Evelyn, however, smiled at her and walked toward her with confidence. “Long time no see.”
Daisy, hiding behind her sunglasses, didn’t even bother to look at her. Irene tried to step between them to escort Daisy away, but Evelyn pushed Irene aside with force.
Daisy took off her sunglasses and glared at her. “Are you asking for trouble? Do you think you have some powerful backing now? How dare you provoke me?”
“Oh, it’s nothing really. Conrad’s been very concerned about me lately,” Evelyn replied coolly. “Miss Daisy, I guess you’re here shopping alone because your long nights are filled with loneliness, huh? It must be tough for you.”
Evelyn’s words hit right where it hurt. Daisy’s greatest fear lately was the fact that Conrad had turned her into a laughingstock, and here she was, waiting for him to return to her.
“I guess you really didn’t learn from the last lesson, did you?”
Evelyn sneered, unfazed. “Do you think I care? This time, I won’t be careless.”
She leaned in slightly, arrogantly saying, “Besides, Lillian’s grandmother’s death is connected to you, isn’t it? I’m sure Conrad doesn’t know that yet. Lillian’s been using her grandmother’s death to make Conrad feel sorry for her. She ran away, and Conrad’s been trying his hardest to bring her back.”
Evelyn paused for a moment and then continued, “If they find out it was your doing, do you think Brown Family Group should release an official statement denying the entire engagement? Saying it was all a rumor from the start?”
Daisy trembled with rage, but all she could do was watch as Evelyn walked away, head held high, acting arrogantly.
“That bitch!” Daisy nearly lost it on the spot.
“Miss Daisy, is it?”
Daisy froze and turned to see who had spoken.
“I’m Mr. Kenneth’s assistant. Would you care for a cup of coffee?”
Daisy didn’t expect the one inviting her for coffee to be Kenneth. After all, it was well-known that the relationship between the Brown family father and son wasn’t the best. To show she was on Conrad’s side, Daisy had always kept up basic politeness with the future father-in-law, but she wasn’t truly interested in getting closer.
So when Kenneth invited her, she was confused about his intentions.
“Miss Daisy, I hope it’s not too forward of me to ask. Please, sit.”
Daisy gave a slight smile, trying to hide her discomfort. “Sorry, Mr. Kenneth, I didn’t realize you were here. As the younger one, I should be the one inviting you for a cup of coffee.”
“I’ve heard you’re such a well-behaved child, but it’s a pity Conrad doesn’t appreciate you. He’s wasting the chance to be with such a good girl.”
Hearing this, Daisy’s heart skipped a beat, and the smile on her face faltered. She felt like Kenneth’s words carried some hidden meaning. Was he implying they were planning to break off the engagement with the White family?
“But you know, with such an outstanding daughter from the White family, it’s no surprise that so many families are vying for your hand. Our Brown family also has more than one son.”
Daisy froze. “What?!”
Kenneth narrowed his eyes and said, “Daisy, I know the pressure you’ve been under lately. If you want to save face, it’s simple. Your father and I have known each other for a long time. Marrying someone like Conrad, a wild stallion, isn’t the best choice. You’d be better off choosing someone more suitable.”
Kenneth added, “Working with Conrad means you need to be careful about taming that wild wolf. But with me, not only do you have guarantees, but you can also stay firmly in your position as Mrs. Brown. You’ll have the perfect chance to redeem yourself.”
Daisy hadn’t expected Kenneth to offer this.
Of course, she wasn’t without other options. But Conrad was different. Taming him had become an obsession for her.
“Sorry, Mr. Kenneth, but I still love Conrad.”
Kenneth looked disappointed. “Well, if that’s the case, it makes sense. As a girl, you’re always yearning for love. But to win this guy’s heart, I’m afraid it won’t be that easy.”
“I don’t care. I just want to be the woman by his side. Sooner or later, he’ll realize that I’m the one who can bring him real benefits. He’ll soon understand that the right choice is to invest his time in me.”
“If that’s what you want, we can still work together. Conrad’s already lost his mind over a woman named Lillian. Marrying him will leave you alone in an empty house. But if you control the power in his group, you’ll hold the reins.”
“The premise is that I still need to work with you, right?”
If she could take control of Conrad, she would definitely have the upper hand. But would he still be the Conrad she wanted?
Daisy didn’t want to keep arguing with Kenneth about this.
“Mr. Kenneth, I’m glad you told me all this today, but I’ve never been one to give up easily. I still want to try. I believe Conrad and I are the ones who will end up together in the end. I’ll visit your house when I have time, but I’ll take my leave now.”
“Alright, I’ll also make sure to speak with your father. As for what happened today…”
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
Daisy smiled as she stood up, but Kenneth’s face darkened immediately.
What an ungrateful little thing.
If she weren’t from the White family, with such strong economic ties, he wouldn’t even bother with her. A woman with ambition but no means, and no vision at that.
And yet, she set her sights on Conrad and stubbornly clung to him.
Otherwise, marrying this woman off to Osmond would have given him another powerful ally.
But Daisy-of all people-rejected him!
Let her run into obstacles with Conrad.
However, Conrad had been dragging his feet on marrying Daisy, which made it easier for him to find strong allies and eventually push Conrad off the throne.
It was a shame, though-he would have to sift through more families that could rival the White family to find the right girl, all to pave the way for Osmond.
Evelyn, feeling triumphant after dealing a blow to Daisy, received a call from her parents.
“What now?!”
“Looking for a job? My cousin is in his thirties and still can’t find a decent job! How am I supposed to help him?”
“He wants to join the Brown Family Group? You think the Brown Family Group is something I just hand out jobs at? I won’t do it! Don’t come to me with nonsense. Either stay home and be obedient with the money I give you, or don’t expect any of it!”
Before Evelyn could finish speaking, a cloth was thrown over her head, and she was forcibly lifted up and shoved into a car on the street.
