled them on.
Sara had wrapped her shirt around her leg when she had shifted, and she pulled it on. She hadn’t been able to bring her jeans along, and they were strewn somewhere on the forest floor behind her.
When they were dressed, him fully and she only in her shirt, his eyes appraised her, full of disapproval. Her heart sank a little. Did he not find her attractive?
Levi looked around to make sure the rogues were gone, and then focused on his mate. The shirt she wore fell to the middle of her thighs, the white fabric accentuating her curves and leaving way too much skin uncovered. If the other werewolves had still been around, he would have ensured they didn’t live to remember seeing her naked.
He wondered whether she paraded this way in front of other male wolves, shamelessly. The thought of her being close to another male made his blood boil.
“Uh, what’s your name?” she asked, her gaze turning hesitant as her fingers tugged at the hem of her shirt, as if trying to cover more of her exposed thighs.
“Where are your pants?” he questioned back.
She blinked, and then pointed behind her. “I…I was in a hurry and left them behind.”
“You should never expose yourself to other werewolves like that,” he told her.
She gave a short laugh. “I was busy running for my life. Trust me, that was the last thing on my mind.”
His red eyes narrowed. Did she think he was joking? “Promise me,” he demanded.
She blinked again. “What?”
“That you’ll never allow other males to see your nakedness. And as long as you are my mate, you cannot have sex with other men.”
Sara was struck speechless as he stared at her sternly, waiting for her answer. They hadn’t even introduced themselves yet and he was already ordering her around?
“Excuse me?” she asked.
“Are you a virgin?”
She took a step back. Where was he going with this?
He took a step towards her and grabbed her arm. “You are, right? I swear to the Goddess, if any man has touched you before me, I’ll skin him alive.”
His tone was enough to tell her that he was serious. Enough to push her initial feelings of happiness aside. Now, she was pissed. He hadn’t even introduced himself to her yet and he thought it was okay to start speaking to her like that?
“That’s none of your business,” she snapped, pissed off. Just because he was her mate didn’t mean he could order her around. Or start asking her personal questions that were none of his business.
His nostrils flared, his crimson eyes seeming to come alive with fire. “You are my mate, and I will not let you-”
“Let me?” she scoffed and huffed loudly. It really was too good to be true, wasn’t it? Just when she had thought she had met a mate who was worthy. A mate who would accept her and treat her well. Sure, he had saved her life. But if he thought he could control her just because they were fated, he had another thought coming. “Who do you think you are to come out of nowhere and start telling me what to do?”
“Calm down,” Edna whispered.
Sara ignored her as she glared at the man defiantly.
Edna sighed dreamily. “He’s so handsome even when angry, isn’t he?”
Sara pressed her lips together. Usually, Edna was the one fuelling any fight they got into. Not this time.
Okay, yes, the guy looked like a fallen angel, with skin whiter than she had seen before, those unbelievable red eyes, and blond hair that was almost as pale as his skin.
Any other time, she would be busy being all dreamy with her wolf.
But not when he was being a controlling asshole.
Levi was not sure how to react to the she-wolf’s outburst. She had first shocked him by not being afraid of his eyes. Now, she was shocking him by talking back to him. Not many dared, and those who did, regretted it.
“I should have known you are just another arrogant bastard who thinks he owns the world,” she snapped, then walked past him and stomped angrily into the forest, heading towards the campus.
He blinked, his hands closing into fists. Did she just tell him off?
