“How about I let you know if I have any more jobs lined up for you,” I heard him say into the phone, his voice extremely casual as if he was talking to a friend.
Curious, I stepped out of bed and headed to the closet, leaning against the door, watching him multitask between packing and handling a phone call. When he noticed my presence, he looked at me with a nervous, faint smile.
That look made me wonder who was on the other end, and why he was eyeing me as if I was supposed to snatch the phone from his grip.
“She’s here, watching me like a hawk,” he continued, making me feel a bit like an intruder. “Who is that?” I whispered, unable to contain my curiosity any longer.
Alessio ignored my question. “She isn’t really into that kind of stuff, but I’ll let her know,” he spoke back.
“Let me know what?”
Still no answer.
“Just like you, I also have a flight in the early morning, so I’ll let you rest,” he ended the call, greeting with a simple ‘bye’ before hanging up the phone.
Who was he talking to, what was it about, and what was he planning? These questions swirled in my head as he went back to packing without acknowledging me.
“Bro,” I said, knowing how much he hated me calling him that. Then I jumped on his back in a playful attempt to surprise him, and luckily he grabbed me, right before putting me back onto the floor again. “Who was that, hmm?”
“That…escort that helped me,” he said, and I knew why he had ended the call as quickly as he did. We already had a fight about that, and there was no point in doing it all over again.
“But you said something about flying?” I questioned, trying to piece together the puzzle.
“She’s also one of our flight attendants. Small world.”
“Wow, she’s a hard worker,” I remarked, but not to be bitchy. I was genuinely impressed by her passion for work. “Anyway, will she be flying with you tomorrow?”
I tried my hardest not to sound jealous, but was clearly failing.
“No, she isn’t coming tomorrow,” he chuckled.
“Then why did she call you, and what did she ask about me?” I continued my interrogation, very well aware that I was probably the most annoying woman at the moment, but I didn’t care. I had questions, and he was going to answer them.
“She called to ask if I had any other jobs lined up for her, and she wanted to know if she should buy you a bag,” Alessio shared like a good, obedient puppy. “I told her-”
“I’m not into that kind of stuff, I heard,” I said. “Still nice of her to offer.”
“Yes, really nice,” Alessio spoke, full of sarcasm.
“I don’t think it’s you she’s after though,” I spoke in the same sarcastic tone. Pulling him closer, I grabbed Alessio by his collar, and patted his chest with a small smile. “I mean, I hope it’s not-because that would be a bit strange, don’t you think?”
My tone was still sweet, but my eyes said something else. ‘Fuck me over like everyone says you will, and I’ll kill you myself.’
“Mena, please,” Alessio nervously chuckled. “You’re being very passive-aggressive right now.”
“Oh, am I?” I chuckled, releasing his collar. “Well, did you ever fuck her?”
Truly, it was all I wanted to know in the first place, and since he knew where I was getting at, there was no reason to beat around the bush.
Alessio didn’t hesitate to answer. “Yes, before we officially got together,” he said. “It wasn’t anything serious, even my brothers…it isn’t something to worry about.”
Ah, so she also had a go at the other Fanucci brothers.
His bluntness had me startled, and I felt an sharp feeling in my chest. I wasn’t angry at him though because I had asked him a question, and he had answered it truthfully.
“But she didn’t know that, which means she’s dangerous, and you’re still talking to her?” I addressed carefully, not wanting to start a fight. A flight attendant, an escort, and slept with not only Alessio but also his brothers?
This woman was without a doubt drop-dead gorgeous and must have some kind of charm.
“Of course I am, she’s my employee,” Alessio spoke in disbelief. “Are you jealous? Do you want me to delete her and every other woman’s number I have?” his tone was sincere. Alessio leaned in to give me a kiss. “Because I will do that for you,” he murmured against my lips, and I knew he really would.
“No,” I whispered, the word slipping out almost against my will. I wasn’t that kind of woman, and I didn’t want to be.
I knew what I had gotten myself into when I decided to jump into a relationship with a man surrounded by females a good amount of the time. Even if he would cut her off, there would be other women, business partners in his line of work.
They were only doing their job, and his commitment was with me. It was up to him whether to behave himself or not.
These were the facts, yet acknowledging it didn’t make it any easier to bear.
“Who is better, her or me?” I couldn’t give a reason for why I asked that.
“I thought about you the whole time I was with her,” Alessio gave me one of his honest answers again. Good, because I don’t know what I would’ve done if he had said otherwise.
“I have no issue with her helping you,” I cleared up any misunderstandings. “But I had to interrogate you because everyone thinks you will cheat on me.”
That was my biggest nightmare. Him making me look like a fool while I kept telling everyone he wasn’t going to.
“And what do you think?” Alessio’s gaze searched mine. He didn’t look angry or offended, no. Instead, he appeared to be understanding and concerned about my worries.
“I think they don’t understand the way we feel about each other,” I said, not having to think for a second about how to reply. We had a true connection, and no one could tell me otherwise. Personally, I trusted it was too strong for either of us to hurt each other in that way. Regardless of others’ opinions.
“What do you think?” I asked, turning the question back to him.
